INSTRUCTIONS

There is lots of information out there about how to make soy candles. We have tried several methods, buying all the equipment and finding this the easiest for use-
-
Melt soy wax in the microwave: Put wax flakes in 2 cup measuring cup microwave and turn it on for 1 minute at a time. (As you learn When wax begins to melt let sit in closed off microwave for 2 minuets and repeat as necessary until wax is completely melted. Do not over heat. -
-
-
Instructions: -
-
1. Fill a two cup microwave safe glass (Pyrex) with 2 cups of wax. Microwave until melted. (Each microwave melt differently but you will figure out rather quickly how long to leave your measuring cup in to get it melted.) Carefully remove the measuring cup from the microwave with a hot pad. MEASURING CUP WILL BE HOT. Stir the wax thoroughly. It might melt down so you will need to add more wax or pour some out to get to 15 ounces in the measuring cup. Make sure the wax is melted completely (clear looking and not milky) before proceeding. -
2. When you have 15 ounces of melted soy wax in your measuring cup, add 1 ounce of fragrance oil and your dye just before pouring. Stir completely so the fragrance and dye are absorbed into the wax. -
3.) Pour into jars and let set for 48 hours before burning. -
In talking with a wick manufacturer we were told that there are many sizes of wicks and you have to determine the correct one to use, based on the color and scent of your candle. (EX: a red candle burns hotter…higher flame…. than another color so you have to make sure you don’t use the same size you would in a softer colored candle.) We thought she was kidding but found this to be true.. -
-
You can easily tell of your wick is too small for your soy candle. Simply look at your melt pool after burning your soy candle for about 30 - 45 minutes. The melt pool should extend from edge to edge of your glass jar. If it does not, you will end up with some tunneling and unburned soy wax left on the edge of your glass container. Try a bigger wick or smaller jar. This is where practice comes in handy... those will vary with different types of soy wax. It is also a good idea to keep a journal of combinations you use and number your tester candles. That way when you find one of your creations that burns perfectly, you have ingredients and instructions on how to reproduce the perfect soy candle!! -

Remember not to overheat your wax in the microwave. Wax tends to shrink when it cools, and the hotter it is when you take it out of the microwave, the more it will shrink to reach room temperature-
-
"Why do I have these holes in the tops of my soy candles?" This is usually caused by the shrinkage of the wax. There are is really only one way to avoid this, and that is to pour your candle at a cooler temperature. If you cannot wait around for the wax to cool before you pour it, and get holes in the top of your soy wax candles-simply use a hair dryer or heat gun or fireplace starter and melt the top layer of soy wax. The holes fill in with the freshly melted wax. After that layer of wax sets up, you will have a new creamy looking top to your soy candle! -
-
candle tunneling. quickly as opposed to slowly due to a wick that is too small (see my wick is too small in tip #4). Again we will discuss the shrinkage of soy wax when it cools. This especially applied to soy container candles. Soy wax will stick pretty good to the sides of a glass jar, when in turn makes it pull away from the wick in the middle of the soy candle. If your wick burns quickly down, you probably have air bubbles in the soy candle that is surrounding the wick. This could easily be avoided by tip #2! -

INSTRUCTIONS IF USING THE MICROWAVE –

1. fill a two cup microwave safe glass (Pyrex) with 2 cups of wax. Microwave for approximately 5 minutes. Carefully remove the measuring cup from the microwave with a hot pad. MEASURING CUP WILL BE HOT. The measuring cup will be hot, so be careful. Stir the wax thoroughly. You may add more wax or pour some out to get to 15 ounces in the measuring cup. Make sure the wax is melted completely before proceeding.
2. When you have 15 ounces of melted soy wax in your measuring cup, add 1 ounce of fragrance oil just before pouring. . Stir completely (2 minutes) so the oil is absorbed into the wax and the wax is clear and not cloudy.
3. After filling the jar center the wick so when the wax cools, the wick will be in the center of the candle, and it will burn more evenly. After the candle cools, you may trim the wick.

