HOT NEW REVIEWS UPDATED ON MARCH 1 - 2007

BEYOND TWILIGHT ‘FOR THE LOVE OF ART AND THE MAKING’ (NIGHTMARE RECORDS)

The new BEYOND TWILIGHT CD is as close to Progressive Metal as you can get. Singer this time is BJORN JANSSON and the sound is incredible, really huge sounding as if this was DREAM THEATER on a major label. However, BEYOND TWILIGHT is more akin to BALANCE OF POWER, yet a bit more aggressive here and there. However, the melodies are all over the place, both vocally and in the instrumental parts where the guitar and keyboardsolos are quite stunning. Funnily enough you should play the CD in one straight listen, as the 43 1-minutes counting songs form together 1 full-length song. While listening you will not notice the fact these are 43 songs, because you are taken into a journey of BEYOND TWILIGHT. The album was already released sometime ago in Europe and now also in the USA through NIGHTMARE RECORDS. More at: http://www.silentplanetpromotions.com/

LE GRAND ‘LE GRAND’ (ROUGH TRADE/ROASTINGHOUSE/ZYX MUSIC)

Swedish band with a CD release that sounds very impressive to say the least. It’s Rock like it is sounding in the 21st century, so with strong melodies and an updated modern rock approach. LE GRAND sounds like they were the latest big thing from the UK, sort of like ARCTIC MONKEYS, THE KILLERS, KAISER CHIEFS, etc. yet they are a Swedish band and with strong rockers like “Calling you”, “Nothin to lie about” and “Fall with me” they could easily hit the charts here in Europe. No Emo or Punk here, just good strong pure Rock. Check these guys for yourself at: http://www.legrandmusic.com

ZENOBIA ‘DELAYED’ (QUIXOTE MUSIC)

German band formed more than years ago and releasing their 2nd album ‘Delayed’. Musically typical progressive rock like so many other bands, so not really original. On the other hand, fans of especially EVERON, IQ, PENDRAGON… might be enjoying this release a lot. The sound and production is very good and the only slight complaint is that the singer has a slight accent. However, instrumental this ZENOBIA sounds perfect for any Neo-Prog fan out there. 6 long songs are included and especially the epic “Meet your maker” is a must-have for the proggers. Not a sensational release and also do not confuse this ZENOBIA from Berlin/Germany with the amazing Spanish band of the same name . More info at: http://www.zenobia-music.de

TEA FOR TWO ‘TWISTED’ (QUIXOTE MUSIC)

Formed 20 years ago, the German band TEA FOR TWO has been going into different directions through the years, because they started as Blues/Folk type of band, evolving into a progband, but now in 2006 their new album ‘Twisted’ is a sort of calm acoustic type of folk prog pop album. Not sure if they would still play support act for ARENA.like they did 10 years ago, because the music is way too different, well at least after hearing the opening track “Twisted”. Next track “Soundscapes” for example is quite proggy then again and the rest of the CD is at times sort of medieaval folk ish pop and at other times more proggy like a calmer RUSH. Not your typical prog CD, but for sure something worth checking out if you’re an open-minded progfan, especially listen to the song “Autumn” which is sounding a lot like RUSH, but be aware that it is quite a calm album, yet with some strong melodies here and there. GRENDEL ‘LOST BEYOND RETRIEVAL’ (INDEPENDENT)

Here is another very impressive release from Finland. The band is called GRENDEL and we already reviewed one of their albums in the past, but with their new CD ‘Lost beyond retrieval’, they have released a very strong album that contains your typical catchy European Melodic (Power) Metal with a bit raw dark vocals (HIM style), yet musically going into a NOSTRADAMEUS/THUNDERSTONE kinda direction. Most of the 9 included songs are very impressive and feature some very strong memorable choruses. It all reminds me a lot of the recently released album of the band DAWN OF SILENCE. Definitely an album to get when you are into traditional Melodic European Metal! Although released independently, the sound is huge, so better check out GRENDEL at: http://www.grendelband.com  and e-mail at: mika@grendelband.com

SWEET TEAZE ‘GROOVIN’ ON THE BACKSIDE’ (SUN CITY RECORDS)

SUN CITY RECORDS is the name of the Australian label which is one of the very few labels worldwide to concentrate on doing re-issues of rare late 80s/early 90s Hair Metal albums. Very cool for the collector and anyone who misses the days of WARRANT, WINGER, SKID ROW, FIREHOUSE, SLAUGHTER… Most of the releases concern unknown bands that never got that major label deal, but were still good enough to be unheard. Now 16+ years after the original recordings, the releases on SUN CITY RECORDS are a blessing, because the sound is excellent and the artwork/liner notes are extensive, so the whole package of the releases is quite good. SWEET TEAZE with ‘Groovin on the backside’ is one of their releases. Surely a must-have if you like your TRIXTER/SKID ROW/WARRANT/DIRTY BLONDE type of groovy Hair Metal. Sound is very good and although dated to some, this sure is worth checking out asap if you like Hair Metal in best 80s format. Maybe not as good as mentioned bands, still very much in the same style and with songs like “Borrowed time” and “Heartless woman” quite enjoyable. Available through: http://www.suncityrecords.com

(Points: 8.2 out of 10)

QUIET RIOT ‘REHAB’ (DEMOLITION RECORDS)

QUIET RIOT has once again made a comeback, which is the 10th return of the band that will never repeat the big impact they had back in 1983 with their million seller ‘Metal health’. The new CD is titled ‘Rehab’, which musically is not far away from their last couple of albums, so a sort of modern groovy Hardrockalbum with some typical QUIET RIOT choruses here and there (“Beggars and thieves”), but in general trying to sound classic and modern at the same time. It is definitely a good album and perhaps their best since the 1980s, but not a sensational record. Fans of LED ZEPPELIN should check out some of the stuff here as the songs come dangerously close to classic ZEPPELIN and therefore QUIET RIOT is also sounding modern at the same time, because new bands like WOLFMOTHER, THE ANSWER and ROADSTAR are doing the same thing. Just listen to the song “South of heaven” and you would swear you are listening to LED ZEPPELIN in their heydays, yet with a modern production and also THE WHO comes around sometimes (such as in “Black reign”). Like said before, a good high quality QUIET RIOT record, but not as good as in calling this a classic release.

