some essential oils are extremely toxic to humans in very small amounts
Essential oils are referred to as "top notes", "middle notes" or "base notes" depending on their aromatic qualities.
Top note oils are the lightest, most stimulating and energizing oils. They have a fresh, immediately apparent quality that is intense, but fleeting, due to their fast evaporation rate.

Examples of top note oils are:
 Basil
 Bergamot
 Eucalyptus
 Lemon
 Lemongrass
 Orange
 Peppermint
 Pine

Middle note oils usually form the bulk of fragrance blends. They are strong, lasting and potent - not as bright as the top notes, or solid as the base notes. Their scent emerges shortly after the top note's first impression.

Examples of middle note oils are:
Chamomile
Fennel
Geranium
Juniper
 Lavender
Nutmeg
 Rosemary
Tea Tree
Base note oils are the slowest to evaporate. Their rich, heavy scents emerge slowly and linger. They form the base of the fragrance and give it staying power.

Examples of base note oils are:
Cedarwood
Clove
 Jasmine
Patchouli
Rose
Sandalwood
Vetiver

Top 10 Valentine Candle Scents
Love is in the air...and so should the scents of your custom made soaps and candles! Here are my Top 10 Valentine's Day Candle and Soap Fragrance Oils. They're not in any particular order...just my 10 current favorites - each is so very different.
Note: The descriptions below are from the vendor's site - with my comments added in.

INSPIRATION II - Fragrance Oil -Frankincense, cedarwood, sandalwood, rose w/pine & orange heavy, but great combination. Sweet and alluring. www.tayloredconcepts.com (1 oz is $2.00)

4) Blackberry Sage - Fragrance Oil- Rich blackberries blended with an earthy green sage scent. One of the first fragrance oils I ever used in soap - and still one of my favorites. Manufacturer's Site www.tradewinds.mainsecure.net

6) Perfumes from Ancient Times - Fragrance Oil A Captivating Spicy Amber-Oriental Floral, It starts with top notes of rosewood, coriander, orange blossom, pimento and fruits blending with heart notes of rose, jasmine, tuberose, carnation, lily of the valley, carnation and heliotrope grounded with base notes of vanilla, amber, cedar wood, benzoin and musk. I wasn't sure about this one at first...but it's a lovely candle fragrance to have burning in the background - wonderful for a sophisticated, sultry, romantic ambiance! www.wildwaysstudio.com

7) Amber Romance - Fragrance Oil The Amber from Tony's Fragrance Oils is the best I've ever tried. This variation of it is wonderful. Amber has a complex and haunting scent. Vanilla has long been recognized as a "comfort scent". Partnering with the amber and vanilla notes are light musk undertones that anchor the fragrance, while rounding it out. All the exotic mystery of an amber, with the lilting, stirring notes of romantic vanilla. www.tonysfragranceoils.com

8) Very Sexy - Fragrance Oil Both men and women find this fragrance "sexy". A Victoria's Secret "dupe", it has a spicy citrus blend of light Bergamot & Jasmine, combined with exotic notes of Cedar Wood, Sandalwood & warm Musk. It has top notes of tangerine, pink lime and bergamot leaves. The main notes of the fragrance mix Limewood, Cinnamon Bark and Sage. Vetiver and Orange Flower comprise the dry-down or lingering after-scent. Really great in candles or soap. (Or how about a massage oil/bar??) www.tonysfragranceoils.com $4 per oz

9) Vetiver - Fragrance Oil (No longer available) O.k., it should be obvious by now that I lean towards more spicy, complex scents, rather than sweet or florals - and this is perfectly evident with Candlewic's "Vetiver."It's a wonderful, crisp musk fragrance with top notes of juniper berry and vetiver with notes of sandalwood, and the essence of blue wildflowers. A little floral, a little woodsy a little musky - all wonderful. www.candlewic.com

10) Autumn Lodge - Fragrance Oil O.k...this fragrance (A Yankee Candle dupe) probably won't appear on many Valentine's Day lists - but I love it. It's a nostalgic blend of country woods and spices, a warm cozy fireplace, and Grandpa's pipe. What better than a cozy fireplace in the country woods for a romantic encounter!?! (Grandpa's pipe is optional...) www.cierracandles.com

I sell my candles online at www.scentable.com and my most popular fragrances are apple, merlot, cucumber melon, strawberry, vanilla (go figure), lavendar, and lemongrass. A lot depends on the season too. Spring is usually pretty big on florals, while in summer the demand goes up for the fruits. Fall and winter brings a rush of cinnamon, apple cinnamon, peppermint, and some of the "food" fragrances.

