Some descendants of John Kennedy of Halifax County VA and Randolph County NC Foreword My interest in the Kennedy family of Davidson County NC comes from my mother's Johnson/Burton/Edwards section of the family. First, my great-aunt Fatima (Timey) Johnson Welborn told her niece Crissy Johnson Petrea that (our mutual ancestor) Jesse Burton's wife Sarah (Sally) was a Kennedy. Timey and Sally's lives overlapped by more than 20 years, so that Timey could well have gotten the straight story, first-hand. I have not found any contradiction with public records. Quick example: Sally Kennedy Burton was shown as born in Randolph County, in her listing in the 1850 Guilford County Census. In 1789, the consensus birth year of Sally that I derived from the 1850-1870 Guilford County censuses, the Kennedys were still in Randolph County. Jesse and Sally Kennedy Burton had three daughters: Polly, who married Spencer Pope, and died after having a daughter Polly Farmer Pope; my ancestor Criscilla, who married Henry L. Johnson, and Elizabeth, who married John Kennedy. Jesse Burton divided his land between the two living daughters in 1845: Crissie & Henry Johnson and Betsy and John Kennedy. After Jesse’s death in 1850, Sally lived with John & Betsy Kennedy until she died, sometime after 1870. So here was another Kennedy connection: how did Betsy’s husband John Kennedy fit into this family? My mother's mother, Mary Jane Edwards Johnson, had two sisters who married Kennedy men: Amanda Edwards married Jacob Kennedy and Charity Edwards married Robert (Bob) Kennedy. Both lived near where Thomasville's High Schools are located today. If there was ever any discussion of their kinship, I hadn't come across it. I had presumed that they were somehow related, given where they lived and whom they married. These are the questions I was pursuing as I accumulated data on this Kennedy family. The answers? a) I am satisfied with the family story that Sarah was “a Kennedy,” specifically, the daughter of John Kennedy II of John Kennedy I of Randolph County. I have found clues, rather than direct evidence. Example: Spencer Pope and Polly Burton named their daughter Polly Farmer Pope. Farmer is a name that the Kennedy family was close to, both in Randolph County NC and Halifax County VA, the places that they lived before settling near present-day Thomasville in Davidson County NC. b) While there were 3 contemporary John Kennedys, including the one who married Betsy Burton, I am reasonably certain that Betsy's John is son of Epaphroditis (Eppy) Kennedy, who was most likely a brother of Sarah Kennedy Burton. c) I am reasonably certain that Jacob Kennedy and Robert Kennedy were second-cousins, and both from the John II, rather than the Sherwood side of the Kennedy family. Jacob was the grandson of John II's son Jacob Kennedy, whilst Robert was grandson of John II's son Henry Kennedy. The Kennedy family is a large one, many members having remained in the greater High Point/Thomasville area, since the family located there from southwest Randolph County before 1800. The following data is not complete, principally because my research was pointed toward the specific objectives I described. I have included some additional information uncovered through associations with Charles L. "Chuck" Kennedy, 112 Freeman Hollow Court, Goodlettsville, TN 37072; Peggy Spafford, 810 Shady Lane, Belleville KS 66935; Mary Smithey, PO 607, North Wilkesboro NC 28659; Nancy M. Smith, 512 North Pineview Ave., Goldsboro NC 27530; David Eddinger, 1315 NE 129th St, Miami FL 33161; Janette Barbee, PO 496, Albemarle NC 28002-0496 and Clay and Josie Baker Kennedy (both now deceased) and their daughter Gerry Castillejos, Unity Street, Thomasville NC 27360. Nancy Smith furnished me with abstracted marriages of Kennedy males from the Davidson County Marriage Register from 1823 to 1938, and with copies of the microfiche of the NC Marriage Bonds for both males and females for Kennedy, Canada, and the spelling variants of each that we could think of. Unless otherwise indicated, these sources were used for marriage dates. Observation: there are a number of marriage bonds for Person County, just south of Halifax County VA, that appear to be for descendants of William Kennedy/Canada of Halifax. The spelling "Canada" or "Canady" appears to have held up longer on William's side of the family than for the Davidson County group. I am using the modern "Kennedy" spelling, unless working from a transcription. I am not repeating Davidson County NC for marriage, birth or death locations, as most are there. I will indicate otherwise, or