Alaska Expedition 2006: Search for the Salmon People

After receiving the Matthew Baxter III Memorial Award we (Zephyr and Julie) prepared for our expedition and headed to Alaska for five weeks of paddling the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska from Wrangell to Juneau.

Although we altered our course, we were able to paddle over 300 miles through places such as Fredrick Sound where we saw hundreds of Humpback whales, Dall’s porpoises and even Orca whales. We made the longest crossing either of us had ever done- over 9 miles. We spent several days in the green, ice chocked waters of Tracy Fjord experiencing the incredible strength and beauty of active glaciers. To finish our trip we paddled to Oliver Inlet on Admiralty Island where we did an overland portage and spent 3 days observing Brown bears. We then paddled to Auke Bay and loaded our boats onto the MV Malaspina of the Alaska Ferry System for our return to Bellingham, Washington.

We learned a great deal about ourselves, each other, and the wilds of SE Alaska. We encountered amazing people and animals along the way. We learned to fish, travel, eat and sleep with the rhythm of the tide- for it dictated the pace of our lives as we found our natural places in the circle of life.

We encourage you to explore this website to catch a glimpse of our life changing journey. We send thanks to all who supported and loved us on our voyage and we now wish to share our adventure with you. We bow humbly before you and send you blessings with the tide.

Namaste- I bow to the light that is within you that is also within me.
