This is a choose your own adventure story. Start reading at number 1 and follow the directions in bold. Good luck!

1
Heart pounding in her chest, Larra sprinted up the hill, thinking briefly that the grass looked silver bathed in the moonlight. However, a howl kicked her thoughts back to the pack of wolves chasing her. She had no idea where she was, only that she was in grave danger, and a stone castle loomed ahead of her. If Larra should enter the castle, go to 5. If she should avoid it and continue on, go to 3.
2
Larra decides to leave as inconspicuously as possible. She opens the door quietly, except for the squeaks, and steps onto the rickety-looking drawbridge she had ran across the night before. She let go of the door and it slammed shut, but she wasn’t out of danger yet. With a huge crack, the drawbridge collapsed and Larra screamed, grabbing onto the doorknockers and letting her feet dangle in the water. The bridge was gone, but she couldn’t open the heavy door while hanging like she was. There was no way out but to drop into the icy water and allow the reptilian monster-like creatures to have their prey. It just goes to show that in the end, you can’t cheat death.

3
It was no use. After running frantically past the castle, she dove into the woods, tearing her clothes on the burs and thorns. At long last, she sank to the ground faintly and allowed the wolves to surround her, waiting for the time when they would have their meal, and Larra would meet a gruesome end.

4
Larra was just about to open the door when she heard a sudden bang. In her excited state, she jumped and rushed back to the foyer, and shut the dozens of doors behind her. Only after securing the doors with a chair, a wardrobe, and two footrests did she remove her cell phone from her pocket and call the police. The Forestville Law Enforcement Squad removed her from the premises, but found themselves unable to open the password door. A note on the password machine read-
Oh rats, the password’s been changed. Too bad for you!
Since you chose the chicken ending, you will be punished by not finding out who -or what- was behind the doors. Too bad for you!

5
The drawbridge creaked eerily as Larra ran across it, but she didn’t care. Her high from the adrenaline was failing, and fatigue was setting in. She grabbed the huge carved doorknocker and pulled it open, diving inside and slamming it, just in time to hear the thumps of wolves slamming their momentum into the doors. If Larra collapses with exhaustion, go to 8. If she tries to continue on, go to 10.

6
“Larra? The man asks. Suddenly, Larra realizes why he looks so familiar. He looks like herself. “Dad?” It comes out as a whisper. They hug, and Larra’s father reveals to her that he had been working on a top-secret government project to rid the world of rats. He had been forced to leave her mother to fulfil his duties, but had vowed to return when he had finished. Father and daughter visited and laughed, and promised to visit each other often, and Larra rode back home in a black Honda instead of in a wolf’s stomach.

7
Larra’s curiosity gets the best of her, and attempts to break the password code. “Stone.” “Doughnut.” “Knife.” she said the last one with a shiver, thinking how much this castle resembled one in her favorite horror movie. “Spinach.” “Spiders.” “Queen Victoria.” “Pistachio?” But she had no idea what the word could be. “Oh rats,” she says, snapping her fingers with distaste for her own ignorance. But the password machine beeped happily and admitted her to the room, repeating what she had said. “Rats. Thank you.” It drones in a robotic voice. Larra smiles as she remembers her mother’s pet rat, Daisy, and suddenly wonders, not for the first time, who her father was. Larra also stops to consider why an old deserted castle would have a high-tech lock like this one as she grabs the door handle and begins to turn it. If Larra enters the room, go to 12. If she runs back to the drawbridge, go to 2.

8
Larra drops onto the cold stone floor in the dark room, only to be awakened later by a draft. A window, high in the wall, was opened, and a gentle, cool breeze floated upon her face. Since her strength was now refreshed, she hopped off the floor and began walking blindly around the room, until she ran into what felt like a large block of wood. On top of it was a heavy ornate bar and a tiny paper box. A matchbox and a candlestick! What luck! She struck a match and lit the candle, then turned slowly to take in her surroundings. She was standing in a high-ceilinged foyer with a stone floor, the large wooden doors she had come through, and some assorted mismatched furniture. Larra wished she had slept on the mahogany sofa instead of the stone floor, but it had been too dark to see. On the other side of the room was a set of oak doors, similar to the ones she had originally come through, but smaller. If Larra enters through the small oak doors, go to 11. If she leaves the same way she came, go to 2.

9
If you’re looking to continue Larra’s story, you’ve come to the wrong place. Re-check your number and try again. But I do have good news. I just saved a bunch of money on car insurance by switching to Geico!

10
Larra, in her exhaustion, stumbles on, determined not to fall. She still had no idea where she was. She walked the perimeter of the room, searching for a door with her hands because it was so dark. Finally, she found a knob, pulled it, and gasped in surprise and fear. Being as tired as she was, she had accidentally walked in a circle and opened the same door she had come in through, and the wolves had been waiting patiently. She dropped to the floor, her flesh becoming a meal for the beasts.

11
Larra carefully opened the oak doors, only to find another door. She opened that one, and found another door behind it. She continued to open consecutive doors until she found one that was locked, requiring a password to open it. If Larra turns back toward the drawbridge, go to 2. If she tries to fool the password lock, go to 7.

12
The door creaks open, blasting Larra with cold air and making her shiver once more. The light blinds her, and she feels, with a shock, hands grab her shoulders. When her eyes clear, she realizes that the man is rather familiar-looking. If you want Larra’s story to end happily, go to 6. If you want Larra’s story to end sadly, go to 13. If you want Larra’s story to end chickenly, go to 4.
13
Larra screamed when she remembered this man’s picture on the FBI’s Most Wanted List, but nobody was there to hear her. With a roar of either rage or victory, Larra couldn’t tell, the pulled a hatchet from his belt. He stopped roaring and smiled, tilted Larra’s head back, and sliced cleanly across her throat. Larra’s last thought was Boy, I should have stayed with the wolves.
