December 27, 2006...TIGERS TIE GAME 1 AGAINST THE STONEY CREEK WARRIORS IN A HEART STOPPING FINISH

After a short drive down the QEW the Tigers prepared for there match against the Stoney Creek Jr. Warriors. 1st Period The Tigers started off with some “tentative” aggression and exhibited a precision like breakout from their own zone on one of the 1st plays of the game. At the 7:00 minute mark, Mark Shiozaki was called for interference as his aggression got the better of him. During the power play goaltender Connor Clark made some huge saves from in close.

While the Tigers were starting to get their game stride the Warriors were the ones to score the 1st goal of the game with 2:49 remaining. The Warriors forward fired a hard wrist shot that Connor stopped but it bounced up in the air and dropped in behind him. Then about 1 minute later the Stoney Creek team scored their 2nd goal of the game as they broke out of their end on a 2 on 1 break. A hard shot to the short side finished the play giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead after 1 period.

In the 2nd period it only took the Tigers 2 minutes to make their presence known on a power play goal by Ryan Johnston. David Canavan made a spectacular rush from the Tigers zone. As he crossed the blueline he adeptly dropped the puck to the ever charging Johnston who made a quick move from backhand to forehand and tucked it under the goaltender.

The Tigers continued to gain momentum and pestered the Warrior goaltender who was up to the challenge. With aggressive play at both ends of the rink they started to dominate play but along with aggression comes risk and unfortunately for Nick Wallace he was called for “Hitting from Behind” as the Warrior defender turned at the last minute.

That didn’t deter the Tigers from continuing to press with Matt Raleigh having the best opportunity ringing it off the post as he fired a laser from the top of the circle.

The 3rd period saw the Tigers continue to press but as has been the case many times this season they were unable to finish. With just over 1 minute to play Coach Canavan and Emanuele decided to pull the goaltender in favour of the extra attacker. The Tigers charged the Warriors net and with 25 seconds left David Canavan scored the tieing goal. With that the Tigers felt relieved...Oh but wait! The Warriors gained the puck on the ensuing face-off and charged the Tigers zone.

They had 3 chances from point blank range but Connor Clark did his best imitation of a contortionist and blocked them all. The Tigers fans were sitting in an oxygen enriched area as everyone was holding their breath for those final seconds.

The buzzer marked the end of the game and the Tigers left feeling good about a well deserved tie.
