Angelas Ashes - (VHS) Adaption of the bestselling memoir by Frank McCourt. A family struggle against poverty in Depression-era Ireland. Robert Carlyle stars with Emily Watson as McCourt's parents. Directed by Alan Parker. Frank McCourt's autobiography proved to be one of those books which was so popular that it would have been rude not to have filmed it. As such thanks to Alan Parker the memoir hits the screen with all the style and panache you would expect from the director of Evita and Bugsy Malone. Of course style and panache may not be the first thing you might think of when considering the book - which had it not been for the anecdotal humour running through even the most grim passages been unbearably depressing. The production design is slick (the dirt beautifully filmed) but mercifully Parker doesn't allow sentimentality to creep into the fray. Given that McCourt's voice (one of the highlights of the book) is largely lost for the film the screenplay manages to convey most of the books wit. This can also be accounted to the cast. Robert Carlyle is fine as the alcoholic dad but Emily Watson is simply outstanding as the mother. Credit too should go to Joe Breen Ciaren Owens and Michael Legge who play Frank at different ages. ... How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days - (DVD) As andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) agrees to write a first hand sccount about what it takes to drive a man out of your life in 10 days. Still in the face of great losses they charge forward into the battle of their lifetimes tied together by their singular goal to keep Sauron distracted and give the Ring Bearer a chance to complete his quest. Their hopes rest with Frodo (Elijah Wood) a determined hobbit making a perilous trip across treacherous enemy lands to cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom. The closer Frodo gets to his final destination the heavier his burden becomes and the more he must rely on his old friend Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin).