not known, for locations not Davidson County, NC. There are lots of dates, and backup for much of it may be substantial. I present it for its potential, and extended it so that you could see Clarence's line of descent. I'll consider Clarence's first three generations further, using data and observations provided by Chuck Kennedy. Here is my slightly condensed version of Chuck's writeup: The Mormon International Genealogical Index shows a John Kennedy b 18 February 1714 in Perth, Scotland, son of Alexander Kinnadie and Jane Johnstone. He is evidently the John Kennedy, age 32, who was shipped on 5 May 1747 from Liverpool, England as a prisoner aboard the Veteran. Of the prisoners taken at the Battle of Culloden Moor in the Second Jacobite Rebellion in 1745/6, about 1,000 were sent in five ships to be servants in the Colonies of Maryland, Virginia, Jamaica and Barbados. The prisoners aboard Veteran were destined for the "Leeward Islands & Jamaica" according to British records, but the ship was captured on 28 June 1747 by a French Privateer off the island of Antigua (one of the Leeward Islands). The ship was taken to the French island of Martinique, where the prisoners were set free by the Governor. The description of John Kennedy given by the British to the French when they requested the return of the prisoners from the Veteran, lists him as being 5'9", 32 years of age, black hair, profession of labourer, and "well made", which is taken to mean well built. As a “labourer,” he would probably not have been formally educated. Consistent with this is the fact that the John Kennedy of Halifax County, VA and who came to Randolph County, North Carolina signed his will and deeds with a “mark.” As an escaped prisoner John Kennedy was wanted by the British. The prisoners were under sentence of banishment from Great Britain, and were thus forbidden to return to Great Britain, under threat of execution. In 1743, the King set up a reward of £40 for anyone who turned in a banished prisoner who returned prematurely. John was effectively a lifetime slave: returning to Scotland was not an option and it was likely that he would seek an area away from British authority, as among other Scotsmen. Given the amount of commerce between the West Indies and the Colonies during the middle of the 18th Century, it is reasonable to presume that many of the freed Scottish prisoners from the Veteran made their way to the Colonies. Some of them could well have made their way to Virginia by 1748 or shortly thereafter. The area of Halifax County was remote from British authority in the 1750's and was populated by Scots. From all information which has been gathered, as well as failure to turn up any information to the contrary despite extensive research, it may well be that the John Kennedy of Perth, Scotland and the John Kennedy of Halifax County, Virginia are the same. While proof is lacking that the first John Kennedy of Halifax County, VA is the John Kennedy of Perth, Scotland, we do know there is strong tradition among the Kennedys that we came from Scotland; stories of a fugitive exist in more than one family line; Scots settled in the area around Halifax County, VA; and that there was sufficient animosity against the English in the family to allow 18 year old Sherwood to volunteer to join the Militia. This alone has some significance in that historians such as H. Henry Lumpkin, Ph.D. has said that of the estimated three million people in the 13 colonies, about 1 million supported the revolution, 1 million were loyalists, and 1 million “didn’t give a damn.” Now, back to our subject, the ostensible immigrant, John Kennedy: John Kennedy I appears in Halifax County VA records, virtually from the county’s 1753 inception. Based on the births of his children, known and imputed, he probably was just married and starting his family in 1753, so he may not have left records elsewhere in the American colonies. He evidently did not record any deeds in Halifax, which may well have been because he was a fugitive and didn't want to raise his profile to a "suspicion level, " as Chuck refers to above. By the time that John thought that the American Revolution had developed enough momentum, he may have decided that he could safely come out of hiding, the determining factor in his move to North Carolina. Once in NC, he evidently felt comfortable in filing for a land patent, particularly to get land for three of his maturing children at a reasonable cost. John I, wife Sarah and children John II, Sherwood and Anne migrated to (now) Randolph County NC in 1777, leaving son William in Virginia. John