If you have a favorite scent but can't find it anywhere send it to Bellaroma.com so the glass does not break, we can make them in any style jar we offer. There is a 6 candle minimum to have a fragrance duplicated.

The difference between Fragrance Oils and Essential Oils- Essential Oils are natural concentrated essences derived from plants, bark, roots, seeds, stems, flowers, leaves, fruits, etc. and are usually steamed distilled. Fragrance Oils normally are made up of a number of synthetic imitations of essential oils creating a fragrance that will smell like a flower, herb, plant or other fragrance.

Essential oils directly on the skin because these oils are highly concentrated oils and are too strong to use directly on the skin. Similar to medications they should not be over-used and never used directly on the skin. It is suggested that you wear rubber type gloves while mixing these oils. They should never be taken internally. Keep these oils out of reach of children and pets.

So are ours triple scented?? As for "triple scented" and the like, this stems from old candlemaking wisdom that suggests using approximately 1/3 - 1/2 ounce of fragrance per pound of your wax recipe. This is called your fragrance load. Those additives can serve as an oil binder, helping to lock in fragrance and color, depending on the oil content of the same. Thus, a "triple scented" candle is one that uses roughly 1 to 1.5 ounces of fragrance per pound of wax.
Depending on the wax blend, however, a candle may or may not be able to hold that much fragrance without leeching or burning improperly. Leeching occurs when the oils from the fragrance or coloring seep from the candle. It is more apparent in a tealight, because it has a greasy appearance inside the cup. It will also tend to soot more because of the excess oil that is burning. Candles that hold in too much of that fragrance just won't have the wonderful aroma you desire when it burns.

A true fragrance concentrate:
is "thicker" than water at room temperature. The only exception to this is the citrus based scents, which may appear thin at room temperature. If it is watery, it has probably been diluted and is a poor value for your money.
** will be sold in a glass bottle at best, and NEVER in a clear or "see-through" plastic bottle. Good quality scent will degrade when exposed to light for long periods of time. It's kind of like a fine wine. If it's sold in a cheap plastic jug, is it really fine wine? It's doubtful!
have the flash points listed, and will indicate whether or not the fragrance concentrate is safe for skin use. Some fragrance concentrates are suitable for use in making soaps, lotions, body butters etc.

Another thing to consider is the type of wax you are using. If you are buying from a professional candle making supply source like Brookstone Candle Supply, your wax will already have all the additives needed to bind the scent. If your scent won't mix in to the wax well, you may need an additive like Vybar(tm) to bind the scent. Some candle making suppliers sell basic paraffin without any additives and call it candle wax. It isn't formulated for candles, so you have to add other ingredients to make it suitable for making candles.
If you are making soy candles, you will need to add more scent than if you are making paraffin candles. Soy wax can take more fragrance concentrate before it becomes saturated, so you can use more to make your candle strong enough.
Now you know the secret to making the most fragrant candles possible, get the scents you need HERE!

Because Brookstone Fragrance Concentrates(tm) are so strong, it doesn't take much to make a very strongly scented candle! One ounce will fragrance 2 pounds of paraffin candle wax. (That's roughly 1 Tablespoon of oil per pound of wax.) And at these low prices, you can see how you can really save money! (WHAT ABOUT SOY??)

www.wellingtonfragrance.com   fragrance oils are the closest to "real smelling" scents that I have come across.

As far as strength of fragrance I would give them an above average grade here as well.

The only drawback is the handling charge if your order is under $100. To be honest, if they didn't have that charge, I'd probably buy a lot more from them!

I buy most of my f/o's from kycandlewaxsupply.com the throw in my finished product is wonderful. I live close enough to save money by driving to pick up most of my products, but occasionally I just want to try a new f/o and shipping cost is reasonable and shipping time is excellent. I also have ordered from Lone Star Candle Supply. They too have an excellent product and are reasonable on shipping cost.

