We Heroes Die Upon Our Knees for "Nothing"

The stars bow their way before the fading night.
Making way for the mourning wind.
The life that came has since been lost.
Sucked away into the infinite nothing.

And you said to me that it would last forever,
and you said to me that legends never die.
But what you didn't tell me, because you didn't know
was that the same isn't true for those whom are mere heroes.

The heroes still die just like all the other mortals.
While you continue walking in your infinite Hall of Immortals.
And here we sit, and we look up in awe,
wishing, dreaming, that we could just be for one moment, a part of something significant,
a part of something real, a part of something that matters- like you.

Like your life, like your hopes, like your dreams, like your love.
But no, we who fall to our knees upon the grounds of the Earth
with flowers in our hands- for you.
Can do no such things,
and simply break like twigs upon the wind,
like our dreams.

Who was I to think this was... something more. Something transgressing of mortal foibles. "Tread softly because you tread upon my dreams" - W.B. Yeats in He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven
