Update! 21.11.06

I thought that this deserved to be used in evidence against the making of the HDM films. Behold! New Line's business practices and how, no matter what, making money is always the top priority for them.

What do we believe?
  • That the film version of His Dark Materials should not be made.
  • That any film made by Hollywood in general and New Line in particular will not uphold the true meaning and beauty of His Dark Materials
  • His Dark Materials is powerful enough to get its message across without the need for a film. The film is superfluous.

Thank you for visiting! Welcome to our page dedicated to the Society for the Protection of His Dark Materials. We are a group of people, mainly belonging to the forum The Republic of Heaven, who believe that the up-and-coming film adaptation of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" is unnecessary, wrong and should be stopped.

While we understand that this goal is a long-shot we also know that we cannot let our voices go unheard. We object to the aims of the New Line producers whose only interest is the bottom line, the money.

So, this is our voice. It's quite simple at the moment, as this is the first try, but we hope at least it will turn the volume up for our protest.

If you want to join, click on the button above and fill out the form. When you join you get a hug from Sophie, the President, or Baltaje, the Prime Minister, and also a free drink of your choice. Please note: hug and drink are cyber hugs and cyber drinks only for cost and practical reasons.

Special thanks to Bethan (siren_darkstarr) for suggesting we make a site to begin with. *hugs*

Update! 25.10.06

After a brief discussion on the forum of whether Lee Scoresby had been cut, it was announced that Sam Elliott will be playing our beloved Texan aeronaut.

Meanwhile, filming continues and CBBC have revealed the first pictures of "Lyra" although we are told that they are not Dakota Richards, but her double used for long shots. Also in the pictures we see the Gyptian not-so-narrow boats, and our first look at the on-screen daemons. See here

And, of course, the merchandising has begun. BTTS reports that a toy company has been granted the rights to make the toys for the film (see here) and Scholastic will be publishing companions for the film and new editions of the HDM trilogy replacing, we assume, the beautiful cover art with Dakota Richards and Nicole Kidman. What fun!

Also, Eleanor noticed that on the IMDB site for Ian McShane - who is reported to be playing the "king of the bears" - he is listed as playing "Ragnar". Is it possible that Iofur has been renamed in order to dumb Northern Lights down? Do the film makers think their viewer so unintelligent that they can't distinguish between Iorek and Iofur?

Update! 27.09.06

Long time since we've been updated, and lots has happened. Daniel Craig has been confirmed as Lord Asriel. Philip Pullman has written another email to his fans telling us how much he loved seeing all the work that's being done for the film. You can read it here if you aren't already on his mailing list. Make of it what you will. Personally, I think it's all very well and good looking at props and the cast and thinking they're wonderful, but that doesn't mean the actual film is going to be any good. After all, the props and cast for Harry Potter were pretty cool too. I mean... they had Richard Harris and Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman...

More importantly, filming has started in Oxford for Northern Lights. Here and here you can see pictures of Kidman as Coulter. This is big news and (unwanted) progress for us, since if it were up to us they'd never have got this far.

As for Dakota Richards, we've not seen a picture of her and we (the fans) don't know anything about her. Apparently she's been running around Oxford with Daniel Craig dressed in costume. We're left in the dark though.

So much for Weitz's promise that he'd deal with us as "openly as possible"...

Update! 10.08.06

Phew! No Bettany. What a relief!

Update! 08.08.06

Exciting news! We've reached 30 Members, which means that the next Member will have to move over to another page. W00t.

In other news, there are rumours that Eva Green will be playing Serafina Pekkala (or Pekula, as the media have renamed her). Bettany has not yet been confirmed (as far as we are aware) thank goodness but, since the other rumours have been true, it looks likely that he has the part. bridgetothestars.net reports that Ian McShane is going to be voicing Iorek, and there is a sound clip of him there. Clare Higgins will be playing Ma Costa.

The Raevyn has re-written her rant on His Dark Materials, Religion and the Film.

Update!
31.07.06

Well, it's all happening now. Nicole Kidman will be playing Mrs Coulter, unknown Dakota Blue Richards will be Lyra and Adam Godley will be voicing Pantalaimon. It is also rumoured that Paul Bettany will be playing Lord Asriel. It's moving along and we're all getting worried, not only because - despite Chris Weitz's promise that the fans will be very involved in the making of the film - we're getting very little information about what's going on but also because this film seems to actually be happening. Although sources are leaking through and they've finally confirmed rumours about Nicole Kidman, the fans are being left in the dark until very late. No better time to join the Society, my dear Sraffies.