If the candle says the word "fragrance," they are telling you (in compliance with the law) that the aroma is synthetic and not natural. Since candles are not required to have ingredient labels check out the name of the scent. If it's "Grandma's Kitchen" or "Apple Crisp" or any other name that isn't a simple plant (including fruits and herbs), it is most likely synthetic. "Warm Vanilla Sugar" just doesn't occur naturally - it has to be concocted with chemicals.
In most cases, the only natural scents available are essential oils. These are actually made directly from plants, whether from the flower, the fruit, the leaves, the bark, the seeds, or any other part of the plant. If you search the Guides for "Aromatherapy" or "Essential Oils" you will find many good guides that talk about uses and quality.

High quality essential oils often do not create allergic reactions in people who have fragrance allergies. This is nice because those of us with fragrance allergies still like things that smell good! So the label should definitely say "essential oils." Even so, do ask if ALL of the scent is made with essential oils, or if it is a blend of fragrance oils and essential oils.

For instance, if you have fragrance allergies, you may do just fine with an all-natural wax candle scented only with essential oils - no matter whether or not the candle is colored using synthetics dyes.

If you are a purist, learn to love natural white or cream candles! Avoid any candle that has color and you will quickly weed through most of the candles you see, without even reading the label.

Purity When an essential oil says "pure" on the label, it is simply telling you it does not contain particles of dust and other kinds of contaminants. It does not tell you about the quality of the essential oil, just whether or not it is contaminated.

But that isn't enough, especially if you want essential oils that are therapeutic (in other words, they do more than just smell great). only some high quality oils are high enough quality to be therapeutic).

So if you are frustrated as to why essential oils and aromatherapy don't seem to help you feel better, if you just want instructions and not the reasons why, skip down to the bottom of this guide...

Bigger businesses can buy raw materials in larger quantities for better prices). Again, burn times vary by candlemaker. The goal is usually 15 hours for candlemakers who use chemical additives. All-natural soy candles that are made without artificial chemical additives usually have lower burn times. Scenting with essential oils (as opposed to artificial fragrance oils) will make candles cost more. How much more depends on which essential oils are used.

For example, clove oil is both very strong in terms of scent (not as much is needed) and one of the cheapest essential oils, so it wouldn't make much difference in price. Subtler fragrances will require more oil to be used. Most floral essential oils are incredibly expensive. Soy wax with artificial fragrance oils is a good compromise for the environmentally conscious customer who loves sweet, delicate, flowery scents.

A cold candle should have a good scent throw (a normal nose should be able to smell it about an arm's length away). Compare the cold throw of your new fragrance to ones you've previously tried. This is the way most people select their candles, and on the whole should be a fair indicator of the relative strength of the fragrance when it burns.

When you smell the candle, can you taste it? Fragrance that lingers will usually leave an aftertaste in your mouth. If you're comparing several scents, sniff back and forth several times using deep inhalations. Try not to get light headed, and after a while, one fragrance should become more prominent. Your brain is processing out the weaker fragrance, and all you'll be able to smell is the stronger one. (This works for food scents as well as other non-food fragrances.)
According to a national survey, scent is number one and color is one of the least important reasons for buying a candle.

Scented oil is fine if you want a light scent, but for the strongest scent throw, you need a FRAGRANCE CONCENTRATE. How is a fragrance concentrate different? (See Brookstone- a full service candle making company. In addition to our fantastic premade candles, we offer a full line of candle making supplies. If you are looking for the best items at the best prices, our company has just what you need! The fragrance concentrates we carry are simply the best you can get. They are super concentrated, made for candle making and come in MANY fantasic fragrances. Because you use less to get strongly scented candles, it's a better value! You won't be disappointed! Our fragrance concentrates are made with pride in AMERICA!

You can use our oils in soy wax, soaps, lotions, potpourri dishsoap, shampoo, cleansers, etc. ? Most of them are skin safe. If you are going to be using them in products that will be used on the skin, just ask and we will let you know if they are safe. Soy and natural wax candles are great for many reasons, but do not assume they are all natural. Most of them are not.

