___________History_____________

Beginnings

The Wauseon Congregational Church, organized on June 11, 1864 included a dedicated group of pioneers from a New England heritage. Most of the charter members moved from Northeastern Ohio to Lena, a small community west of Wauseon.

The original church building ( shown here) was located on the East side of Fulton Street, just to the south of the current Edgar/Greiser Funeral Home.  The building and lot cost the new congregation $2, 174.55. The devout congregation met in this building until 1905 when a new building, the current church home, was constructed.

The Charter Window

On the southern wall of the sanctuary, a classic Italianate stained glass blooming lily is surrounded by a scroll that commemorates the twelve founders of the Wauseon Congregational Church. From the top, their names are: Andrew J.  Knapp, Lovina M. Knapp, Jerome H. Shaw,  Catherine P. Shaw, Joel Lyon, Hetty Lyon, Horatio Lyon, Irene P. Lyon, Betsy Lyon Brigham, Elizabeth R. Greenough, Judith Hunt Dudley, and John Bates.

Our Current Home

Located at the corner of Clinton and Elm streets, our current church home, a Romanesque church building was constructed in 1904. The sanctuary, with a classic semi-circular sweep of oak pews is surrounded by eighteen stained glass windows.