Container melt point = 127° F
v Flashpoint = 450-500° F (This means the soy will flash a fire at this temperature. Never leave wax unattended) Wick container
1. Heat soy wax to 170 - 180° F (Will discolor if held at higher temperatures for long periods of time. )
2. Add color dye (When all the was is melted wait 30 seconds more t make sure there are no solid bits you can’t see. Give it a good stir, turn off the heat and pour.)
3. Remove from heat source
4. Add fragrance 7% by weight. at 140° - 150° F (7%= 1 lb of wax and 1.12 ounces of fragrance oil. The fragrance will bleed through the wax if the fragrance concentration is too high.) Another place says add fragrance 150° F /160° F. You don’t need to heat the fragrance oil before adding it to wax. Another place says add fragrance & dye and pour when the wax has cooled to 155° F -165° F. Since the soy wax has a larger molecular structure than paraffin, it is necessary to use more fragrances for a great scent throw. We recommend using 1.5 oz per lb of wax. 2 oz is ok if you want your candle even stronger. Add scent just before pouring. Stir in for 2 minutes! (Some fragrances may bleed if you use 2 oz., so it may be necessary to add 1 tsp of vybar to your wax, if you choose to use the extra fragrance. NEED CONFIRM!)
5. Pour into container at 95° - 110° F so you don’t get a rough top, but if you do get a rough top use the blow dryer. You should try pouring at 110* (or at 100* if using container blend). The wax will be very slushy and grainy at this low temp. (Votive wax can be poured at 125 – 135*)8) After you've poured your candle, cover it with a box. Letting your soy candle cool slowly is key to a nicely finished top. Be sure it is cooling in a space that's not too cold (like the garage or basement).
* CAUTION - Do not keep in liquid form above 150° F for extended periods of time, as this will burn the wax (give it a yellow appearance).
, set up a double boiler to melt your wax. Once your wax has completely melted, add any additives you have selected and mix thoroughly. Monitor your wax temperature carefully during this time.
v Wash and dry your jar completely. When it is dry put a couple of drops of superglue in the bottom of the wick-metal tab. Place the metal tab of the wick in the bottom of the jar. Hold til the wick is in place. (You time is valuable—pre-glued wicks may be better.) Wash and dry your container before starting this project. Be sure all equipment and materials are contamination free. Use pretabbed or If you like, add a dab of superglue to the bottom of the tab and secure it to the bottom of your container, as close to the center as possible. Make sure the glue is set before continuing.
Cover your work surface with newspaper or something else you don’t mind getting dirty. You might also want a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil to place the mold on when you pour the wax. This is a wonderful precaution to take in case your mold sealer doesn’t do the job. The wax will then pour out onto the tray where you can easily clean it up. Just allow it to harden, then peel off the tray and melt again.
· (This is also a good trick if you want to make wax chunks for a chunk candle. Just pour the wax into a tray of aluminum foil formed to whatever size you would like your chunks to be, then pour, cool and break or cut the wax into chunks.)
· Make sure you have everything you think you will need before you get started, because you never want to leave melting wax unattended, even for a few seconds. It can catch on fire very easily.
· Lay out towel and jars and hot pads.
· Water in boiler, thermometer holder
· Measure the wax chips into what looks like a coffee pot with cup and set a boiler pot. keep thermom with bent hook (page 20)_ 1800-U-bendIt
· Set on hot pad and prepare container with warning labels sticker which has caution label and burning instructions.
· Wick stickers attach to wick (Sticky on both sides)
· Wick in jar and measure out fragrances (small glass meas jar)
· Select color chip (candle dye) and put into pot of wax that is off fire and stir (shows 150)
· Pour slowly so glass doesn’t break
· Ribbon around jar
· Soy doesn’t burn as strong as some fragrances
· need to let it set for up to 2 weeks before burning.
· With soy only have to pour once but you do have to top it off like regular paraffin.
· Always include burn instructions/ warning labels with your candles to protect yourself. If you are packaging soy melts (what are they anxc what are tarts?)you may want to start with something easy and economical like cello bags. Either tie the top with a ribbon and hang a tag or put a label on the cello bag with burning instructions info.
http://www.lonestarcandlesupply.com/wax.html This contains instructions for the different type of waxes.