This guide is for people who for many reasons want to make sure they get an all natural candle. People with fragrance allergies often do fine with natural scents.

You can find candles with just about every fragrance imaginable, from blueberry to ocean mist to hot apple pie.

Couple Sells Candles That Smell Like Jesus
Product Flying Off Shelves
POSTED: 4:17 pm EST March 15, 2005
A South Dakota couple makes and markets candles they say smell like Jesus.
Slideshow: New Candles Allegedly Smell Like Jesus http://www.nbc10.com/slideshow/news/4287736/detail.html?qs=1;s=1;dm=ss;p=news;w=320
Now there's a candle that lets you experience the scent of Jesus, and they've been selling out by the case.

"We see it as a ministry, " says Bob Tosterud, who together with his wife came up with the idea for the candle.

Light up the candle called "His Essence" and its makers say you'll experience the fragrance of Christ.

Bob Tosterud and wife Karen say the formula is all spelled out in Psalm 45.

"It's a Messianic Psalm referring to when Christ returns and his garments will have the scent of myrrh, aloe and cassia," says Karen Tosterud.

Wondering what that must smell like, Karen Tosterud ordered those oils, a combination that produces sort of a flowery, cinnamon aroma. Then she called on a friend who just happened to be a candle-maker.

"And in October, we got our first batch of 768 candles. We had no idea how it would go," Karen Tosterud says. But once word got out they went through 10,000 candles. "It's the only one on the market and everyone tells us it's very unique and nothing like it," says Karen Tosterud.

"We wanted people to be able to experience Christ in new ways and to be able to read a bible and have that scent and that candle as a reminder that he is with us all the time."

"You can't see him and you can't touch him," says Bob Tosterud. "This is a situation where you may be able to sense him by smelling. And it provides a really new dimension to one's experience with Jesus."

The candles never stay on the shelves for long. The Tosteruds say each one that goes out is like a ministry in itself.

The candles sell for about $18. They are sold in about 150 stores around the country. Or you can order them online at www.hisessence.com.

You can also call this phone number: 877-psalm-45.

Essential oils dont get a good scent throws because essential oil is falling to the bottom. Use an additive called polysorbate 80 so the oil will blend in. EOs evaporate out of wax and leave you with "wax" scented wax.
Mix EO's with a matching FO with pretty good results. THe EO enhances the FO fragrance and seems to hold on better. Some scents are actually better in the FO version such as Sandalwood .

Using your own mix of fragrances is the secret to make your own special scented soy candles.

Used in our Victorie Joy Candle. http://www.forabundleofmyrrh.com/Ingredients_Glossary/Ingredients_Glossary.htm An aromatic gum resin obtained from several trees and shrubs of the genus Commiphora of India, Arabia, and eastern Africa, used in perfume and incense. Also called balm of Gilead. See sweet cicely. [Middle English mirre, from Old English myrrha, from Latin, from Greek murrha, of Semitic origin. See mrr in Semitic Roots.]

Main Entry: myrrh noun : a yellowish to reddish brown aromatic bitter gum resin that is obtained from various trees (genus Commiphora) especially of East Africa and Arabia (as C. myrrha or C. abyssinica) and has been used in the manufacture of dentifrices and as a carminative and a stimulating tonic compare BDELLIUM

myrrh

n 1: aromatic resin used in perfume and incense [syn: gum myrrh, sweet cicely] 2: aromatic resin burned as incense and used in perfume [syn: gum myrrh]

myrrh Heb. mor. (1.) First mentioned as a principal ingredient in the holy anointing oil (Ex. 30:23). It formed part of the gifts brought by the wise men from the east, who came to worship the infant Jesus (Matt. 2:11). It was used in embalming (John 19:39), also as a perfume (Esther 2:12; Ps. 45:8; Prov. 7:17).

It was a custom of the Jews to give those who were condemned to death by crucifixion "wine mingled with myrrh" to produce insensibility. This drugged wine was probably partaken of by the two malefactors, but when the Roman soldiers pressed it upon Jesus "he received it not" (Mark 15:23). (See GALL.)

This was the gum or viscid white liquid which flows from a tree resembling the acacia, found in Africa and Arabia, the Balsamodendron myrrha of botanists. The "bundle of myrrh" in Cant. 1:13 is rather a "bag" of myrrh or a scent-bag.

