MAY 6, 2007…TIGERS SHOW THEIR POTENTIAL THIS WEEKEND This weekends tournament, although ending with a disappointing loss in overtime, showcased the talent of the 07/08 Streetsville Tigers Minor Midget team. With some added scoring power and a bolstered defense, the Tigers will be a team to be reckoned with this season. It’s hard not to forget that we are only in May, although the Tigers supporters are in mid-season form…bring on the wet slushy snow, toe numbing ice rinks and dry, buttery popcorn…NOT!!!! So back to hockey, the Tigers were defeated in the final by the Kingston Beast in a shoot-out after there was no scoring in the 5 minute overtime period. Probably the most disappointing part was that they had a 3-0 lead midway through the 2nd period only to have the Beast come back and score 3 unanswered goals. Ryan (Sudden Death) Johnston got the Tigers scoring, followed by Sean Corvetti and Jace McGrath. The Beast scored their 1st goal of the game in the 2nd period on the power play with 3:46 left. After a break while the zamboni flooded the ice, both teams returned to face-off for the final 15 minutes. It took the Beast only 16 seconds to make it 3-2 as they surged forward right from the drop of the puck, invaded the Tigers territory and dominated their opponents. The period continued with the Beast maintaining their momentum but the Tigers holding on by a thread, in part thanks to Conor Clark. With the Tigers defense pinching the puck bounced out of the Beast zone to one of their forwards. Mark Shiozaki fired up the after burners and caught up to the streaking forward, diving adeptly at the puck and knocking it out of harms way…But wait, there is a whistle…is someone hurt?...did they call a penalty?…no wait…they have called a Penalty Shot…WHAT???!!! On the ensuing penalty shot, the Beast forward fired a shot that was partially blocked by Conor Clark but it entered the net to tie the score 3-3. As you are by now the Tigers lost in a shootout to finished 2nd in the Lakeshore Thunder International Classic. In the semi-final game the Tigers defeated the Del Raiders 5-1. The 1st period saw the Tigers receive a wake-up call at 10:51 as the Del Raiders scored the 1st goal of the game. They quickly responded just over 30 seconds later as Davis Stan scored when Kyle Morrison setup Mark Shiozaki for a shot, leaving a rebound for Davis to put away. 4 minutes later Derrick Johnson passed to Morrison who spotted a streaking Dustin Hayward who finished it by firing one into the net. In the 2nd period Kyle Morrison continued his torrid scoring pace, jamming in a rebound off a high shot from David Johnston. Matt Emanuele was steady in net for the Tigers making some big saves while the Tigers were shorthanded. Ryan Johnston rounded out the scoring in the 2nd with a breakaway goal while the Tigers were shorthanded. Davis Stan scored in the 3rd period to complete the scoring, making it a 5-1 and advancing them to the finals.