TWISTED SISTER ‘A TWISTED CHRISTMAS’ (DEMOLITON RECORDS)

We have been waiting for like 20 years for a new studio CD of the bastards of rock and roll: TWISTED SISTER. Now it is 2006 and after a live DVD and a re-recorded ‘Stay hungry’ CD the past few years, it was time for the real deal, but I am afraid we are fooled here. This is a Christmas album! Why on earth didn’t the band record a real new studio CD with new original songs instead of this useless Christmas covers CD… Even though DORO and LITA FORD make an appearance here and the performance is of course good, this CD is really not interesting at all. Everyone was waiting for something new of TWISTED SISTER, but what we get hear is a record you play once every year to have some fun at a party and then forget about for like 11,5 months. Why not make some new classics you can play all year instead of these Christmas tunes, mr. DEE SNIDER please go back in the studio asap to record some real music!

DEJA VU ‘BULLETS TO SPARE’ (KARTHAGO RECORDS)

A band that already existed in the eighties, but this CD is their first officially released album. Their style is 80s HEAVY METAL in the vein of JUDAS PRIEST and PRIMAL FEAR. On the album are fast songs and mid tempo songs. The fast ones are the best like ‘Wings of steel’, ‘We’ll burn the sky’ (not a SCORPIONS cover) and ‘Nightmare’ (where the singer sounds very much like BRUCE DICKINSON). A very solid release from this German band. Available through www.karthagorecords.de

(Points: 8.5 out of 10)

BUFFALO ‘RIDE THE BEAST’ (KARTHAGO RECORDS)

BUFFALO has been around since 1978, released two singles in 1981 and 1982 through HEAVY METAL RECORDS. Now these old tunes from the eighties have been released on CD, which also contains old demo songs. The sound is not that good, because it is not remastered. The music is pre NWOBHM, not unlike BUDGIE and TYGERS OF PAN TANG. Only recommended to fans who like old fashioned rock. Available through www.karthagorecords.de

(Points: 8.2 out of 10)

ALEX MASI 'LATE NIGHTS AT DESERT'S RIMROCK' (LION MUSIC)

Guitarist ALEX MASI released many solo records in the past, with the best ones under the MASI moniker. Now he has a new solo record out titled 'Late Night At Desert Rimrock'. The album also features former MALMSTEEN/ARK drummer John Macaluso. Of course the album is filled with high quality instrumental guitar virtuosity, which for the fans of Alex is something very enjoyable.

(Points: 8.0 out of 10)

PATRIK CARLSSON 'MELODIC TRAVEL' (LION MUSIC)

PATRICK CARLSSON comes out of Sweden and he released his debut 'Phraseology' on Lion Music back in 2004, now following it up with 'Melodic Travel'. On this album Patrick takes a turn into more traditional music, mixing elements of folk, jazz and classic hardrock. Guitarfreaks will surely like this release a lot...

(Points: 8.0 out of 10)

SATYRIAN 'THE DARK GIFT' (LION MUSIC)

Not sure what the reason for this release is, because musically this crosses borders in case of LION MUSIC, because this new SATYRIAN CD contains remixes that make original SATYRIAN songs now sound like Electro-Goth tunes instead of the classic Goth Metal sound they once were. Only interesting for those Goth fans whom don't like the Metal into most Goth releases of today. Sometimes it borders the lines of Metal and Industrial, so this is really a release which might only find it's way outside the Metalworld.

(Points: 6.7 out of 10)

RENEGADE ‘THE NARROW WAY’ (KARTHAGO RECORDS)

One more gems from the mid 80s German Metal explosion, namely the band RENEGADE. Classic Teutonic Metal, with raw vocals and a sound close to GRAVE DIGGER/RUNNING WILD. First 8 songs are making up their debut from 1986, while the rest is filled with all the songs from their 2nd album, which was a much more commercial 80s melodic rock affair (“Young girl in love”, “Let’s dance” and ballad “Hold on”), although also faster songs a la PRETTY MAIDS/MAD MAX were included. No bonustracks, but nevertheless all the albums of RENEGADE on 1 CD. The sound quality of their 2nd album was weaker than their debut, also due to the use of a drum machine and the fact only the debut was remastered, but still all the songs are pretty good. So a mix of classic 80s Teutonic/German Metal and some melodic rock is what to expect on this RENEGADE release, which for many years was impossible to get on LP, but now easy to get on CD remastered. Available through: http://www.karthagorecords.de

(Points: 8.2 out of 10)

TRAIL OF TEARS ‘EXISTENTIA’ (NAPALM RECORDS)

Formed back in 1994, TRAIL OF TEARS went through many different line-up changes through the years, but the Norwegian band always delivered quality albums which was quite different musically from each other. Now on this new album 'Existentia' the band sounds better than ever, yet the line-up on this album will not be the same anymore, because they recently split up. However, it was also reported the band would coninue in once again a different line-up. The band's line-up on this album features a fantastic male clean male singer and a death/black metal male growler/screamer, with some female vocals here and there. Best song is their back to back ff goth metal song “Empty room”. The band now sounds like a great mix of power/prog/goth and some death growls, heavy and sounding like THERION meets HIM, because there are also catchy melodic choruses (“As it penetrates” for example, very strong melodies) throughout the album. Good new CD with a huge sound, but 2007 will see a different TRAIL OF TEARS.

(Points: 8.4 out of 10)

GRAVE DIGGER ‘LIBERTY OR DEATH’ (LOCOMOTIVE MUSIC/ROCK INC)

For more than 20 years GRAVE DIGGER has been one of the True Metalbands in Germany. Never change a winning team and with this new release we once again can hear pure GRAVE DIGGER teutonic metal in the best 80s German tradition. 10 songs are included, no surprises, but definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of True Metal. Songs like “Ocean of blood”, “The terrible one” and “Shadowland” are a must-hear for the ACCEPT/PRIMAL FEAR/MANOWAR/RUNNING WILD fans. Another recommended album from one of the Ultimate Teutonic Metalbands!

