TIGERS CONTINUE THEIR MARCH TO THE FINAL PLAYOFF SPOT

The Streetsville Tigers are still alive after defeating the Mississauga Hornets 3-2 on Thursday night. Combined with the York Toros loss to the Humberview Huskies on Friday, the Tigers are now only 4 points behind with both teams having 2 games remaining in the regular season. 2 victories by the Tigers and 2 losses by the Toros will leave them tied for 8th. A one-game elimination match-up determining who continues into the playoffs.

In the return match with the Hornets on Thursday the Tigers Dustin “Ace” Hayward continued his torrid scoring pace (7 goals in 3 games) with the game opener. The Tigers were doing just enough to get the job done against the lowly Hornets, making it stressful for the supporters in the stands. To ease some of the tension Justin Iskra banged in the puck behind the Hornets goaltender with only 18 seconds left, making it 2-0 at the end of the 1st period.

The 2nd period saw the teams going back and forth, both struggling to find their rhythm. When seemed like both times had decided to play a little pond hockey Ryan Johnston fired up the after burners and stormed past the Hornets defenders to give himself a clear breakaway. With a couple of head shakes and shoulder shrugs the Hornets goaltender fell to the ice allowing Johnston to slide the puck past him and give the Tigers a 3-1 lead after 2 periods.

With a fresh sheet of ice thanks to the adept work of the zamboni driver, the Tigers prepared to finish off the Hornets but alas at 2:34 their foes scored to make the score 3-2. With elimination looming, the Tigers mounted a counter attack but the Hornets continued to press making for an exciting ending to the game with Tigers maintaining their lead and taking the 2 points for the win.

The Tigers now face the Mississauga Terriers Monday and Thursday night to finish off the season, needing wins in both games to give themselves a chance at a tie for 8th. The Toros face West Mall on Thursday and the Panthers on Friday.
