THE DANCE

Their bodies rise
standing to the spirit of the occasion,
warm smiles gracing their faces
and gentle mirth simmering
beneath the surface.

Hands reach out,
tentative, fawn–like,
nervous.
Hips find them:
uninvited but wanted
and welcome
strangers.
Their moods sway
   not away, but together.
Hot fudge
poured over hearts.
Shallow breaths
not in lust
but in elation.
It is a slow dance
between two close friends,
blossoming into love
in the gymnasium.

Originally it was supposed to be about a child dancing (not with anybody else) for fun, but then it turned into this (two teenagers dancing).
The "Hips find them" is the other person's hips receiving the hands -- but it's "find them" because the hips wanted them.
The hands are strangers to the hips until now since they've never met before.
I liked "Hot fudge poured over hearts." to express the warm feeling.
The moods swaying are of the people.
The feelings I was trying to capture in the end were the ones from dancing with Katie on Valentine's Day around 1999.