(Points: 8.4 out of 10)

MOONLIGHT ‘INTEGRATED IN THE SYSTEM OF GUILT’ (METAL MIND PRODUCTIONS)

Experimental and different, this Polish band has been making records for quite some time now. During this time they developed an own sound. The band has a female singer (and also male vocals here and there), while musically it is sort of a mix of Goth, Prog and Ambient/New Age (and some Industrial), still also rocking with strong melodies, but just a bit different, also very laid-back sometimes. Open-minded Gothfans will like this, but for the regular goth metal fan, this might be a bit too experimental. The band is one of those bands that do not want to be compared to all the Goth metal bands out there and MOONLIGHT is indeed different and more original, but on the other hand this might only attract a selected audience. Nevertheless, this is a quality CD for sure...

(Points: 7.8 out of 10)

SAIDIAN ‘PHOENIX’ (STAY GOLD/ART UNION RECORDS)

Already out for a while in Europe, now also in Japan, the new CD of SAIDIAN, with a bonustrack in the shape of the catchy faster uptempo European melodic Power Metal song “Creatures of the night”. The new CD of the German Melodic Metalband SAIDIAN is close to the sound of EDGUY and DESTYNATION, although not as sensational as the albums of those 2 bands, but I think you’ll understand what this SAIDIAN is all about. High pitched vocals, catchy hooks and strong melodies are mixed with a classic Metal and sometimes 80s type of Melodic Rock sound. It sounds pretty good, not sensational, although songs like “Fallen hero”, “Never surrender”, “Power and glory” and “Ride like the wind” are quite memorable Melodic Metal songs. Lyrically and also musically very cliché of course, but still worth checking out if you like EDGUY, DESTYNATION, ALTARIA, AXXIS and HELLOWEEN… (by the way, the band is a little heavy on the keyboards, which I know some might turn down, as they want to hear more Guitar…)

(Points: 8.3 out of 10)

CRESCENT SHIELD ‘THE LAST OF MY KIND’ (CRUZ DEL SUR MUSIC)

CRESCENT SHIELD started in 2000 as a project, but apparantly with the members' main bands put on hold at the moment, this might turn out to be a band after all. The band features Michael Grant (ONWARD, NEW EDEN, LEGEND MAKER...) on vocals, Dan DeLucie (DESTINY'S END, NEW EDEN) on guitar, Melanie Sisneros (NEW EDEN, SINERGY...) on bass and Craig Anderson (SEVEN WITCHES...) on drums. Anyone familiar with these bands know what to expect here, because CRESCENT SHIELD is all about classic 80s Melodic US Power Metal. So you get soaring vocals, high-pitched and in classic LEATHERWOLF/HEIR APPARENT/FATES WARNING/LIZZY BORDEN/JAG PANZER style, pure 80s flashy guitarwork, riffs straight out of the 'MAIDEN done by American 80s Power Metalbands' book and mostly an uptempo rhythm section (pumping bass and upbeat drumming), with still catchy melodic choruses. This is what True Metal was and still is all about. Fans of mentioned bands should get this release asap! More info at www.crescentshield.com

DIRTY RHYTHM ‘NEVER CLEANED UP’ (SUNCITY RECORDS)

Mini-CD actually, as only 6 tracks and a video are included on the CD of the US band DIRTY RHYTHM, which was their 2nd release. Their debut was released around 1990, produced by PAUL DEAN of LOVERBOY. However, this new CD release contains unreleased material, because the songs were never released before and recorded some time after the debut release. Eventually the band split up, but this is a nice re-introduction to some of their unreleased material, which was good typical early 90s groovy hardrock a la SKID ROW/TESLA, nothing fancy though. Their debut was much better, more uptempo melodic hardrock, such as can be heard and seen in the awesome pure 80s videoclip “Feel the fire” from their debut, which is included here as a bonus. Available through: http://www.suncityrecords.com

(Points: 7.8 out of 10)

DANIEL MACMASTER ‘ROCK BONHAM AND THE LONG ROAD BACK’ (SUNCITY RECORDS)

DANIEL MACMASTER is the ex-BONHAM singer with a solo-release that includes material he recorded between 1991 and 2003, including 4 unreleased BONHAM demos. Daniel is a great singer sounding like a cross between the TESLA singer and the ex-VICTORY singer FERNANDO GARCIA, while the music is early 90s American Mainstream Melodic Rock, starting with the fantastic ballad “Bleeding hearts collide”. This is maybe a slight complaint, because there are many ballads on the CD, but happily they are pretty good, but some more rockers wouldn't hurt, because the rock hard and are very groovy with a BONHAM/ZEPPELIN touch. Without a doubt, a high quality CD, although keep in mind these are demos and the sound quality is ok... Available through: http://www.suncityrecords.com

XOCH ‘POPCORE DU JOUR’ (RIPER MOJO MUSIC/HILARITY MUSIC)

Another female fronted band and this time a very good one. XOCH is not a new band, because they have released a few records before, even holding the weird fact they were one of the last bands to release a CD on the now defunct NOW AND THEN RECORDS, which once was THE AOR label that brought light at the end of the tunnel in the mid 1990s, but somehow that release ‘The one’ never made it to our desk. Anyway, XOCH are an American band and their new release 'Popcore du jour' is a gem if we speak in typical modern day female fronted melodic poprock. The included songs are very catchy, rock hard and show there are so many better ff rockacts out there than the big ones like KELLY CLARCKSON and EVANESCENCE. Just check out the catchy uptempo rockers “Anything” and “Crazy over you”. Only pity is that the CD just counts 7 songs making up only 25 minutes of music, but from start to finish it is very impressive stuff we get to hear. XOCH by the way is the name of the female lead singer, who has a band formed around her. Check it out for yourself at: http://www.xoch.com  and e-mail at: xochmusic@yahoo.com