Safety Precautions:

1. Always have a fire extinguisher within reach. Review the instructions on the fire extinguisher to familiarize yourself with proper operation. Hopefully you will never need to use it, but if you do need it, you will not have time to read the instructions. For small wax fires, you may use something such as a pot lid to smother the fire. Never use water to extinguish a wax fire. Liquid wax behaves much the same way as oil, and therefore needs to be treated like an oil fire.

2. NEVER LEAVE MELTING WAX UNATTENDED. It may seem to take a long time to get the wax to go from solid to liquid. But once it has liquefied, the temperature will rise sharply. Make it a habit to constantly monitor the temperature of your wax. If that wax reaches the Flash Point, then the vapors produced are extremely flammable. The flash point of wax is typically above 300° F. Never let your wax exceed 250 degree F.

3. Always use a double boiler (described below). A double boiler helps distribute heat and prevents dangerous temperatures. Never melt wax directly on your stove.

4. Use an electric heat source if possible. If, by accident, your wax reaches the flash point, it is less likely for the vapors to find a flame and become ignited on an electric heat source. Any open flame, such as that found on a gas stove, will ignite wax vapors.

5. Always use a thermometer to monitor your wax temperatures. If you don't have a thermometer, put it on your list of things to get before you start making candles.

Double Boiler Description:

A double-boiler is created by boiling a pot of water on a heat source. The temperature of the water will never exceed 212 deg. F. We then place the pouring pot (containing the wax) within this boiling water. In essence, the pouring pot is never in direct contact with the heat source. The boiling water transmits the heat to the pouring pot quickly and evenly, without scorching the wax and minimizes the chances of a fire. Even with a double boiler, do not leave it unattended.
General Double Boiler Set Up:

1. Select an old pot that is large enough to place your pouring pot into.
2. Add an inch or two of water to the old pot.
3. Bring to a boil.
4. Place your pouring pot directly into this boiling water. You may wish to place a metal cookie cutter, or similarly shaped item in the bottom of your old pot to elevate the pouring pot.
5. Lower the heat to a simmer. It is not necessary to have a rapid boil. Simmering water and rapidly boiling water are the exact same temperature, 212° F.
6. Periodically add water to replace water lost to evaporation. Do not let the double boiler run dry. It can quickly get too hot.

Just By Nature™ Candle Supplies Handling and Melting of Container Soy Wax (NatureWax C-3)
Put the soy wax in a pan and slowly heat on medium fire until the soy wax is completely melted. Remove from heat. Add the fragrance oil and stir until all the fragrance oil is absorbed in the soy wax. Optionally you can add wax dye according to instructions on label. Pour the melted soy wax gentle in the jar and position the wick in the center. Use a clothespin or pencil to keep your wick in the center. When the wax has turned solid you can trim the wick to 1/2 inch.

Step One: Melting of Soy Wax – In crockpot, double boiler, microwave or hot plate- The wax should be heated to a temperature of 130o to 200o F to melt the wax. Approximately 175o F is recommended. Now is also the time to add any UV Light Inhibitors while the wax is melting. Do not heat the wax above 200o F. If Soy Wax is held at higher temperatures for long periods of time it will discolor and evaporate. Always use a thermometer when melting the wax and never leave your heated wax unattended. While the wax is melting stir the wax regularly to reduce localized heating of the oil. This will help to reduce burning of the wax while heating.
Step Two: Pre-Wick Your Containers – While the wax is melting, pre-wick your containers with the wick stickers and the appropriate size wicks.
Step Three: Adding Candle Scent and Dye after the wax is completely liquid. approximately 175o F, remove from heat and add your dye and then fragrance oil at 150. Make sure to stir the wax completely to ensure that the fragrances and dyes are completely mixed in. The recommended fragrance load for this soy wax is 6%, 1 ounce of fragrance per lb. of wax or less, although a 7 to 10% fragrance load may be added depending on the fragrance. We recommend that the wax be heated to 190F before adding dye. When using liquid dyes or no dye at all heat to 165F. This is for Ecosoya. Allow the wax to cool to your desired “pour temperature”. Add the fragrance and mix well?