I obtained a land grant from the State of NC, 300 acres on Wynet Branch of Second Creek in 1782. John I died there, leaving a will dated 18 Apr 1782 naming wife Sarah, children John, William, Anne and Sherwood Canady. Sherwood Canady and Samuel Lewis were named executors of the will, which was probated 2nd Monday June 1782. Sherwood Kennedy, as executor, sold the land to William Webster in 1790 John Canaday, Sener received one other land grant (posthumously) in Randolph County. The warrant was issued in 1780 and the survey was dated 1785, for 200A on the south side of Lane's Creek, adjoining David Lewis's entry, near Charlie's Mountain. Sherwood Kennedy, of Rowan County, as executor of the estate of John Kennedy, decd., sold this land to Thomas Moris in 1801. More details are included in the Randolph County section of deeds description in Appendix B. The migration pattern of John Kennedy came from testimony in his son Sherwood Kennedy's Revolutionary War Pension File. Other records show that William Canady, John's son, evidently stayed in Halifax County, as I find substantial data for him there, and none in Randolph County or later in Rowan and Davidson Counties, where Sherwood and John lived. What I have on William Canady will be covered in the Virginia section. The only information I have on sister Anne Kennedy regards a 27 June 1793 land grant in Randolph County that she received, located on Lain's Creek and Sherwood's line, Millsaps' corner. On 13 August 1802, Ann, of Rowan County, sold this land to Frederick Farmer for $200. A Sarah Kennedy (John’s widow) was head of household in the Randolph County 1790 Census, with two other females. Ann Kennedy was likely one of the two. Since her brothers Sherwood and John Kennedy moved to Rowan County by 1800, Ann evidently moved with them, but I haven't found further trace of her. Before I split to separate sections on John II and Sherwood Kennedy, I should mention that the early Kennedys were members of Abbots Creek Baptist Church. The minutes of that Church---Primitive Baptist, after the split, have been microfilmed, and I have seen such at the High Point Public Library. (Patricia Hiatt has also transcribed them in an issue of the Davidson County Genealogical Journal, but I haven't the specific reference.) They contain a number of membership lists, dated 3 Apr 1790; 9 Oct 1802; 1 Dec 1810 and 1818. There were no Kennedys listed on the 3 Apr 1790 list, which is understandable, since they were then still living in south Randolph. On the 9 Oct 1802 roll, separated between men and women: John Canady Rebecka Canady Sherod Canady Elizabeth Canady On the 1 Dec 1810 roll, likewise organized: John Caneday Rebecka Canaday Sharrad Caneday Elizabeth Canaday 1818 Roll John Canada Rebecca Canada Sherwood Canada Elizabeth Canada Epaphroditis Kennedy Sarah Canada (spelling butchered, of course) John Kennedy II Section John Kennedy II, son of John I of the Randolph County 1782 will, was probably born in Halifax County VA, about 1753. He was over 45 on the 1800 Census for Rowan County and not taxed as a poll in Cpt Tacker's District, Rowan County, 1803--presumably then 50 years or older. John evidently married Elizabeth, surname perhaps Sparrow, in Halifax County VA, as their proposed son James Kennedy said in 1850 that he was born in VA. This matches with Sherwood Kennedy Sr.’s pension application comment that the family moved to NC in 1777. John II died by 16 Aug 1822, when the administration of his estate was granted to William Kennady, the widow having relinquished her right. Sureties for William were Isaac Pope and E(msley) Burton, £750. (Ironically, Isaac Burton's administrator qualified at that same term: I descend from both, and there was considerable intermarriage between the two families.) The real estate was listed as John Canaday Sen decd. in the first extant tax list for that section of Davidson County: 1828. Elizabeth Kennedy was on the Davidson County 1830 Census, living alone and age 70-80, and begins appearing as the owner of the land of John Kennedy senr in 1833, 100A valued at $200, later valued at $100. She is dead by 8 August 1836, when her son Sherwood Kennedy qualified as administrator. Sale was submitted 10 Sep and Inventory Nov, both 1836. Final settlement was dated 15 August 1838. The land was listed in the name of John Kennedy decd. in 1837 and 1838 and may have been the separate tract listed by Sparrow Kennedy in 1839 and 1840. Guessing at John II's children would normally be a struggle, since there was no will, no estate papers for John and nothing definitive in Elizabeth's, and