DICE ‘WITHIN VS. WITHOUT’ (SCENE RECORDS)

Legendary Progrockband DICE return with a typical DICE album. For almost 30 years this band has been releasing records frequently and the style has always been the same. Also 'Within vs. without' is filled with nice calmer relaxing progrock, with many many keys, in a typical classic 70s ELOY/YES/IQ style... It is very good and if you're a fan of this style you will certainly enjoy the 60 minutes the 8 included songs are making up this CD. With a total of 12 CDs and a DVD, the DICE fans can add another strong DICE album to their collection. More info at www.dice-band.de  and www.scene-records.de

(Points: 8.2 out of 10)

TOROK ‘ADDICTION OF FOOLS’ (SUGAR SHACK RECORDS)

The American band TOROK returns with a new CD, which indeed like the bio says sounds like a mix between heavy 70s guitar riffs a la SABBATH/ZEPPELIN and 80s groovy Hair Metal. In the end it reminds me a lot of WIDOWMAKER, the band of DEE SNIDER after the first TWISTED SISTER breakup, so big heavy groovy riff orientated but still melodic hardrock. The band’s singer Bryan Erickson has a strong 80s Metal voice and the 10 included songs reflect a great own style. The band is formed around guitarist MICHAEL TOROK, who perfectly plays his guitar in classic 70s and 80s style. For an independent CD, this has a good sound and is one to own if you’re a fan of classic Metal! More info at: http://www.torokmusic.com  and e-mail at: torok@torokmusic.com

(Points: 8.2 out of 10)

GREEN RIVER ORDINANCE ‘THE BEAUTY OF LETTING GO’ (FOR MONA MUSIC)

The borders between Emo and Melodic Rock seem to vanish more and more, because GREEN RIVER ORDINANCE is yet another strong new band playing catchy modern melodic rock. Opener “Breath of life” is a very catchy uptempo Melodic Rocker that even reminds me a bit during the chorus of 80s acts like GLASS TIGER, 1927, ICEHOUSE and even BYSTANDER! Despite a few (semi) ballads, the band is at their best during the uptempo rockers. Most of the songs feature very impressive catchy super melodic choruses and although they are friendly for the melodic rockfan, GREEN RIVER ORDINANCE have a real updated sound, which is best comparable to a band like CASTING CROWNS. More info at: http://www.greenriverordinance.com

(Points: 8.3 out of 10)

UNDERRIDE ‘INSANITYLAND’ (INDEPENDENT)

Impressive independent CD, which musically is pure 80s US Hair Metal with a touch of US Metal, sort of mixing LIZZY BORDEN and TWISTED SISTER and it sounds awesome. 5 songs are on the new record of this Washington US State based band. They all sound pretty good and if it was 1985 they would have been releasing their record on a major label for sure. This is 80s Metal at it’s best, check out more info at: http://www.underride.net  and http://www.myspace.com/underrideseattle

(Points: 8.4 out of 10)

EXCRUCIATION ‘ANGELS TO SOME, DEMONS TO OTHERS’ (NON STOP MUSIC RECORDS)

Quality release, but sadly musically not that interesting, as it mixes Doom with extreme vocalwork, sort of Thrash Metal going slow, ending up sounding like CELTIC FROST meets SAVATAGE meets BLACK SABBATH. Not bad at all, but the vocals are at one time a bit annoying. EXCRUCIATION by the way is coming out of Switzerland, were active between 1984 and 1991 and are now back with a new CD, produced by JIM MORRIS. All together a quality release for sure, but not much melodies can be found here, as it is more going into a Doom/Death/Dark-Metal style. More info at: http://www.excruciation.net

(Points: 7.6 out of 10)

ANGUISH FORCE ‘DEFENDERS UNITED’ (ANGUISH FORCE RECORDS)

Actually only one new song included on the new mini-CD of the Italian band ANGUISH FORCE, which is the titletrack “Defenders united”, a True Metal song a la MANOWAR/PRIEST. The other 3 songs are PRIEST cover “Breaking the law” and the 2 live versions of older ANGUISH FORCE songs. More info at: http://www.defendersclub.it  and http://www.anguishforce.com

(Points: 7.8 out of 10)

EVER SINCE ‘BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL’ (QUAM LIBET RECORDS/ NON STOP MUSIC RECORDS)

Founded in 1998, this Swiss band makes a good mix of Gothic, Dark and Power Metal, with various vocalstyles, such as the clean female vocals in typical Goth style, the dark male growling and the 80s male sort of clean Gothic Rock way of singing. It took the band 4 years to complete their new album, but the result is a nice original sounding album, comparable to a THERION, TRAIL OF TEARS or THEATRE OF TRAGEDY. 12 tracks are on the CD, which by the way has a huge sound. The sound is typical of today, with distorted guitars and strong melodies mixed into the mostly uptempo Metal based style. An album that has been released on a smaller label, but could have easily been on a bigger label. More info at: http://www.eversince.net

(Points: 8.3 out of 10)

ANTI-HERO ‘UNPRETTY’ (HER RECORDS)

Canadian band with a female singer called ROSE PERRY, who also plays guitar and writes most of the songs. Musically ANTI-HERO is playing good straight-forward Rock and Roll with some elements of Gothic Rock, Punkrock and Heavy Metal mixed here and there, but most of the time sounds like a rougher version of JOAN JETT. 10 songs are included and besides this CD, also enclosed is a DVD, which features a videoclip and backstage footage of ANTI-HERO. The sound of the band is modern enough to be played on the radio, aired on TV, so this could well be the next Canadian band to have a breakthrough. It is definitely rawer and more Rock and Roll than most of the other female fronted acts. Check it out for yourself at: http://www.anti-hero.ca  and e-mail at: antiheroband@hotmail.com

(Points: 8.1 out of 10)