(2.) Another word _lot_ is also translated "myrrh" (Gen. 37:25; 43:11; R.V., marg., "or ladanum"). What was meant by this word is uncertain. It has been thought to be the chestnut, mastich, stacte, balsam, turpentine, pistachio nut, or the lotus.

It is probably correctly rendered by the Latin word ladanum, the Arabic ladan, an aromatic juice of a shrub called the Cistus or rock rose, which has the same qualities, though in a slight degree, of opium, whence a decoction of opium is called laudanum. This plant was indigenous to Syria and Arabia.

(2.) Hebrew pl. _ketzi'oth_ (Ps. 45:8). Mentioned in connection with myrrh and aloes as being used to scent garments. It was probably prepared from the peeled bark, as the Hebrew word suggests, of some kind of cinnamon.

Just as important as a new coat of paint increating a change in a room's atmosphere, certain fragrances can help induce a sense of contentment.

Alan Hirsch, M.D., neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, is a neurologist and psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of smell and taste loss. He claims that by arranging scent into our decorating system, we can in fact awaken certain emotional reactions.

"What this means is that you can strategically place specific scents in different rooms of the home or in your office to impact your mood and the mood of those around you," said Dr. Hirsch, "Aromas can impact the emotional experience more than anything else because there is a direct link between the nose and the brain. The brain reacts more quickly to smell than any other sense."

Noting that Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors, Dr. Hirsch believes that the home's ambiance can definitely affect an individual's mood. "If you're going to spend all that time inside, why not create an environment that can actually be beneficial to your well-being?"

Colonial Candle (www.ColonialCandle.com), a candle and home fragrance brand, has created a line of scents that, according to Dr. Hirsch, can affect one's frame of mind.

The candles and other home fragrance products come in a variety of aromas that are designed to affect mood in a different way. The scented candles come in a glass jar that have a removable lid and range in price from $8.50 to $20.00. Fragrances come with names such as vanilla + cashmere, Lavender, Fresh Picked Cotton, Harbor Mist, Cucumber Melon and Lemongrass.

In addition to candles, Colonial Candle has made it possible to experience the various scents by utilizing liquid potpourri and portable air fresheners as it is not always convenient to light a candle.

Each
Lemongrass, created to stimulate the senses and encourage wakefulness in the morning, has an invigorating citrus scent. Dr. Hirsch found that "[l]emongrass stimulates the trigeminal nerve, which causes you to wake-up the very same way smelling salts help you wake up."

Colonial Candle recommends that a Lemongrass candle can be lighted in the bathroom each morning before work to help awaken you for the day ahead. A Lemongrass candle can also be used when working late produces heavy-eyed drowsiness.

While vanilla + cashmere is designed to encourage sleep, Fresh Picked Cotton promotes feelings of safety and Harbor Mist increases the pace of learning.

can create your own complex scent blends that will make your soaps and candles smell wonderful with a scent that is uniquely yours. Grab your notebook and let's get started.