he and Sherwood and subsequent generations lived in the same neighborhood. But Sherwood had a comprehensive will and his Bible record survives, giving names and birth dates of his children. These allowed me to isolate John II's children, presuming that William's remained in Virginia or went somewhere besides Davidson County. William, incidentally, had a will probated in Halifax County VA, although he did not name all of his children in it. (See Virginia Section.) I will code the generations following John II and Sherwood, giving John’s first. John Kennedy's children, perhaps by Elizabeth, her surname unknown: Surname KENNEDY A. John III, (c1773-by 9 Sep 1822) b Halifax Co VA, d Davidson Co , married Martha (unknown) who survived him B. James (1 Jan 1775, Halifax Co, VA- 27 Oct 1855, Davidson Co.) married Mary Berkshire (31 Jan 1775-9 Oct 1855) daughter of Henry Berkshire and Drucilla Burton. James and Mary are both buried at Pleasant Grove. Mary's parents are derived from a Quitclaim Deed from James and Polly Kennedy to John Berkshire of Floyd County IN dated 3 July 1828, in which James & Polly quitclaim all rights to lands in Floyd County IN which Henry Berkshire devised to his daughter Polly, aforesaid wife of said James Kennedy. See Davidson Deeds 4:396 in Appendix B. Drucilla's origins were communicated to me by my cousin Pete Wrike, of Cobbs Creek VA. She was a sister of our mutual ancestor Isaac Burton, who migrated with his growing family from Montgomery County MD to Rowan County NC by 1786. Isaac was the father of Jesse, John, Bazel, Thomas and Emsley Burton, Crissy Millis and Chloe Newton. There may have been other children. C. Epaphroditis (Eppy), (16 Sep 1785- 8 Sep 1875) born Randolph Co; 1st married Sarah Kendall, c1811; 2nd married Susanna Hilton 19 Sep 1841, Davidson Co; Susanna died 8 Apr 1893, age 80; she and Eppy are buried at Pleasant Grove D. Sarah, born c1787 Randolph Co, died after 1870, prob. Guilford County, married by 1818 Jesse Burton (1772 MD-3 Mar 1850 Guilford Co.) Jesse Burton is buried at Prospect, and Sarah probably is, but she has no marker. She was on the Guilford County censuses for 1850-1870 in the household of John and Elizabeth (Burton) Kennedy, her oldest living daughter. E. Sherwood, b c1795: 1st md Rowan Co 18 Nov 1821 to Elizabeth Wilson, with Thomas Twidell as bondsman; 2nd md 8 Oct 1828, Davidson Co to Alis Elizabeth Connor. Sherwood was administrator of his mother Elizabeth Kennedy's estate, which was settled in 1838. Sherwood immediately moved with family to Eden Twp, Schuyler County IL. F. Rhoda, b. c1795 is a possibility. There is a Rowan County Marriage Bond, dated 15 June 1817 between Rhoda Kennedy and George Ball, with George Burgess as bondsman. A George Ball was bondsman for (A-2) Osie Kennedy's marriage to Benjamin Cecil, dated 9 Feb 1817 in Rowan County. John Kennedy II may have had other children who can't be readily identified in the records. The Censuses that show John II as head of family are summarized, as to the children only: 1800 Rowan 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16; 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16 1810 Rowan 2 males 10-16; 2 females 16-26 1820 Rowan 2 males 18-26; no females (Evidently, John's children were born between 1780 and 1800, with 2 of the boys nearer 1800, and 2 of the girls nearer 1790. John II was shown as head of family for the first time in 1800, James in 1810, Eppy in 1820.) Second Generation: Descendants of John Kennedy II A. James Kennedy (1 Jan 1775-27 Oct 1855) and Mary Berkshire (31 Jan 1775-9 Oct 1855) presumably all children born between 1800 and 1820, surname KENNEDY Please note: there are assumptions made, based strictly on circumstantial evidence, about the inclusion of James and Mary B. Kennedy's children, in the absence of a will, estate papers, land division or other document which would show James's heirs. In particular, Thos. Sparrow and Daniel D Kennedy are included here for discussion purposes: they belong somewhere and their respective birth dates don't disqualify them, based on census data showing the makeup of James's family. More or better data will be needed to qualify these lines of descent. Sarah unknown, (c1805-living 1880) Comment: I am influenced to class Sparrow as a son of James because of his age. In the 1850-1880 Davidson County Censuses, he consistently comes in with an implied birth date after 1800, although not by much. If he were older, he could be a son of John I. Nancy Smith's family material states that John had a daughter Mary, married to Tom Kennedy and a son Buck (perhaps