The Streetsville Tigers are hosting their 39th Annual Hockey Tournament this weekend with games being played at Vic Johnson and Etobicoke Ice Sport. November 3, 2006...GAME 1 - TIGERS KICK UP A “STORM”
True to form the Tigers took game #1 early on Friday morning 5-3 over the Guelph Storm. The boys struggled mentally as each player would have much rather have been sitting in school, enhancing their scholastic endeavours while honing their interpersonal skills with their peers…YA RIGHT!!! Unfortunately while the Tigers were racking up their 1st win of the tournament, yours truly had to work so this game summary is short and sweet.
We won.
NOTE: Assistant coach Rob Canavan was taken off the injured reserved list. Last week Canavan noticing that the team was in desperate need of some much needed inspiration, hurled his head in the direction of an errant puck allowing it to glance off his forehead. With the boys now looking on Rob stared back as if to say “What!!!!....it’s just a flesh wound now get out their and win the game for me boys as he slumped onto the bench…okay it really didn’t happen that way but it would be a great scene in a movie don’t you think? I have often thought that I could produce a movie but…………..OOPS, did I type that out loud?
November 3, 2006...GAME 2 - COLTS NO MATCH FOR THE TIGERS
After taking the 1st game of the tournament earlier this morning the Tigers continued their winning ways in the evening tilt by defeating the visiting Barrie Colts 7-2. The team was lead by center Adam Galbraith who had a hat-trick and Riley Skyba with two of his own.
The Tigers were leading 2-0 after the 1st period with Galbraith and Skyba each notching their 1st goals of the night. Despite having the lead it was still difficult to figure out the potential of the Colts as they showed moments of greatness and would often take advantage of their size up front. Would they eventually wear down our Tigers? NOT!!!
The 2nd period saw the puck pass the goal line several times with Adam Galbraith scoring his 2nd of the game early to give the Tigers a 3-0. Then, with the Tigers continuing to apply pressure in the Colts end, Ryan Johnston got his name on the score sheet after receiving a nice pass from Adam Hiscock who spotted his teammate sitting at the Colts doorstep wide open for the Tigers 4th goal. Not to be denied however the Barrie Colts bounced back with a goal of their own with 2:19 left to close the gap to 4-1, finally figuring out the Tigers goaltender Connor Clark who up until that point had frustrated Colts scorers.
Galbraith would not be denied his hat-trick as he circled the Colts zone several times before receiving the puck and firing a shot that trickled past the Colts goaltender increasing the Tigers lead to 5-1. Skyba responded with a goal of his own to give him 2 for the game. Riley has put Jace McGrath at the top of his Christmas list as McGrath continues his effective play in the trenches, taking the express lane (6 items or less) any opportunity he can find and coming out with the puck on a consistent basis.
The final period saw the teams’ trade goals with Dustin Hayward scoring for the Tigers on the power play. Final score was 7-2 for our Tigers.
NOTE: Matt Raleigh continues to nurse an injury but we are all hoping that Santa will bring the Tigers an early Christmas present. In the mean time it’s great to see him working the bench and keeping the coaches on their toes.
