I created Snipe and Carhartt, although Carhartt was inspired by watching
a little too much Behind The Music.
"Sheriff Bannerman?"
Walt Bannerman turned around. There was a man in
a stiffly starched suit standing behind him. Everything about the man's
posture and dress screamed "Lawyer!". Walt sighed. The day was
not improving.
"Is there something that I can help you with?" Walt
asked.
"I am Michael Snipe, of Snipe & Hunter Associates.
My employers have reason to believe that Devon Carhartt is living in Cleaves
Mills. We need your help to ascertain whether or not this is true."
Walt snorted. "Carhartt is dead. How can he
be living in Cleaves Mills?"
"He was kidnapped, and presumed dead when his captors
never released him. We now have reason to believe that he was not murdered
and instead was released and is alive today." The lawyer dug into the
breast pocket of his suit coat and produced a computer-generated photo.
"This is what we believe Carhartt looks like today. If there is anyone
in Cleaves Mills that resembles this photo, we would like to be informed
so that we can interview them."
Walt took the picture. "We'll give you a call if
we find anything, but I doubt it. You'll also have to understand that
this isn't going to be a priority for us. We have a lot of more recent
crimes to deal with."
"Just check this out, please. We believe that Carhartt
is alive, and you may be able to help us finally discover who kidnapped him
back in 1973. If you find him." Snipe turned and walked out of
the building.
"Devon Carhartt. He thinks Devon Carhartt is living
here," Walt muttered incredulously and chucked the picture onto his
desk. A brief thought of taking the picture to Johnny Smith scuttled
through his head, but he stomped it flat and returned to his work.

"Megan said that she saw a lawyer leaving the station
this morning. One she didn't recognize." Sarah said as she put
out the dinner plates. "She said he had a rental car from that place
down near the airport."
Walt looked up at his wife. "Has anyone ever told
Megan that she's a horrible busybody?"
"She means well," Sarah said. "I told her
that you probably arrested someone who wasn't local and they brought in their
own lawyer."
Walt concentrated his attention on his dinner. "Good.
Let her believe that."
"So that wasn't what was going on?"
Walt looked up at Sarah. "No. Some lawyer
name Michael Snipe showed up today claiming that Devon Carhartt is alive
and living in Cleaves Mills. He gave me a computer printout of what
Carhartt should look like now, and expects us to track down everyone in town
who looks like the picture."
"Devon Carhartt? As in the Devon Carhartt?
That teen idol kidnapped and murdered in 1973?" Sarah asked.
"The one who used to sing on his TV show all the time?"
"That would be the one."
"Why do they think that he's alive? I thought he
had been murdered shortly after being kidnapped."
"Beats me. This Snipe guy just showed up at the
station this morning saying that his employers had reason to believe that
Carhartt was alive."
Sarah thought for a moment. "Why don't you let Johnny
look at the picture? He may be able to tell you something. Might
just be why this lawyer thinks Carhartt is alive, but it would be something."
Walt rolled his eyes. "I am not running to Johnny
with everything that lands on my desk. And I'm certainly not going
to waste my time on this load of bull, much less his. I'll call him
when I need his help."
"Why don't you let Johnny decide if looking at this picture
is a waste of his time?" Sarah asked. "Just give him a phone
call and ask."
"Can I at least eat dinner first?" Walt said, and
viciously stuck his fork into an unprotesting piece of chicken.
So... what did you think? Feel free to let me know,
since this is my first adventure into the land of TDZ fanfic and while I
know where I'm going in other fandoms, this one is relatively new to me.