JUST PASSING THRU ’REASON‘ (INDEPENDENT)

Typical American modern Metal is what to expect when putting up the CD of the New Jersey band JUST PASSING THRU, sort of like PAPA ROACH. However, that is the case when putting on the first song, because track 2 “Fly” goes more into a fun uptempo melodic rockstyle, in late 80s spirit. Not that this is suddenly a classic melodic rock release, but the rest of the 80s definitely has a stronger 80s melodic rock approach, with here and there some very strong melodic choruses such as in the midtempo ballad “Back away” that even recalls memories of good old NELSON with those harmonyvocals (also INNUENDO comes to mind here). Also some similarities to HAREM SCAREM are notable, such as in the closing titletrack. One way or the other, melodic rockfans of the old 80s style might like this JUST PASSING THRU. If you’re starting to become interested, then go to: http://www.justpassingthru.net

(Points: 8.0 out of 10)

SYBILLA ‘THE INVISIBLE SANDGLASS’ (EASY REPLICA)

Apparantly this Italian band is mixing the best of all styles we review (Goth, Glam, AOR, Prog and Melodic Hardrock/Metal) on their first CD. The band SYBILLA is actually playing catchy Melodic Hardrock in the end, which reminds me a lot of VAIN and BLACK AND BLUE. Without a doubt, their CD is a strong impressive CD, which for an independent CD has a big sound/production as well. Songs like the uptempo melodic rockers “Burning”, “God TV” (80s keys, very fun song), “Gimme more rockin” and the ballad “INFILA” are also quite catchy and memorable, with strong melodic choruses and flashy guitarwork (even a bit WIG WAM style), so in the end I can really recommend this Italian band. Fans of THE POODLES, BROTHER FIRETRIBE, REFLEXION, LOVEX, WIG WAM, etc. might like this band a lot! More info at: http://www.sybillaonline.it  and e-mail at: rocksoldier@tin.it

AGNES 'WHEN THE NIGHT FALLS' (SONY BMG FINLAND)

The latest sensation in female AOR world is AGNES and she might be the first female rocker to indeed release a true AOR gem since the days of TONE NORUM, ERIKA and WITNESS ended. Of course we have had some the past few years, COASTLINE, ALYSON AVENUE and ROBIN BECK's new one for example, but AGNES is the first female AOR performer on a major label in a long time. With a huge production, a very 80s approach and a lot of help from musicians/outside songwriters like Joey Tempest (EUROPE), Mr. Lordi (LORDI), Kimmo Blom (URBAN TALE), Luke Morley (THUNDER), Tony Kakko (SONATA ARCTICA) and a bunch others, this is an album to have a.s.a.p. if you are waiting for a release to be in the exact same style as the first couple of TONE NORUM and ROBIN BECK albums. 11 songs are included and with a nice variation in tempo, going from midtempo to uptempo and a few (semi) ballads in between, this CD has a lot to offer. Now back to AGNES herself, because she is coming out of Finland and almost won the Finnish Idols, so therefore she now releases her debut CD on SONY BMG. There are quite a few highlights on the record, such as "When the Night Falls", "I Thought We Were Lovers" (fantastic semi AOR rocker written by URBAN TALE's KIMMO BLOM, huge hit in Finland during 2006 and reminding a lot of the first TONE NORUM), "Change (written by EUROPE's JOEY TEMPEST) and the superb 80s AOR rocker "Danger in Love" (written by MR. LORDI, this song is just pure TANE CAIN/WITNESS big 80s sounding). All together the perfect album for anyone longing back to big 80s AOR/Melodic Rock and sort of the female fronted version of BROTHER FIRETRIBE, that other sensational Finnish major label release in 2006. More info at: www.agnes.fi

(Points: 8.7 out of 10)

REFLEXION 'OUT OF THE DARK' (CHILD IN DARK LABEL)

Here we have yet another sensational Finnish release. It seems like 2006 was the absolute top year for Finnish music, as we have seen so many superb releases, with BROTHER FIRETRIBE, AGNES, SUNRISE AVENUE, CARMEN GRAY, LOVEX as a few of the many highlights. REFLEXION was another act with a lovely 2006 release. Their album 'Out of the dark' might not be original, as it is very close to HIM, LOVEX etc. but their modern catchy Melodic Rock sounds just perfect. Uptempo melo rockers like "Army of Broken Hearts', "Crashing Down", "Undying Dreams", "Feeble Soul" and "Rainheart" are richly filled with catchy hooks and memorable choruses. Although the band might be seen as HIM clone, I can inform you this debut record of REFLEXION is much better than the last HIM record and they are much more going into our beloved AOR/Melodic Rockstyle on most of the songs. More info at: www.reflexionmusic.com

(Points: 8.7 out of 10)

FORTUNE 'FORTUNE/STORYLINE' (FORTUNE MUSIC)

FORTUNE is a bandname which has been used frequently in the hardrock/metal/aor world. Of course the 1985 LA based FORTUNE was the absolute best, as their one and only record belongs to the best release ever done in AOR history. Nevertheless, the 2 Swedish FORTUNE named bands as well as this Boston based FORTUNE also all delivered high quality releases, strangely enough all in a similar sounding style, mixing the best of AOR, Melodic Hardrock and Progressive Rock. The BOSTON based FORTUNE is sort of making a comeback. They released 2 albums during the 1990s, which are available through their website. And they are also working on a new CD, which should be released during 2007. the 1993 debut CD contains 2 bonustracks ("Don't lose faith" and "The wolf will survive") and was their best effort, as this was a fantastic AOR/Melodic Rockalbum with some beautiful hooks and catchy choruses in songs like "Straight Ahead", "When the Time Is Right", "Only You", "Never Felt So in Love" and "See I'm Not the Same". The follow-up 'Storyline' from 1996 was less aor/melodic rock, more proggy and way more experimental, such as the Reggae influenced "Jamaica" and the Latin based "Latin Thing". Hopefully the new record will go back in style to their wonderful debut. Check out this FORTUNE at: http://www.fortune-music.com/  and www.myspace.com/fortuneboston