Step Five: Pouring Candles - Make sure that the containers are at room temperature or slightly warmer (some say to preheat them in oven on lowest seting so wax adheres to the glass better) before pouring the wax into the container. The wax should be poured in the container while the wax is 155o to 165o F to reduce cracking and rough tops and some of the “frosting” on the outside.and speed up the cure time of the wax. The secret is to pour slowly and allow the heat of the wax to slowly transfer into the glass.

Step Six: Curing of Candles - The candle should be allowed to cool at room temperature approximately 70Fand cure for at least 24 to 48 hours for larger 2 lbs or greaterbefore the candle is burned. This will allow the crystals of the wax to completely form giving a nice finish to the candle. For soy wax, the longer the cure time, the better the scent throw. Another place says 4 days or you won’t get the full scent throw. Some even say 2 weeks. Container should remain open during cooling. The containers should be about ¼ to ½ inch apart to allow air circulation for even cooling.

NOTE: After the candles cool, sometimes you will notice a hole or crater around the wick. This is normal for an all-natural soy wax. Reheating the tops of the candles with a heat gun or a blow dryer will fix this. Caution – Do Not Overheat the Candles. Only liquefy the tops. (If yu prefer a 2 pour instead of a blow dryer- leave a bit of wax in the pan, if you can. After the candle has cooled for at least a couple of hours, remelt the extra wax and pour it carefully over the top of the candle. You want the wax to just cover the empty space.

Safety Instructions For Candle Making
Although not overly hazardous, candle making can be dangerous if you don't observe basic safety precautions. Failure to follow the safety rules may result in serious injury to yourself, your family, and / or damage to your home or shop. If basic safety precautions are taken, fire should not be a common problem, but you should be prepared anyway.
1. NEVER leave melting wax unattended. Not even in a double boiler.
v 2. NEVER overheat wax. Know the flash point of your wax (usually about 450 degrees F?. for soy). It will spontaneously combust when it reaches the flash point. If using wax of unknown flash point do not heat above 212 degrees F (such as in a double boiler). The fumes from overheated wax can cause severe illness - in case of an accident evacuate the area and ventilate it.
3. ALWAYS keep wax away from open flames - it is flammable.
4. ALWAYS use a thermometer. It is essential for both safety and good repeatable results that you always be aware of the wax temperature.
5. ALWAYS use a double boiler. Temperatures up to 200 degrees F. can be achieved this way. Most recipes use a temperature in this range. If you don't have a double boiler, use an old pot for the water and a smaller pot inside it to melt the wax in. A few recipes call for temperatures higher than 200 degrees F. and will require heating directly on the heat source. Extreme caution is required for this. Be vigilant, and do not allow the temperature to go above 325 degrees F. Do not let your attention wander. If possible do it outdoors on a hot plate.
6. NEVER put water on a wax fire.Wax is essentially oil, and water may splatter the flaming wax. DO NOT use water based fire extinguishers on wax fires, and for safety these should not be kept anywhere near your wax melting area.
7. ALWAYS keep a pot lid, and a dry chemical (ABC Type) fire extinguisher handy when heating wax. Use the pot lid to smother tiny fires in the melting container. A fire extinguisher is useful if you set the curtains on fire, or have some other major accident. These items should be kept outside of any area that may be affected by fire but still within easy access. A FIRE EXTINGUISHER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF CANDLE MAKING EQUIPMENT YOU CAN OWN.
8. ALWAYS use a pot holder or pliers when handling hot pots or cans.
9. Wear loose clothing. If you are wearing tight clothes and wax splashes you it will be in immediate skin contact. If wax gets on your skin, run it under cold water immediately - then peel off the wax.
10. Don't pour wax down the drain unless you want an expensive visit from your plumber.
11. NEVER let candle making get so routine that you get careless.
Following these safety rules and taking precautions against fire will help you relax and enjoy your candle making even more. THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF CANDLE MAKING EQUIPMENT YOU CAN OWN IS AN ABC TYPE, DRY CHEMICAL FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

