TIGERS WIN THEIR SEASON OPENER
The Streetsville Tigers scored a decisive victory in their season opener against the Mississauga Terriers 6-0. Connor Clark recorded the shutout with a steady performance including some spectacular stops when called upon. He received yeoman’s support from the defencemen who cleared the Terriers from in front of the net and prevented the 2nd and 3rd shots.
Penalties from the initial drop of the puck once again set the tone for the game early. It appears that teams are still adjusting to the game officials being more prudent in calling any attempts to impede the progress of players. Despite that the Tigers came ready to play and were prepared to kick off the season with a spirited effort. Their penalty killing was very effective and when they had the man advantage their power-play was not to be denied. Adam Galbraith was most effective playing shorthanded and also set an example for his teammates by taking on all comers when he went into the corners to retrieve the puck.
Goals were scored by Nick Wallace, Sean Corvetti, Dustin Hayward, Riley Skyba, David Johnston and Ryan Johnston.
Wallace showed his “soft hands” as he stride past the defenceman and deked the Terriers goaltender, slipping the puck past him. David Johnston’s goal left a lasting impression as the puck came around to the right point and with no defenders in close proximity he leaned into a high hard one that rang off the pipes before entering the net. The goalie’s ears are still ringing.
With a win under their belt the Tigers now look forward to a rematch with the Vaughan Panthers on Thursday who defeated them last weekend at the Brian Steele Memorial Tournament.
