ONE DAY

One day,
when all the leaves,
lilies, delphiniums and roses are gone,
and we're no longer friends,
when all the saplings
have all grown
and gone are the days of old,
when your life has gone and passed you by
and you have nothing left,
You'll come to me to talk to me as an old man
like you did in the old times,
and it'll be too late, it'll be too late,
but I'll still invite you in.

It's sad. It's about Katie not talking to me for many years, after which I've had to "forget" her and let go of our friendship, and then she comes back when I'm 60, wanting to be friends when she's old and alone and misses me and has missed me and has thought of me. There's a 2nd version:

One day,
when all the leaves,
lilies, delphiniums and roses are gone,
and we're no longer friends,
when all the saplings
have all grown
and gone are the days of old,
when your life has already passed you by
and you have nothing left,
You'll come to me to talk to me
like you did in the old times,
and it'll be too late, it'll be too late,
but I'll still invite you in.

The differences are the "old man" is removed for meter to keep the rhyme (but the first version has to be read first so the imagery is retained), and the "already" is used instead of the gone. (The already/gone choice was one I wasn't sure about, I preferred gone but kept the already for the 2nd version, partly to preserve it as well. "Gone" was the original).
