Reduced to slavery and forced into gladiatorial combat he discovers he might be able to get close enough to his enemy to exact revenge. Russell Crowe stars. Proof for those who doubted it that they can indeed make them like they used to. Ridley Scott’s Gladiator is a big film in every respect. Filling the screen with it’s spectacular visuals its heroic (and indeed villainous) characters and its pounding score. Epic is a word that has been so often misused since Hollywood’s penchant for big brash (often biblical) cinema floundered and died in the early sixties. However it is a word which fits Gladiator like a glove. The epic has returned and it appears it was sorely missed. In a performance that easily hoisted him into the Hollywood A-List Russell Crowe is excellent as the titular Roman. Maximus is a decent chap – a general adored by his troops and feared by his enemies. He is in fact the polar opposite of Commodus (Joaquin Pheonix) the son of ageing Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). Commodus is as weak and amoral as Maximus is tough and decent. Knowing he’ll be dead soon Aurelius favours Maximus as his successor which does not please his son at all leading to the old man’s (slightly) premature demise. As Commodus crowns himself Emperor Maximus finds that both he and his family are in serious danger. The resulting plot is not particularly surprising. The good guys are good the bad guys are most certainly not. Performances here of course are crucial and with Crowe’s charisma and Pheonix’s smarm they make surprisingly well matched opponents. The action scenes – of which there are plenty – are brilliantly handled especially once the story moves into the (convincingly awesome) Coliseum itself. The film looks and sounds fantastic thanks to some excellent special effects and a striking soundtrack from Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerard. Armed with all the right ingredients Gladiator works a treat. At one point Maximus standing knee deep in defeated foes yells to the baying crowd “Are you not entertained?”. Damn right we are. ...