Here are your FREE instructions for making container candles! 1. Prepare your glass container by threading the wick through the wick tab, and attaching it to the bottom of your jar with hot glue. If you are using botanical wax, you will need a larger wick size than you would with traditional candles. 2. Melt the wax over a double boiler. Never melt wax over direct heat! It gets too hot, too fast and will smoke and burn! You may melt botanical wax over direct heat or in the microwave until melted, but you can NEVER do it with paraffin! When the wax begins to melt, stir gently. 3. When the wax is completely melted, add a bit of the color powder from your choice of color potts until the desired shade is reached. 4. After you have added the color, you are ready to pour in the scent. Always use caution when pouring in oil! Wear eye protection in case of splashing! Use 1/2 oz of Brookstone Fragrance Concentrates per pound of paraffin wax. If you are using soy wax, double that amount. 5. Stir for at least 2 minutes to make sure the scent is mixed in well. If you are using Brookstone Superior Soft wax, Brookstone Tart and Votive Supreme, or Brookstone Botanical Soy wax it already containes all the additives needed so you don't have to add anything else to bind the scent. 6. Carefully pour your wax into the prepared container. Center the wick and wait for it to cool! When your wax is no longer warm, it is ready for use.

Please be careful of the hot surface when refreshing the oil in your lamp ring. -- fragrance oils can stain. Avoid spilling oil on lamp shades. -- For best results, do not use on bulbs over 70 watts.

    • i, Is it possible to use candle scents with a oil warmer? I tried putting some in a simmering pot and it got real strong and was smoking. Do I need to add something to it? Thank you

In an electric simmering pot You can use distilled water, then add 10 -20 drops of Scent It Fragrance Oil. Depending on the fragrance you might want more or less oil. You can also melt your old candles and add the fragrance oil as above. Just add Fragrance Oil as needed. Using old chopped up candles is nice (remove wick and any paper or metal) because it doesn't evaporate like the water.

      Rubber gloves
      1/2 Cup Plain Flower
      1/2 Cup Salt
      1/4-1/2 Teaspoon Scent.
      2/3 Cup Boiling water.
      Food coloring

      1. Mix dry ingredients well in a bowl.
      2. Add scent and boiling water to dry ingredients. Scent will be strong, but will fade slightly when stones are dry.
      3. For colored stones, blend in food coloring a drop at a time until desired shade is reached.
      4. Blend well, form balls into different sizes and shapes to resemble stones.

Recycle old potpourri. Make potpourri balls or wreaths.Don't throw away that old potpourri! Give it a new heavenly scented life. A beautiful way to decorate your home, office, or give as unique gifts.

      Potpourri Balls, or Wreaths
      • Potpourri
      • Craft Glue or hot glue gun
      • Styrofoam Balls or Wreaths
      • Scenting Oil

Make sure you have enough potpourri to cover your project completely.
Separate your potpourri by size, also put any dried flowers aside.
Doing a small area at a time, coat the Styrofoam with glue, and also the small bits of potpourri when gluing them on.
Continue gluing in layers this way until the largest pieces are on top.
If you are making a wreath, you may want to cluster the flowers and largest pieces, or use them for edging.
      Decorate with ribbon.
Add your scent by putting several drops here and there all around your project. The more scent you use the stronger the aroma will be. You may want more scent on a Wreath that will hang on your wall, than a Potpourri Ball that is to go into a drawer for scenting your clothes.
You may add any scent you wish, and keep refreshing it every few weeks for a very long lasting fragrance.
When using the Potpourri Balls in closets, drawers, etc. You can use our Sandalwood, Cedar, or Patchouli Scent to deter Moths and Silverfish.

      • Can you give me some help on aroma beads? What are they? How can I use them?