John) but doesn't mention Sparrow per se. Otherwise, my projection agrees with that record. Public records, tax lists in particular, refer to "Sparrow" or "Thomas S.,” since John III had a son (A-5) Thomas, who was also in Davidson County during this period. A-5 Thomas is consistently referred to as Thomas--without the S--and is a little bit younger, so that the two aren't as hard to keep separate as they might be. Lloyd Franklin Mathews Sherwood Kennedy Section Sherwood Kennedy (14 Oct 1760, Halifax Co VA--6 Apr 1841, Davidson Co) was married 3 times: 1st to Sarah Coggins (24 Feb 1764-2 Oct 1822), c 1782, prob Rowan County, where the Coggins were living--now the Jackson Hill section of South Davidson 2nd to Nancy/Ann Mayfield (widow of James Hilton) 15 Mar 1823, Davidson County--Ann died 18 Nov 1837, bur Pinewood cemetery, Davidson Co 3rd to Mary Nugent (widow), 7 Jun 1840, Guilford County, who survived him. Sherwood's birth date came from his Revolutionary War Pension file, and the month and day of death--6 April, also came from that source. The year quoted in the pension file was 1842, which is probably wrong, since the will was made in Davidson County 31 Dec 1840 and probated May term, 1841. So 6 April 1841 would be a credible date. Before listing Sherwood’s children, I would note that the two older boys, John & William, ultimately left Davidson County, whilst the two younger boys, Sherwood II and Burrell remained in Davidson. There was almost a generation separating these two sets of brothers. Sherwood, in his will, gives wife Mary her year's provision and $40; 2 sons Sherwood and Burrell are to have his smith tools; to 2 sons William and John and 3 daughters Rebecca, Patience and Levina, all property received from me plus 25 cents; and to 4 daughters Sarah Green, Ann Leonard, Elizabeth Kennedy and Letha Jones plus wife the residue of estate and proceeds. Evidently Sherwood outlived his daughter Patty, and had not provided for the 4 daughters last named during his lifetime. In Sherwood Kennedy's estate papers, his widow asks for an accounting, claiming that there was no residual to get her $40 bequest from, and that all of the cash would have to be used to pay debts. According to Sherwood Kennedy's Federal Pension Application, he entered service from Guilford County NC November 1778 in Cpt Enoch Davis's Company, Col. Lock's Regiment, Gen Rutherford, commander. He participated in the battle of Brier Creek, mentions Col. "Pervard", Gen. Briant and Col. Lytle. After the battle, they recrossed the river (from GA into SC) and marched down the river to the white house, where at the expiration of his term of service, he was given a discharge signed by Cpt Enoch Davis, which he gave to the Davidson County Court, 15 November 1832. In the fall of 1780, Sherwood stated that he was then living in Randolph County, (which was formed from part of Guilford in 1779) was drafted for 3 months into Cpt John Johnson's Company, Col. Colyer's Reg which rendezvoused at Bell's Mill on Deep River and marched to Salisbury, where Col. Judithan Harper took command in Colyer's stead. Sherwood was an orderly sergeant in Johnson's Company; at the end of the 3 months, he was given a discharge signed by the Captain. Johnson came to Sherwood's house sometime after, asked for the discharge, which Sherwood gave him, and he never saw it again. Sherwood said that he was born 14 October 1760 in Halifax County, VA and came to Guilford County in 1777, and has resided since the revolution in Guilford, Randolph, Rowan and Davidson Counties---he now (15 Nov 1832) resides in Davidson. Ashley Swaim, a clergyman, and Samuel Cecil vouched for Sherwood's testimony. Sherwood lived in Rowan, about the time of his marriage, as he was on that County's tax lists for Capt. Runyon's District in 1784 (with 50 acres and a white poll) and was an insolvent with a white poll and Alex Snider in 1785. Perhaps he had moved back to Randolph County, where he was on the 1790 census, in his erstwhile home area near Second Creek. I suspect that he tried living near his in-laws, the Coggins, for a while, and then thought better of it. Sherwood and John Kennedy are both on the Rowan County Census in 1800. The first deed I have found for either in Rowan is dated 9 Feb 1802: Stephen Vedito to Sherwood Kennedy, 100A on Rich Fork, adj. Joseph Harmon and Elijah Pope, witn: Joshua Albertson and James Kennedy and pr. Nov 1808. Sherwood Kennedy's children, all by 1st wife Sarah Coggins: F. Patty, b. 13 Oct 1783; a family Bible record gives the birth of William Burton as 26 Nov 1806, with the notation “son of