Difficulty: Easy Time Required: A few minutes to a couple of days Here's How:
1. Choose a combination of essential oils. (You can also try this with simple fragrance oils.) You can choose based on having at least one top note, middle note, and base note, or just choose several oils that you think will go well together. This is all about experimentation.
2. Open the oils and the small glass jar. You may be able to get a preview of your scent blend merely by having the three bottles open at the same time.
3. One at a time, dip the tip of a clean cotton swab into the fragrance or essential oil. Squeeze any excess oil from the swab on the lip of the bottle.
4. Place the swab in the glass jar.
5. Repeat for each of the essential oils you want to add to the blend.
6. Make sure to write down each essential oil you include in the blend.
7. Walk away from the jar and wait a few minutes.
8. Come back to the jar and gently sniff the air above the jar. This will be the scent blend in its early stage of development. Take notes on your thoughts about it. Is one oil overpowering the others? Do two of them seem too similar to tell apart?
9. Put the lid on the jar and leave it in a cool, dark place. After a few hours, open the jar and smell the blend again. The scent should have mixed further and "matured" a bit. Take further notes on your thoughts about the blend.
10. Put the lid back on the jar and leave it again in a cool, dark place. After about 48 hours, open the jar and smell it again. The scent blend should be fully mixed and "matured" by now. Take further notes about the blend.
11. Make corrections to your blend. Perhaps try two parts of oil A and one part of oil B. Or add some oil D to your blend of A, B, and C. Try the blend again until you find the perfect combination.
12. Last, but not least, try the blend in a candle or soap, and take notes on how it works in them.
Tips:
13. Try to get equal amounts of fragrance or essential oil on each cotton swab, and make sure your they are completely clean - or else you'll risk contaminating your essential oils.
14. Instead of cotton swabs, you can use an eye dropper or disposable pipette and a paper towel, but you must use a fresh dropper or pipette for each essential oil.
15. Don't stick your nose into the jar to smell the blend. Let the scent rise from out of the jar.
16. Sniffing coffee beans or ground coffee will cleanse your scent receptors. (Yes, just like cleansing your palate.) Sniff some coffee beans in between tests and you'll get a more accurate reading on the scents.
17. Experiment, experiment, experiment! Don't be afraid to try odd combinations, or combinations that don't adhere to the top-middle-base note ideal. Above all, be sure to take good notes!
What You Need:
o An assortment of essential or fragrance oils
o A small jar with an airtight lid
o At least one clean cotton swab for each scent oil in the blend
o A notebook to record your results

While Lavender can be used undiluted,  use of lavender  should only be done on rare occurances as severe sensitivity still could occur in some individuals.

Essential Oil Safety Information
Diluting a very small quantity of essential oil in carrier oil.
Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids that can be harmful if not used carefully. Implementing aromatherapy into your lifestyle shouldn't cause paranoia or undue worry. By treating essential oils as medicines and following the steps outlined below, you will be well on your way to safely enjoying the many benefits that aromatherapy can offer.
These safety guidelines are not a complete safety reference for the proper use of essential oils. When in doubt, consult your physician and/or a qualified and trained aromatherapy practitioner.

Essential oils should never be used undiluted on the skin. There are instances when experienced aromatherapy users and practitioners make exceptions to this precaution, but only once significant essential oil knowledge is gained should you ever attempt to apply an undiluted oil on the skin. Lavender and tea tree are listed by a large number of aromatherapy sources as being oils that can be used undiluted. Undiluted use of lavender and tea tree, however, should only be done on rare occurances as severe sensitivity still could occur in some individuals. Again, the safest rule of thumb is to never use any essential oil undiluted.

Some oils can cause sensitization or allergic reactions in some individuals. When using a new oil for the first time, do a skin patch on a small area of skin. Place a small amount of the diluted essential oil (never use essential oils undiluted on the skin) on the inside of your elbow and apply a bandage. Wait 24 hours to see if there is any form of reaction. Even if a particular essential oil is not known to cause irritation, this step should not be ignored. Even if an oil does not irritate you, it still can irritate someone else. It is important that you always keep that in mind.

Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy or by those with asthma, epilepsy, or with other health conditions.
Less IS More. When using essential oils, use the smallest amount of essential oils that will get the job done. If one drop will get the job done, for example, don't use two drops.
Not all essential oils are suitable for use in aromatherapy. Wormood, pennyroyal, onion, camphor, horseradish, wintergreen, rue, bitter almond and sassafras are some of the essential oils that should only be used by qualified aromatherapy practitioners, if ever at all.
Never let children use essential oils without the presence of an adult knowledgeable about their use. Most essential oils smell wonderful and many essential oils such as citrus oils can smell like they are safe to drink. Keep your essential oils away from children. Treat the oils like medicines that are poison in unknowing hands.
Essential oils should not be taken internally. Essential oils should only be taken internally after receiving a detailed consultation and prescription from a trained and qualified aromatherapy practitioner.
Essential oils are flammable. Please keep them out of the way of fire hazards.

Educate yourself, knowledge is power. Smell a real orange, better yet squeeze one and watch the essential oil fly out of the peel, rub it on your hand, feel the oilyness of it, smell it again and then again in 1 hour, now go smell that chemical version of it. You be the judge. Here's a little trick I use to tell if my essential oils are 100% pure, place a drop on a sheet of paper, when it dries it will not leave a residue, if it does it has been adulterated or "cut" with a carrier oil and is not 100% pure. Go ahead try it with that $300 an ounce perfume you have on your dresser. Most expensive perfumes are loaded with alcohol as a filler and petroleum distilates as fragrance enhancers.

