TIGERS SPLIT SATURDAY GAMES, BRIAN STEELE MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

In the morning game the Tigers started where they left off from Friday night. Dustin Hayward made a spectacular end to end rush capped off with a laser to the short side of the York Toros goaltender. The penalty filled affair saw the Tigers lose 2 of there defencemen, Sean Corvetti and David Johnston leaving them with a "short" bench for the remainder of the game (Tigers were already short 1 other defenceman to start the game leaving them with only 1 regular). Riley Skyba and Dustin Hayward were moved from their regular forward positions to the "D" for almost the entire game. They both called on previous experience as defenders and never looked out of place. Skyba showed outstanding patience, quarterbacking the play from the defensive end and clearing the zone effectively.

After the Toros scored twice to put them in the lead the Tigers came back and scored 3 unanswered goals thanks to Adam Hiscock with 2 and Jace McGrath who was rewarded with a goal for his hustle and determination. Hiscock should also be commended for his ability to drive to the net and capitalize on opportunities.

Despite having lost several players during the game the Tigers actually seemed stronger than their opponents in the 3rd period. The players dedication and effort to dryland training is already paying early dividends.

In the evening Saturday game the Tigers got off to a slow start and the Vaughan Panthers jumped all over them. Despite a late rally in the 3rd period with goals by Ryan Johnston and David Canavan, the Tigers were not able to overcome the 5 goal Panther lead.

The Tigers now prepare for their season opener against the Mississauga Terriers on Monday at Erin Mills.

TIGERS CLAW BACK TO TIE GAME 1, BRIAN STEELE MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

The Tigers 1st goal of the game was scored by Ryan Johnston who out hustled the entire Royals defense and crashed the net, resulting in the puck ricocheting off himself and several Royals defenders. Unfortunately the Royals responded with a goal of their own in less then 1 minute. Tiger goaltender Connor Clark was outstanding from the 1st drop of the the puck and kept the Tigers in the game through the 1st period.

After trading goals in the second period the Toronto Royals scored two quick ones to take a 3-1 lead. The Tigers faced numerous shorthanded situations but persevered and held off the Royals power-play which set the tone for the comeback. On the power play Mark Shiozaki fired a low cannon from the right point and scored to make the score 3-2.

With the momentum now swinging in favour of the Tigers they mounted a ruthless attack on the Royals. A wild scramble in front of the net ended up with a masterful wrap around by Nick Wallace. This completed the well deserved comeback and they now look forward to their next game against the York Toros on Saturday @ 12:10pm at the Vaughan Sports Village.
