Collaboration for the Scumettes Zine is underway!

With this zine we are shooting to be the polar opposite of Seventeen, irreverent and exciting. We want to inspire, heal, and share our stories and information with all girls. We are hoping to create an alternative the mainstream magazines that leave us disapointed after their new promises of beauty have worn off. This zine should be inspiring and encouraging to all girls, thought-provoking, not finger-pointing...

send in anything you want. a few suggestions: your thoughts on your body, stories, an ad-bust or culture jam, artwork, vindication against corporate anti-body oppression, why anarcha-feminism or feminism is important to you and why you got involved, information on advertising and corporations, books, music, and movie recommendation, thoughts on girl jealousy and girl friendship...

email to arwyn at menstrualmadonna at yahoo.com or write to get one of our addresses to send hard copies.

RESISTANCE IS FERTILE

The following is our first collaboration, written on the 21st of January, 2006:

We are taking back control

...Whether or not laws get changed we are taking back control of our bodies and our lives. We are out here on the 33rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade to be a visible presence to inspire and support other women. To us feminism is so much more than equal pay in an office job. We want to be happy in our bodies. We want the right to choose- abortion, whether or not to have sex, whether or not to shave our legs, what kind of life we want to have. We want the control to bring a child into the world safely at a time of our choosing. The world we bring our children into should be supportive and loving, our children should have enough food and a good education that is provided free and equally to everyone. The current structure of society does not allow for most of those human rights.

Abortion, birth control, and education are components of health care and health care is a human right. Adequate birth control, which should definitely be free and available, can prevent pregnancies. But bottom line, people have sex, and if a woman gets pregnant, having a baby should not be punishment. A baby should not be the equivalent to a prison sentence for sex.

Also, we understand that finding a safe abortion provider is so difficult that abortion has, in many ways, become illegal. We support any woman who decides to have an abortion, whether it is legal or illegal--we support women’s rights no matter what the laws are, and we support any woman who learns about how her body works and teaches other women. One of our members, who is a future midwife, will perform abortions whether it is legal or illegal.

Bottom line, America, we support women making their own decisions anywhere.
