Lake Dreams

Quietly she pushes open the screen door and lets it fall silently shut behind her as she wanders out into the near darkness. It is a warm night and soon pinpoints of light will be scattered in the heavens along with the moon at its fullest giving illumination and reflecting itself on the mirrored surface of the lake, making the late night seem more like twilight. All is peaceful and she listens to the light breeze rattling through the tops of the trees and hears a whippoorwill somewhere in the distance. She walks to the lake’s edge, stoops down and dips her fingers in the tepid water. What a night it would be for swimming.

Instead, she strolls along the sand until she gets to the little dock where she walks out to the end and sits dangling her legs over the side.

Peace settles like dust over all the surfaces of the dark hours. She stares out over the lake without seeing.

The summer darkness feels warm and comfortable on her skin, like an old friend come to call. The warm breeze cools her hot skin and she shivers with the deliciousness of it. Far across the lake she perceives the faint calling of a loon.

She frowns to herself as the loon calls again. Such a lonely sound, the same as a passing train whistling on its way to somewhere else or perhaps a wolf calling to its mate. She can hear the crickets, and the water lapping the underpinnings of the dock.. Across the lake somewhere someone turns off their outside lights.

A dog barks a couple of times and then is silent. Once in a while a fish jumps and splashes near where she is sitting.

Knowing she is alone she begins the sweet phrases of “Amazing Grace". The sound of her singing goes out over the water and echoes back to her from the other side of the lake. The only voice she hears is her own.

Slowly she stands, stooping to retrieve her shoes and drifts back to the cabin, slipping silently inside and down the short hall to the little room at the back . The screens let in the night sounds and the slight breeze. She lies on the top of the double bed, not bothering to pull down the spread and lets herself drift.

In the dark somebody comes to her and holds out his hand. She has always known he would come. She has waited for him all her life. He smiles and looks at her as if she is the only woman in the world and wraps his arms around her. His eyes light up whenever he looks at her. She feels his hand run up her back or rest at her waist in that little way some men have of telling you in his private way that you are his.

She leans back and rests against his chest, her head under his chin as they view the lake and listen to the night music together.

They have talked for hours about anything and everything and never even noticed the time passing by. Even as she turns to him and feels her cheek against his chest she realizes that she is only in a dream from which she has no desire to awaken. Yet with this very realization comes reality and he is lost to her once more. She sighs…..

Her body sleeps on but her spirit is solitary and wanders the earth at dawn searching and she moans softly in restlessness.
