GRAINS OF SAND

I reach my hand out with fingers outsretched,
to caress her face,-
and feel only the wind blowing through my fingers, again.

Her face is only a mirage,-
sand grains on the wind
blowing back to the deserts from which they came.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I fall to my knees,
feeling the solitude of the desert grains beneath my feet.

Although I want to recover the past,
I can't put those sand grains back together again.-
She's gone, and my heart

is caught in my throat.

I did change a few of the line breaks during writing, and changed the third line slightly several times, finally leaving the word "again" in it.
Originally the word "instead" was in that line. Original version is below, I like both.

GRAINS OF SAND (old version)

I reach my hand out
with fingers outsretched,
to caress her face,-

and the wind blows through my fingers instead.

Her face is only a mirage,
sand grains on the wind
blowing back to the deserts from which they came.

I fall to my knees -- somewhere in the back of my mind,
feeling the solitude of the desert grains beneath my knees,

Although I want to recover the past,
I can't put those sand grains back together again.
She's gone, and my heart
is caught in my throat.