BOBBY FRISS 'LIVE AT MILWAUKEE SUMMERFEST DVD' (INDEPENDENT)

Many years ago we once reviewed a CD of the BOBBY FRISS BAND, which was released on the defunct LONG ISLAND RECORDS somewhere in the mid 90s. Now all of a sudden a DVD pops up, which features a recently performed concert of Bobby, along with his band, which besides Bobby on guitar/vocals also features JERRY RIGGS on guitar/vocals. Jerry was once a member of the PAT TRAVERS BAND, but also released a rare early 80s AOR record under the RIGGS moniker. Anyway, he is now part of the BOBBY FRISS BAND. In the area where the BOBBY FRISS BAND is settled, which is the Milwaukee (remember BAD BOY!) area in the USA, they are quite popular and this DVD is the living proof of that fact. Nicely shot and with a good sound, the BOBBY FRISS BAND of 2006 doesn't sound like the old AOR sounding BOBBY FRISS BAND, because nowadays they move into a Southern Rockstyle a la MOLLY HATCHET, BLACKFOOT, DOC HOLLIDAY... And they do that quite well. Better check it out for yourself at: www.bobbyfriss.com

HAREM SCAREM 'HUMAN NATURE' (NL DISTRIBUTION/ARTISTWORXX)

The Canadian melodic rockers of HAREM SCAREM are back with a new CD, which might well be their best effort since their first 2 classics from the early 90s. The band finally goes back in style to the first couple of albums, so big time harmonyvocals are being put into the catchy hooks and memorable choruses. 11 new songs are included and they are ranging from uptempo to midtempo to ballads, all very much sounding like if it was the album between the debut CD and 'Mood swings', with an updated approach. Especially the start of the album is stunning, with brilliant songs like "Human Nature", "Next Time Around" and "Caught Up In Your World". Although the last couple of HAREM SCAREM albums were good, this new CD 'Human nature' beats any of their albums since 'Mood swings from 1993! More info at: http://www.haremscarem.com

FRANK DEROUBAIX ‘F.D.’ (MILKHOUSE RECORDS)

Guitarist FRANK DEROUBAIX of the Belgian Melodic Hardrockband 2ND SKIN released a solo-CD, on which he has done everything on his own. Musically it is an instrumental release with Frank at his best on the guitar, because some of the rest is programmed. Anyway, the guitar style is very impressive, with strong classical themes and a sort of classic rock/melodic rock approach. Nice one to check out for the guitarfreaks among us. NICK MAY ‘WHIMWISE’ (AMP RECORDS)

Multi-instrumentalist NICK MAY became known as a member of the band THE ENID. Now solo he has released his first album titled ‘Whimwise’, which musically contains Symphonic Bombastic Progrock, very much in the style of EMERSON LAKE and PALMER (ELP) and YES. Nick did a great job, making it sound huge and very much as if it was recorded in the 1970s, yet of course sounding up-to-date. Nick is also a member of progrockbands JADIS and QUASAR, but with this release he goes into the WAKEMAN/EMERSON area, which he does quite well. NO RULES ‘WHERE WE BELONG’ (RECORD HEAVEN)

Another strong new band from Sweden. NO RULES were formed in 2004 and with ‘Where we belong’ they release a very diverse heavier Progrock/metalalbum which sounds like a cross between SAGA, THRESHOLD and ARENA. 12 songs are included and together with a huge sound, this NO RULES also delivers high quality musicianship. They are a bit more straight-forward than the standard progband, so no lengthy songs here, but a more direct approach with even some very strong melodic choruses. This band fits somewhere between melodic rock and progressive rock, with as best comparable band ARENA and a heavier version of A.C.T. Their first CD ‘Where we belong’ sounds very impressive and for more info go to: http://www.norulesmusic.com  and listen to their songs at: http://www.myspace.com/norulesmusic

ORESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE ‘IT’S ALL ABOUT DELAY’ (TRANSUBSTANS RECORDS/RECORD HEAVEN)

Not 1, but the project of ORESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE is spread on 2 separate CDs, which musically are a keyboard-mellotron-synthesizer based instrumental journey through space like MIKE OLDFIELD, TANGERINE DREAM, JEAN MICHAEL JARRE, RICK WAKEMAN did on so many records throughout the 1970s. Space Rock, because there are also many influences of your typical progressive rock to be found here, so it goes a little bit further. For 2 hours long you find yourself in another dimension called the ORESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE! More info at: http://www.recordheaven.net

ELIXIR ‘LIVE’ (MAJESTIC ROCK RECORDS)

After a bunch of re-issues and re-releases, the band ELIXIR now released a live CD, which sounds very good. Recorded very recently, this CD shows the band sounds quite good live, like a really classic NWOBHM band in the SAXON spirit. Most of their oldies and some new tunes can be heard during this live performance. Both vocally and twin-guitarwork are sounding very impressive, so anyone wondering if one of those old NWOBHM bands can still do well, better check out this live-CD of ELIXIR.

LOST OCEAN ‘LOST OCEAN’ (CREDENTIAL RECORDINGS)

Californian band with a sound if they were situated in the UK, akin dangerously close to KEANE, KANE, COLDPLAY, etc. The comparisons to SUPERTRAMP I found a bit over the top, as LOST OCEAN just sounds like a typical modern British Rockband. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but somehow their material sounds a bit safe here and there, just aiming for the radio stations in Europe that go nuts over this kind of material. Happily, LOST OCEAN throws in some nice melodies here and there, but on the other hand I think they are too much a COLDPLAY/KANE clone, which then again might certainly give them some exposure… More info at: http://www.lostocean.com

FUTURE OF FORESTRY ‘TWILIGHT’ (CREDENTIAL RECORDINGS)

