The Charlotte Fire Department is tasked with protecting the lives and property of the 700,000 people who live and work in Charlotte and the 1.6 million people in the metro proper. The city covers 243 square miles and is growing at a rate of five percent every year (approximately 25,000 people every year). Since 1990, the city has grown by 35 percent. The city's population is expected to exceed 1 million people by year 2010. Charlotte is the 20th largest city in the United States and 4th largest on the East Coast. The Fire Department protects the city with the following:

-1200 Firefighters  -38 Fire Stations   -39 Engine Companies
 
 
-2 Heavy Rescues -7 Battalions June 2, 1968
-5 Haz-Mat Companies - 7 ARFF Airport Companies
-5 Tankers -5 Brush Trucks
-3 USAR Companies -2 Dive Vehicles
-1 Decon Company


Last year the Fire Department responded to 85,000 emergency calls. This year, the Department is projected to run nearly 90,000 calls due to annexations and an increase in the population of the city.

The Charlotte Fire Department is commanded by Fire Chief Luther Fincher who is a 38-year department veteran.



Affectionately known as "The Rock", Fire Station 10 is located in West Charlotte, minutes from downtown. Located in the 3rd Battalion, the station is home to Engine 10, Rescue 10, Dive 10 and Battalion 3. Nine firefighters, two captains and one battalion chief are assigned to this station on each of the three shifts. The personnel assigned to Station 10 are members of the Charlotte Fire Department Special Operations Division. The personnel at this station are trained in numerous specialities including:

-Dive rescue
-Urban search and rescue (USAR)
-High angle rescue
-Swift water rescue
-Trench rescue
-Confined space rescue
-Helo-aquatic rescue
