UNDER A STORMY SKY by Daniel Lanois
Topic: New Chords Postings

Already well-known as a producer of major music artists such as Peter Gabriel, U2, Robbie Robertson and several other Canadian bands/artists, in 1989 Daniel Lanois launched his own career as a recording artist with his debut album Acadie.

Atmospheric singles "Still Water" and "The Maker" became well-known Lanois classics, as did "Jolie Louise."

The briefest track on the album, "Under A Stormy Sky", recalls a time from Lanois' childhood when his grandfather's farm was sold and Lanois relocated with his mother and siblings from Quebec to Hamilton, Ontario. While he refers to the song as a celebration, it also has a bittersweet tone, reflecting the changes happening in his life, contrasting the happy and the sad, rural and urban, and the French and English languages. Lanois talks about the song in this short video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9_UdYbzLxk

The chord chart includes tablature for the guitar solo and the fills in the second bridge.

HEART - "SAND"
Topic: New Tab Postings

The song "Sand" first appeared on the 1997 album Whirlygig by the Lovemongers, a side project of Heart's Ann & Nancy Wilson. Heart later recorded the song for their 2010 album Red Velvet Car. The Heart version is tabbed here.

The song is in the key of A Major and the tab includes three different ways it can be played. The main tab is based on the way Nancy Wilson's guitar is tuned for the song. The tuning is Open A at the 5th fret. (Tune to Open E and capo at the 5th fret.)

When Heart plays the song live, Ann also plays guitar. Her guitar is in Standard tuning and capoed at the 2nd fret. Below the main tab are chord diagrams and a chord chart based on her guitar part.

For anyone who doesn't want to re-tune or use a capo, stay in Standard tuning and play the chords shown above the tab staff, whatever fingering you like. All three ways of playing the song are in the same pitch as the studio recording.

DOUG AND THE SLUGS
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

In 1980 Vancouver band Doug and The Slugs released their debut album Cognac and Bologna. The album's first single was the Top 20 hit "Too Bad". (The Intro of that song was the Riff-In-A-Jiff entry for May 21, 2012.) The follow-up single was "Chinatown Calculation", the Intro of which is tabbed here.

THE TREWS - "COMING HOME"
Topic: New Tab Postings

A Trew Holiday Gift is a four song digital EP that was released in 2011. It was included as a free bonus for anyone buying The Trews' Hope and Ruin album from the band's online store. The EP featured the Christmas song "Coming Home". Lead singer/rhythm guitarist Colin MacDonald spoke about the song in a December 2011 interview with The Casket, a weekly newspaper published in Antigonish, Nova Scotia (The Trews' hometown):

"It is a song for people working away, whether it is people who work up in Fort McMurray for months at a time and only get to come home on holidays and stuff. Or even guys like us who are touring 250 days out of the year. (The song is about) coming back to what's important at Christmas time."  (http://www.thecasket.ca/archives/14795)

Having enjoyed two great live shows by The Trews this past summer, I decided to tab their Christmas song this holiday season. With this posting, the Canadian Tabs page of the site has also hit the century mark, with "Coming Home" being the 100th tablature added to that page.

SPOONS
Topic: Riff-In-A-Jiff

I originally wanted to do a full tab of the Spoons' "Arias & Symphonies", but I'm in the middle of doing a tab and I'm already committed to the next one, so rather than have the part I've done so far sit around gathering dust, I figure I'll post it to the riff section. Maybe I'll get a tab of the whole song done sometime. It's my favourite Spoons song.

"Arias" was, of course, a big hit for the band in 1982, the highest charting single of their career (#18). It was the title track of their second album, also released in 1982. Tabbed here is the Intro.

(In the live video linked to above the band is playing the song 1 tone lower than the original recording.)
