If you use a laptop or PDA when travelling, ebooks can be ideal for studying a new or neglected course, a hobby or even some light reading.
Most of us who read, generally prefer to read from a page in a book rather than from a page in a displayed ebook. This is understandable and is in keeping with our expectations and traditions. Now consider typing a letter using a typewriter and that same letter using a word processor. Which do you prefer? The point here is that we adapt. Think of the large number of people who regularly surf the net. How many of them read news articles, sport, hobbies, interests, etc? Now, how many of those same people read daily newspapers? As we evolve, our reading habits change.
I'm not dismissing conventional hardback and paperback books completely. However, as ebooks and the supporting technology become more commonplace, their share of the total 'book market' will gradually outstrip that of conventional books until the 'paperless' book reigns supreme.
A 'paperless' book should not be confused with the well known work of fiction 'the paperless office'.
Although, with email being the preferred means of communication in many offices, there has been a gradual decline in the use of paper for some administrative tasks.
The majority of ebooks can be printed. In printed form, they can offer several advantages over printed books.
Words can be printed in different size fonts or colors to enhance reading experience. This can be invaluable for those with particular visual disorders. You can select what pages you want to print. This is ideal for reference books or course lessons. You can re-print spoiled or torn pages. You can replace lost or stolen pages. In fact, as long as your ebook is electronically stored, and is not corrupted with a virus or for some other reason, you can happily print whenever you wish.
Other than a printable ebook, your only requirement is a printer, or the authorized use of one, and a little knowledge.
