January 19, 2008...TIGERS CLIP THE JETS WINGS IN A BARN BURNER

A much anticipated meeting between the league leading Mississauga Jets and our Tigers ended in dramatic fashion with Ray Cadeau scoring the winning goal with only 16 seconds left in the game. Up until that point it was a quick paced and hard-hitting affair with both teams having several opportunites to pull away from each other however pride and determination prevented that from happening. The Tigers played a very disciplined game and stayed away from penalties that have haunted them for most of the season.

In the 1st period Justin Iskra opened the scoring by banging in a rebound after Ryan Johnston's inital shot was stopped by the Jets goaltender, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Jets came back and tied the game 1-1 with the Tigers 2 men short with the momentum swinigng slightly in their favour. Our opponents displayed some of the team work that has allowed them to be so successful by executing breakouts with precision and displaying a tenacious work ethic each shift. This actually seemed to bring the Tigers players to a new level as they also exhibited good execution and consistent energy on each play which has been lacking at times during the season.

In period 2, Kyle Morrison scored on the power play on a rebound from a shot by David Johnston. The key to the play was the hustle of David Gallo who hustled into the corner, beating the Jets player to the puck. With that goal the Tigers regained the lead 2-1 but the Jets showed why they lead the league as they didn't panic, stuck to their game plan and were rewarded with a tieing goal just minutes after the Tigers tok the lead.

With thoughts of the Jets surging ahead weighing heavily on the minds of the Tigers supporters, Mark Shiozaki chipped the puck up the right side to Kyle Morrison who fed a perfect cross ice pass to a charging Joey "Raging Bull" Timpano. Instead of crashing the net Timpano veered left and deflected the pass into the top left corner past the startled Jets goaltender. It had to be one of the nicest goals this season for the Tigers. That ended the scoring in the 2nd with the Tigers holding a slim 3-2 lead.

The 3rd period was exciting with both teams having several chances. Conor Clark who had the back stopper assignment today was spectacular, blocking all the Jets shots until 3:45 when he Jets tied the score on a power play. That left for the last minute dramatics by Ray Cadeau. With the win the Tigers not only earned 2 points but also gained confidence and earned some respect. While the celebration will be short lived as the Tigers are right back at it Sunday night at least they can savour this victory and know that they can play with the best.

Derrick Johnson played an aggresive game both defensively as well as venturing into the Jets end a few times. The "High" light of the game was when Brendan Post showed some awesome elevation as he attempted to block a puck up in the rafters. Jace McGrath showed some gutsy play as he crashed into everything that moved despite still convalescing from his injury. All in all a strong effort by the whole team...let's keep it going Tigers!!!
