Asbury Park II

Yeah, yeah, he went home,
Back to the East,
He left the West Coast behind
And no one seems to care.
He's gone to Asbury Park
I think is where he went.
Into the bleak ghost-town by the sea
That echoes the birth of rock and roll.
But only his footfalls sound
On its vacant boards.
Where empty buildings stare
With empty, boarded up eyes.
And the wind howls mournfully
Singing a duet with the waves.
Mourning the loss of the voices
That sang in the halls by the sea.
The voices that he came to remember.
The voices that sang in his head.
And lead him to his idols' feet.
The wind catches his hair
And whips it against his face
Mingling silk and tears.
He was a Tinseltown ghost,
Rattling about on the hill,
And now he's found his very own
Still, abandoned ghost town on the waves.
Near the place where he was born.
Left behind the glitter town
That held him on top of the world
And now he's the king of nothing
With only the cry of seabirds
To answer his lonely song.
"Home, home, where is that?"
For in truth he can't go back
To a home that stifled him.
And his childhood place is barred
By too many memories.
There is no resting there.
Memory nips at his heels
As the folk of Asbury Park.
No more running, no more hiding
Facing their desolations, lost;
Seeking a way to find love
And a song of light and fire
Echoes in his throat now.
Sitting on the dunes, dreaming;
Some strange dharma bum way.
Thinking of a love to lead him home.
Away from gray sand and waves
To the gold and turquoise West,
A love who left another's arms.
Somewhere on the cold gray waves
She is coming to take him home.
A home together they dream of, quiet,
And the peace of dreams fulfilled.
Dream on, quiet prophet,
In Asbury Park.
Dream on amid your desolation,
And sing your psalms of loss.
And of an empty gilded world
That you have climbed above.
Sail on into Dreamtime;
The singer's Valhalla,
Echoes with your voice.
We have the memory of what you were,
And we too dream of what will be,
In your heart, in your life,
In Vegas, Atlantic City and more;
But most of all,
In Asbury Park.