one of the Kenneday girls who married a Burton and died soon after the birth of William; the Kennedays reared him." Patty is the only child listed in the births of Sherwood Kennedy's children that he did not mention in his will, so she must have been the mother of William Burton. Given the presence of Isaac Burton's family near the Kennedys, it's most likely that the father was one of Isaac Burton's sons. Thomas Burton had an 1808 marriage bond with Patience: H, below. The Burton part of this puzzle is still unsolved. G. Rebecca, b. 21 Mar 1786 H. Patience may not have married Thomas Burton. There is a subsequent marriage bond dated 18 Feb 1809, Rowan County between Thomas Burton and Sarah Epps. (David was doubtless related to John’s wife Marcy Daniel.) As detailed in the Davidson County deed section, John sold most, if not all of the Cabin Creek land, bought 81.5 acres on Hambies Creek (near Thomasville and the Randolph line in North Davidson), then mortgaged that land and apparently lost it for debts to William Kennedy (Burrell Kennedy acted as the trustee) and left Davidson County by 1837, when he was missing from Capt. Conrad’s Davidson County Tax List. Particularly through the given names Marcy and Jordan---since John is so common it is not a good identifier---descendant Janette Barbee tracked the family into Stanly, with forays into Anson, since they lived on or near the Rocky River, Stanly's southern border with Union and Anson. Virginia Section John Kennedy I appears to be present in Halifax County from its beginning in 1753. I have never found a deed describing land that he owned, which suggested his reason for moving to NC, so that he and children would have a chance at land of their own. There are a variety of references to John Kennedy in the Pleas Books. On 20 Dec 1752, John Cannaday and John Maddin, represented by their attorney Thomas Nash, were granted a continuance until next court to answer a charge of trespass, assault and battery brought by William Roberts by Clement Read, his attorney. The case was continued at least through 16 August 1754. The grand jury accused John Cannaday of rash and profane swearing, on the information of Edward Parker on 15 May 1753. That case was continued, until 19 Sep 1753, when John Cannaday failed to appear and was fined 5s, or 50 # tobacco, to be paid to the church wardens of Antrim Parish. In a 19 Sep 1754 case of Charles Burnes v. John Dudgen and William Irwin for trespass, assault and battery, witnesses called were William Russell, John Farmer, M.B. Russell, Ephraim Hill and John Cannaday. On 16 Jan 1755, cases by both John Cannaday and William Carley against William Irwin were dismissed. John Cannady and John Morefield were sued for debt of £2 15s by Robert Richman in June 1763; they did not appear. Judgment for Richman against Cannady for half the sum and interest from 3 Oct 1762 was granted. John Cannady sued Memucan Hunt in July 1763, but didn't press the suit and it was dismissed, with Hunt recovering 5s in costs. (Chuck Kennedy observes the tendency of John Cannady to withdraw or be passive, with respect to these court actions, which is consistent with the mindset of a fugitive, who'd rather lay low than fight.) In Philmer Wills estate account current, 17 Dec 1772, John Canady is mentioned, in connection with laying off of the widow's thirds; Epaphroditis Hill's bond was mentioned. During this time, Epaphroditis White was Sheriff in Halifax County. Recall that James Kennedy apparently named two sons Epaphroditis and Thomas Sparrow. Observe the following, relative to Sparrow. Epaphroditis Hill, with James Wood and John R Philpot, witnessed the will of Thomas Seymoor in Lunenburg County, made 22 Dec 1748 and probated 4 July 1749. Mentioned were wife Saray Seymoor, John Sparrow, and George and William Saymoor. In Halifax Deeds 1:487, 15 Mar 1759, John (+) Sparrow, planter, deeded William Chandler 100A on Difficult Creek for £10, part of 400A devised to John Sparrow by the last will of his stepfather Thomas Seamore, recorded in Lunenburg County. Witnesses were William Wright, Richard Eckhols, Nat. Abney and Robert Hudson, recorded 15 Mar 1759. John Sparrow was listed with a tithe, 6 scalps and heads in Cornelius Cargill's list of tithes, 1749 in Lunenburg County. William Canaday acquired land from William Murphey, Antrim Parish, Halifax: 200A in Halifax on branches of Difficult Creek, where Murphey now lives and part of a tract belonging to William McCrarey, and adjoining John Sparrow and Ruban Ragland. Witnesses were Ephraim Hill, Robert Dickey and John (x) Seemster. On 25 April 