The latest UK sensation in the Pop/Rock scene comes out of San Diego, which of course is an American city. However, FUTURE OF FORESTRY are sounding very British, yet with the melodies of an American band, something like a COPELAND and that makes them sound very impressive. The opening tune of their first record ‘Twilight’ is the very catchy “Open wide” that sets the record straight here as being a song that should give this new band a big break worldwide. The CD continues more or less in this style, which is a mostly midtempo based soft pop/rock sound in British tradition (MUSE/KEANE) with superstrong American Melodic Rock melodies. If they are really lucky this FUTURE OF FORESTRY could easily become huge, but in this fast times it really is being at the right place at the right time with the right people promoting your record and the best way to do that is go public as much as possible. For me, they are much better than a KEANE, COLDPLAY or whatever they are called. Check out for yourself their sites at: www.myspace.com/futureofforestry  and www.futureofforestry.com

ABSENCE ‘XXX/GIFT’ (INDEPENDENT)

Dutch band with a sort of Classic Rock meets Prog meets Bluesrocksound, kinda like GOLDEN EARRING, yet different of course. They sent me 2 CDs they released. Musically it sounds good, but vocally not strong enough to make a real big impression. Nevertheless, good to see another fine rockband from Holland. More info at: http://www.hardhatarea.com/absence

JUPITER 6 ‘BACK FROM MARS’ (RETROACTIVE RECORDS)

American band with a sound that in the bio is compared to the newer acts like SHE WANTS REVENGE, THE STROKES, THE KILLERS, etc. but actually sounds like DAVID BOWIE doing ALICE COOPER covers with T-REX and THE BEATLES backing them up! So they sound like a modern version of ENUFF’Z’NUFF, taking a drink with KING’S X, yes very Psychedelic kinda Heavy Rock and it sounds pretty good for what it is and could attract a lot of people. Lead singer PETER BRAUN sounds so much like DAVID BOWIE you would almost believe Mr. Bowie did a Rockalbum after 30 years or something, but this is really a new band called JUPITER 6. BRIDE ‘SKIN FOR SKIN’ (RETROACTIVE RECORDS)

The American Christian Hardrockband BRIDE released many records during their 20 years of existence and now in 2006 they reunited in original line-up and released this new CD titled ‘Skin for skin’. Starting in the 80s as a sort of GREAT WHITE/TESLA type of Hardrockband, through the 90s they changed their sound to a heavier almost Industrial Metalsound. Now in 2006 the band sounds like a typical American band with heavy fat groovy Metal riffs and some aggressive vocalwork, but happily owing more to US Power Metal than the Nu-Metal. Imagine MEGADETH meets PANTERA meets PRIEST with Christian lyrics, then you’re close to BRIDE’s current sound, very heavy and groovy, dark and modern, but nevertheless sometimes also melodic enough for the Power Metal fan. EMOTION ‘EMOTION’ (RETROACTIVE RECORDS)

Formed in the late 80s, the Swedish band EMOTION quickly built a reputation throughout Eastern Europe, with many performances in Poland, Bosnia, Romania and Ukraine, but also in Sweden they had some success. However, it took them until the mid 90s for an official CD release, which was the ‘Taste of grapes’ release in 1997 on the LONG ISLAND RECORDS distributed MASSIVE MUSIC label. I remember reviewing the record, which is now 10 years ago (wow, time goes by very fast!!!) and was not that impressed. The band released another record a year later, before disappearing until now, because RETROACTIVE RECORDS re-released the ‘Taste of grapes’ album in the USA, with as bonus, the songs from their 2nd album ‘Tip to toe’, so you have here almost all the songs EMOTION recorded throughout the 1990s. Musically it is a nice collection of progressive melodic rock, but somehow it goes in one ear and out the other, mainly due to the fact the vocals are a bit weaker. Nevertheless, nice to check out if you like bands such as AXXIS, DOMAIN, ANGEL HEART, TRANSIT… More info at: http://www.retroactiverecords.net  and e-mail at: brutalplanet@gmail.com

THE SEVENTH POWER ‘THE SEVENTH POWER’ (RETROACTIVE RECORDS)

Project formed by vocalist Bill Menchen (guitarist for legendary Christian Rockbands like TITANIC and FINAL AXE) and drummer ROBERT SWEET. The CD they released sounds quite modern and although compared to BLACK SABBATH/OZZY, which quite true here and there, it sounds a bit like mid 90s Progressive Metal to me. When we started our magazine I received many bands with demos that sounded like this style, so you could see this release as a sort of leap in time of 10 years back. Not saying it is bad, but it all sounds a bit dated somehow, especially compared to the hundreds of Metal releases done very month, many with huge productions, this THE SEVENTH POWER sounds a bit empty here and there. The guitarsound is standard and does not feature outstanding riffs or solo’s, while most of the songs go in a similar mood. Only interesting if you’re a die-hard OZZY/SABBATH fan! CORIN & EDMAN ‘ROC DE LIGHT’ (INDEPENDENT)

So we had the AOR project of FREDERICK SLAMA the past few years, but here is another pure Westcoast-AOR album in the shape of CORIN & EDMAN, which musically is pure early 80s CHICAGO, AIRPLAY, JAY GRAYDON, TOTO, DAVID ROBERTS… This is basically the most pure Westcoast album at the moment. CORIN & EDMAN is build up around keyboardplayer CORIN and lead singer GORAN EDMAN. Both started in the 80s, but CORIN more or less never recorded something, in contrast to Goran. Goran is of course one of the best Swedish vocalists ever, with many albums he sang on, most notable MALMSTEEN, MADISON, JOHN NORUM and STREET TALK, but quite a lot more actually. Mostly in the AOR/Melodic Rock area, his voice is one you will instantly love if you’re into the clean melodic AOR type of vocals. Most of the songs on this CORIN & EDMAN CD by the way were written between 1987 and 1997, so therefore the big 80s approach. It might not be too heavy and certainly doesn’t rock, but if you’re into Westcoast-AOR this is something you will absolutely love. 10 songs are included and although most of the songs are slow/(semi) ballad orientated, the melodies are beautiful. Take TOTO, mix it with 80s CHICAGO and add the wonderful vocals of Goran, well then you will have CORIN & EDMAN. The beautiful song “Good luck charm” is the standout track here. LIGHTSPEED ‘WAVES’ (MAJESTIC ROCK RECORDS)

