HARLEQUIN
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

"Ready To Love Again" comes from Harlequin's third studio album One False Move (1982), an album that included the songs "Superstitious Feeling" and "I Did It For Love" as singles. While not released as a single, "Ready To Love Again" was included on the CD issue of the band's Greatest Hits (1988) album as a bonus track. The best-of album was originally released in 1986 as Radio Romances on LP and cassette, then later re-issued on CD in 1988 under a new title and with four bonus tracks.

Tabbed here is the song's Intro. There are actually two guitar parts on the Intro, one playing the riff and one playing lead parts, but since there's very little overlap, I've combined it into one part.

GIRLSCHOOL
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

I had this seasonally appropriate riff ready to go last year about this time, but didn't get around to posting it. So I'm posting it now. This is a bass riff from the track "When Your Blood Runs Cold" off of Girlschool's Screaming Blue Murder (1982) album. With the departure of bassist Enid Williams after the band's second album, SBM featured new bassist Gil Weston. The bass riff tabbed here is from the Instrumental break in the middle of the song and is also heard in the Verses.

Happy Hallowe'en!

DOUG AND THE SLUGS
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

In 1980 Vancouver band Doug and The Slugs released their debut album Cognac and Bologna. The album's first single was the Top 20 hit "Too Bad". (The Intro of that song was the Riff-In-A-Jiff entry for May 21, 2012.) The follow-up single was "Chinatown Calculation", the Intro of which is tabbed here.

SPOONS
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

I originally wanted to do a full tab of the Spoons' "Arias & Symphonies", but I'm in the middle of doing a tab and I'm already committed to the next one, so rather than have the part I've done so far sit around gathering dust, I figure I'll post it to the riff section. Maybe I'll get a tab of the whole song done sometime. It's my favourite Spoons song.

"Arias" was, of course, a big hit for the band in 1982, the highest charting single of their career (#18). It was the title track of their second album, also released in 1982. Tabbed here is the Intro.

LOVERBOY
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

"When It's Over" was a Top 20 hit from Loverboy's 1982 album Get Lucky. It has also appeared on all of the band's greatest hits compilations. Tabbed here is the guitar solo.

FM
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

In the late 1970's, Canada was well represented in the progressive rock field by bands such as Rush, Saga, Klaatu, and FM. Sci-fi themes dominated FM's 1977 debut album Black Noise, as heard on tracks such as the space exploration epic "Aldebaran". Tabbed here is the Intro, which with its delay-laden electric mandolin is in some ways similar to the Intro of the album's opening track (and single) "Phasors On Stun".

HONEYMOON SUITE
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

Honeymoon Suite's third album, Racing After Midnight (1988), featured a harder-edged, more guitar centered sound than the band's previous albums, as heard on tracks such as "Love Fever". Tabbed here is the Intro.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

The TPOH song "Killed By Love" was originally released as a non-LP single and video in 1987, the follow-up to the Toronto band's first indie single "I'm An Adult Now". Both songs were re-recorded for the band's platinum selling (in Canada) 1988 debut album Love Junk. Due to the re-record, there are two slightly different versions of the Intro to "Killed By Love". Both are tabbed here.

APRIL WINE
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

The tab I'm working on is still a ways away, so I thought maybe I should take a night to prepare a riff entry so I can get something posted for this month. Drawn from April Wine's 1973 album Electric Jewels, the single "Weeping Widow" cracked the Top 40 in Canada and became a mainstay of the band's live show. Tabbed here is the Intro and the 1st Verse.

KIM MITCHELL
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

The single "Go For Soda" comes from Kim Mitchell's 1984 platinum-selling album Akimbo Alogo. The album was Mitchell's first full-length solo release, following a 1982 self-titled EP. Tabbed here is the song's Intro/1st Chorus.