1786, Thomas Sparrow deeded John Sparrow about 100A and William Sparrow about 100A adjoining his own land and William Cannady, as well as John Sumster, William McCraw, and others. Elizabeth Sparrow is mentioned; from contents of a consecutive group of tax lists covering the years 1782-1791, she is evidently the widow of a John Sparrow sr, and Thomas, John and William appear to be their 3 sons. John Sparrow is present, without other Sparrows in the 1760s and later, and is joined by Thomas on the 1782 list. In 1783, there are John sr, John jr and Thomas, one John in 1784 plus William, and Elizabeth is on the lists of 1785-1787. Thomas Sparrow is consistently on all of the 1782-1791 lists. I don't know where the Sparrows came from; there were substantial numbers of them in Maryland and in eastern Virginia, and I haven't done enough research to sort them out. While John Kennedy I apparently did not own land, he evidently lived near the land his son William later bought. From Halifax Deeds 10:123 dated 15 Dec 1775, John (I) Bowmar, John (+) Cannady and Joseph Haynes witnessed a deed from John Dudgeon to Thomas Hanner for 100A+ (£25) on the north side of Terrible Creek, bounded by William Younger, George Seamore's line at Blank's Road, part of a tract formerly belonging to Shepard. rec 19 Sep 1776 On 20 Oct 1786, William Cannaday (/s) and wife Isbell (x) deeded c185A on branches of Difficult Creek to John Bowmar jr for £75, bounded by William McCraw, William Hodges, Thomas Sparrow, John Seamster, Ephraim Hill, William Bomar. Witnesses were John Shaw, Alexander Bowmar, John (x) Butler, and John (x) Semster. Isbell relinquished her right of dower and the deed was recorded 17 May 1787. William Cannady bought c248A for £62 on the head branches of Hunting Creek on 12 Dec 1793. It appeared to be an estate settlement: grantors were Jeffery Palmer, wife Susannah; Frances Irby, John Hilliard and wife Phebe, John Nicholds and wife Mary, of Halifax & Pittsylvania Co. Witnesses were Elias Palmer, Nathan Glenn, Moses Palmer, Francis Irby jr, Moses Fontain, Elisha Palmer, John Fuqua, John Brandon and Federick Chandler, recorded 27 Jan 1794. On 2 Feb 1795, William Hill sold William Cannaday c70A for £40 on the branches of the south prong of Difficult Creek, bounded by Shaw, Coleman and William Hill. Witnesses: John Shaw, John (x) Luese, John (x) Seamster, recorded 23 Feb 1795 William Kennedy was married to Isbell, probably the daughter of William Hill. The oldest son was William Hill Kennedy and there are numerous references to William Hill as a neighbor and grantor of land to William and Isbell Kennedy. I have not found a record of the marriage, but it may have taken place in Halifax County about 1768. Relative to the projection of the following as their 3 eldest children: William Hill Kennedy, first taxable on the Halifax County list for 1789, thus born near 1768. Notes, relative to the abstracting of deeds: Rather than replicating the grantor at the end of the abstract, in order to show whether he signed or made a mark---if that were recorded---I showed it at the beginning of the abstract, in naming the grantor. Examples: Sherwood Kennedy signed, which I showed by (/s), whilst Epy Kennedy made his mark, i.e. (x). Most references to trees that are the sole description of corners have been left off; if the corner is a pine corner of John Kennedy, John's name is in the abstract, but not the pine. I sometimes included the tree, if I thought it would improve the transcription. Directions are shown as N for North, S for South, E for East and W for West. I cannot handily show a degree and did not want to spell it out. North 20 degrees West becomes N20W. Distance was measured in chains on surveys of larger tracts, and in poles for smaller ones. A chain is equal to 4 poles and there are 100 links in a chain, hence I give a measurement of 42 chains, 24 links as 42.24 chains. Most of these lots were larger than later surveys, so most are described in chain measurement. A question mark (?) means that I couldn't read that part of the description, and couldn't puzzle it out from the other dimensions. Whilst I normally spelled Kennedy as such in my writeups, for ease of transcription, I noted the spelling as I picked it up from the deed, for each of the names. Acreage was often estimated. I show such as 43+ A or c43A (circa), the latter if the term "more or less" is used. The term (swears) indicates the witness(es) that were present at the proving of the deed, which places said witness at the probate, which could occur many years later than the execution that was witnessed.
