Amazing as it may seem, this picture, thanks to an ever present LIFE photographer, shows how the Marines had to get ashore at Guadalcanal. Alas, they had to row, excellent exercise but one Japanese soldier on the beach could have made this a rough day. Fortunately the Japanese High Command had predicted that there would be no American invasion anywhere for another six months.
