Participating in the

Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative Week

The Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (NBI) is a collaborative effort of Nantucket’s leading conservation organizations and off-island partners to inventory and monitor the many species of plants and animals found on Nantucket and to educate the public about the importance of protecting the rare elements that contribute to Nantucket’s rich local biodiversity.

In 2008 the NBI is seeking scientists and naturalists to visit Nantucket to conduct biodiversity surveys in their area of expertise during the 3rd Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (NBI) Week from 25 to 31 May.

If you or any of your colleagues are interested in spending a day to a full week on Nantucket to help with the NBI Week, we encourage you to join us. Deadline for Registration is 01 May 2008. You can register by downloading our pdf form and emailing, sending, or faxing the completed form to:

Cheryl Beaton, NBI Chair
nantucket.native@comcast.net
phone: 508-228-9198
fax: 508-228-1031
Maria Mitchell Association
4 Vestal Street
Nantucket, MA 02554

In addition, please review our invitation letter, research agreement, and don't forget to apply for a grant to do research on Nantucket.

Housing on Nantucket and funding to support parking and ferry travel are available for qualified registrants needing financial support, but housing and funding are limited so please complete the Financial Need section of the Registration Form and submit it as soon as possible. Housing for researchers not receiving support will be available for a modest fee.

The NBI Week will start-off with a Sunday evening Keynote Address at the Nantucket Atheneum. During the week there will be free public programs, field trips and workshops for participants and the people of Nantucket, as well as ample time and support for you to work on the taxonomic group of your expertise.

This will be an exciting opportunity to visit Nantucket to conduct short-term inventories or to initiate long-term biodiversity research, to work with island naturalists and conservation groups and to provide an educational experience for the public. We hope you will join us.

Our Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative website will be updated as the plans for the week develop and will provide all the important details regarding the NBI Week.

Please feel free to contact Cheryl Beaton, NBI Chair if you have any questions. Hope you will join us.

Sincerely yours,
Cheryl Beaton, NBI Week Chair