In the 1990s this 1977 formed Canadian band was reviewed by us. They played a strong 80s influenced Symphonic Pomprockstyle a la ASIA, releasing a couple records and now many years later they return with a new CD titled ‘Waves’ on the UK label MAJESTIC ROCK RECORDS. Musically not much has changed, because opener “Peak fires” is a very good uptempo Symphonic Pomprocker. Happily lead singer JOHN PERSICHINI is still in the line-up, because he has a great voice. Another member is bassist Rod Chappell, who is an ex-member of the legendary Pomprockband ZON and most important member is TERRY CRAWFORD, a multi-instrumentalist who also recorded a solo-album in the time LIGHTSPEED was inactive (late 90s-2006).Although the album starts with an uptempo rocker with many keys, the rest of the album is more progrock related, with acoustic guitars, but always with strong melodies and sounding a bit like JOHN WETTON. Also some AOR influences can be heard here and there, so the CD is quite diverse, but one to own if you like for example GTR, ASIA, 3, GPS, IT BITES, GOWAN and such 80s kinda mix of AOR, Prog, Sympho, Pop and Pomprock. Standout track is definitely “Waves of emotion”, a 4-piece 20 minutes counting epic tune that reveals all their AOR, Prog, Sympho and Pompinfluences. Also closing track “Fly away” is very impressive as being a DENNIS DEYOUNG/TOMMY SHAW inspired STYXish AOR tune. Definitely an album that needs to be checked if you like any of the mentioned bands! RICHARD ANDERSSON’S SPACE ODYSSEY ‘TEARS OF THE SUN’ (REGAIN RECORDS)

3rd album of keyboardplayer RICHARD ANDERSSON’s SPACE ODYSSEY and just maybe their best release. The album is filled with superb melodic hardrock with minor Neo-Classical influences, unlike the earlier records. The style is akin to very early EUROPE/RAINBOW/WHITESNAKE/MALMSTEEN 80s, filled with catchy choruses and superb vocalwork of new singer DAVID FREMBERG from ANDROMEDA who replaces PATRICK JOHANSSON (ASTRAL DOORS, WUTHERING HEIGHTS), while keyboardplayer RICHARD ANDERSSON is still the man behind this project. 9 songs are included and from the first few seconds of “The Bohemian Werewolf” until the last piece “Bloodspill” it is a non-stop ride through high-class Classic Melodic Hardrock with lovely vocalwork, beautiful melodies coming out of the guitar and keyboard. One of the highlights for me is “Obsession”, but any song here is a highlight. More info at: http://www.anderssonmusic.com/

SPLIT VISION ‘SPLIT VISION’ (INDEPENDENT)

Already 4 demos recorded and now with a sort of real new CD, released independent, the Swedish band SPLIT VISION is very keen on 80s melodies and keys as if it was still 1987. The music sounds very poppy, which is a pity, because their singer, catchy hooks and melodic choruses are very AOR based. With a song like “Julia (Don’t cry)” they would easily win the Eurovision Song Contest, because this is a damn catchy poprocker in best 80s spirit. The other songs go in a much poppier environment, but for sure this band is radio-ready and any hit out of these tunes would not be a surprise as it all sounds very professional. Maybe a bit too poppy sometimes, but definitely high quality is what to expect from SPLIT VISION. More info at: http://www.splitvisionmusic.com

KORITNI ‘LADY LUCK’ (BAD REPUTATION RECORDS)

Aussie band formed by ex-GREEN DOLLAR COLOUR singer LEX KORITNI, with a CD release that was produced by Lex himself, but mixed by MIKE FRASER (VAN HALEN, AC/DC, METALLICA, AEROSMITH, MOTLEY CRUE) and mastered by GEORGE MARINO (GUNS’N’ROSES, METALLICA, AC/DC, MANOWAR and a million others!). Basically the sound is perfect and with Lex’s strong typical Aussie vocals (a la JIMMY BARNES/BRIAN JOHNSON/BON SCOTT), this is a must-have release if you like real classic Rock and Roll a la AC/DC, COLD CHISEL, JIMMY BARNES, ROSE TATTOO, KINGS OF THE SUN, THE ANSWER, WOLFMOTHER… Huge sound and 12 strong songs will please any fan of all-original Classic Rock and Roll! More info at: http://www.koritni.com

GREYLEVEL ‘OPUS ONE’ (PROGROCK RECORDS)

3-piece Progrockband from Canada. Sounding like RUSH meets MOSTLY AUTUMN/PINK FLOYD, this band features DEREK BARBER on vocals, guitars, keys and bass, RICHARD SHUKIN on guitar and ESTHER BARBER on vocals, keys. However, Derek is the main member here, also writing all the songs. Most of the material was recorded in 2005 and 2006 and especially if you like PORCUPINE TREE, OZRIC TENTACLES, PINK FLOYD and a bit RUSH/MOSTLY AUTUMN this is a CD to check out. No uptempo rockers, but mostly a calmer laid-back sound, very dark and slightly modern progressive rock, very much like the CYCLOPS RECORDS releases, but this one is on the US label PROGROCK RECORDS. Check it out for yourself at: http://www.greylevel.com

D.A.C. CFH ‘REBEL MEETS REBEL’ (LOCOMOTIVE MUSIC)

Not much info on this release, but it concerns here a project featuring the members of PANTERA, such as VINNIE PAUL and the late DIMEBAG BARELL. Musically it is a sort of Southern Metal style, very different from PANTERA, more something you would hear when entering a bar in the Midwest of the USA, where smoking, drinking and booze go hand in hand every night. Somehow it also has a slight THIN LIZZY touch, but vocally it is actually a bit average. The sound also reminds me a lot of THE LIZARDS, so by now you should know what to expect from the last recordings DIMEBAG BARELL of PANTERA ever made…