We at Scent It have been asked by several of our customers if we can tell them how to make Aroma Beads. The answer is yes, and they are very simple to make. There may be some out there who are not familiar with Aroma Beads or their uses, so before the recipe we will give you some information on them, and their uses. Aroma beads are little clear plastic beads that can absorb as much as 30% of their weight in your favorite fragrance oil. They are used as air fresheners, in Kitty Litter Boxes, Vacuum Cleaner Bags, Closets, Drawers, Sachets, in Dry Potpourri, etc. They are great to give as gifts, or in scent gifts, such as Stuffed Animals, Aroma Pillows, etc. Their uses seem to be never-ending. Aroma Beads are especially good when used in Pillows, or Stuffed animals where you want some scent, but not over powering. Any air freshener needs heat or air circulation to throw well, so when using Aroma Beads in Pillows, Stuffed Animals, Sachets, etc., you will have a softer, more subtle scent than you would when using the same Aroma Beads in your Vacuum Cleaner Bag, Air Vents in the house or car, or sitting in a sunny window. You may use any fragrance oil you choose, or mix your own for your own special blend. Color them with Liquid candle Dye, layer them in different colors, and fragrances if desired. Caution Please Remember, these Aroma Beads are not for Human or Animal Consumption! Do not use them in Tart warmers, Potpourri Burners, or Simmer Pots as the Beads may melt. Do Not lay scented Aroma beads, or Sachets on painted wood, wood, or plastic surfaces, as the Oil can cause damage. Directions: >Scenting oil of your choice >Liquid Candle Dye >Aroma Beads >Jar, or jars with tight fitting lid. If you want a pearl effect on clear beads, add White Mica Powder to them. This Recipe is based on 4 Tablespoons of Beads. You will have to adjust it to suit the amount of Aroma Beads you wish to make. Also remember, some Fragrances are much stronger than others, with Vanilla you will get a much more subtle scent, than you would if you were using Gardenia, etc. 1. Put fragrance oil in jar. 2. (To Color your Aroma Beads ) 2 drops of Liquid Candle Dye to 1 Tablespoon of Fragrance Oil and mix very well. 3. Add 4 Tablespoons of Beads to your colored fragrance oil. Stir beads with a stir stick until the beads are coated well and evenly. 5. Put a tight lid on the jar and shake, shake, shake. 6. Shake the jar every few hours, and shake everyday until the beads have absorbed all the liquid and feel dry to the touch. Remember, it may take longer for some fragrance oils to absorb. Some fragrance oils are thicker, some more liquid, and some just down right stubborn. It May take a day, or even a week for your Beads to completely soak up the Fragrance Oil. It may look like Bead Soup when you first mix everything together, but it will eventually all soak in. If you should run into a scenting oil that is not soaking in after a week, try adding more Beads and shake well, and let soak in. You will know when your Beads are ready, they will feel dry to the touch and will not bleed or seep.

Can I use Scent It Scents with my Potpourri?

Potpourri will naturally lose its scent over time. Try this:

        1) Use about 5 drops of oil for a hand full of Potpourri. Using an eye-dropper RESERVED ONLY FOR USE WITH SCENTING OILS is the best way to distribute the oil. If you don’t have a dropper, pour a little oil into the cap of its bottle and gently shake the oil onto the potpourri.

        2) If you keep your potpourri in a bowl or a basket, and you don’t mind that some oil may get on the vessel itself, keep it in that container to refresh it. Otherwise, place your potpourri in a roomy plastic bag.

        3) Sprinkle or evenly drop the desired amount of oil onto the potpourri and toss it with your hands. Pretend you’re tossing a salad with your hands. Very gently moisten every flower and herb as you disperse the oil. WASH YOUR HANDS WELL AFTER EACH USE. You may wish to use rubber gloves when using the oils, since some of our oils are spicy and may irritate sensitive skin.

        4) If you’re leaving the potpourri open in a ceramic bowl or basket, you can replace the blend back into its container right away. If you use the potpourri in a cloth bag or sachet or in a light-colored basket, wait a couple of days to return it to the sachet, since the oils may discolor or stain the fabric.