There are only 2 essential oils you can use directly on the skin, Lavender & Tea Tree the others must be diluted to be used directly on the skin without reaction. (the orange test above will not hurt you)

Aromatherapy and a guide to essential oils. Scent is one of our most powerful senses....just think how a smell can remind us of a loved one, or take us to a different place or time. But did you know that scent can also have the power to heal - not just our emotional but also our physical well being.

Aromatherapy a practice that has been around for thousands of years. The basic definition is: healing ones emotional or physical well being through the use of plant oils - or 'essential oils'. There are many different essential oils and all have unique properties to help heal. There are numerous guides and books om the subject and I would recommend some basic reading to anyone who is new to the practice. Books on aromatherapy

An essential oil - Essential Oil - is a very concentrated substance that is derived from distilling plant pieces - sometimes the petals, others may be from the stem or the root. Most often clear, the oils are pure and potent, a little goes a very long way! An essential oil is exactly what is says it is - the essential part of the plant from which is is derived....it does not contain any additional substance, scent or preservative....which brings us to an important point - there are many items on the market which contain the word 'essential oil' or aromatherapy...however they may contain many other things in addition to that oil - for example - the term perfume oil does not refer to an essential oil despite wording that might otherwise lead you to believe that you are purchasing a true essential oil!

You need to look for two things - one the label should have the essential oil listed and thats all , second the price; essential oils are rich and as I have said a little goes a long way, They are most often sold in 15oz or 30oz sizes and can be quite pricey which is an indication that you are buying the real thing, they also can vary widely in price and you do not want to buy from someone who lists every oil they have for the same price, lavender is one of the cheapest ( for example I can purchase 30oz locally for $8) but Frankincense is more than twoce that....if in doubt, buy from a reputable place such as an organic store. Sometimes these oils may be diluted in a carrier oil such as 'sweet almond oil ' in such cases these are true aromatherapy products but have been prediluted so they can be used directly on the skin - the bottles may be bigger and the cost a little less but it will not go as far!

You also want to buy oil in a dark container - they are typically sold in small brown glass bottles. Light can damage the properties of an essential oil so you would not want to purchase oil in clear glass and certainly not plastic which can react with and ruin the oil.

There are many ways these oils can be used. Essential oils are powerful and must be diluted prior to direct use on skin. They can also be fatal if ingested so please learn their use prior to using.

You can use for massage and to do this you could add a few drops of your favorite oil to an unscented lotion. Many companies that sell essential oils also sell such products so you can make your own personal lotions. You can also add to a carrier oil - carrier oil - almond these are usually cheap to buy and worth getting if you are to pursue an interest in aromatherapy.

Certain essential oils may be added to a bath - lavender is great for this purpose - very relaxing and smells wonderful.

You may use an oil burner to scent a room. There are many different examples on the market. One of the cheapest and most simple is a lamp ring, this is a little metal ring that you add to the top of a lightbulb then fill with a little of your favorite oil. The heat from the lamp will help the scent fill the room. You can also use oil burners where oil is added to water in a bowl then placed over a nightlight. Essential Oil burner

Another great product is a car essential oil diffuser - this is something you place in a lighter socket then add essential oils to a little pad that is inserted into the diffuser. Peppermint is a great choice - this will keep you alert while on the road.

Certain oils may also be inhaled - a wonderful example of this would be eucalytpus - add a few drops to a bowl of steaming hot water and inhale during times you have a cold. This has antiviral properties that can help you feel a lot better!

The list of uses is endless - but be familiar with your oils before using, as essential oils should be treated with caution - basically treat like they are medicine - find out their uses and side effects before use.

What can Essential Oils Heal? The list again is endless, but know that both the emotional and physical health can benefit from aromatherapy. Everything from stress, anxiety and mental fatigue to bruises, acne and insect bites may be alliviated by the use of essential oils.

Guide to essential oils and how they can help:
Here is a list of just some of the oils on the market, together with their properties, their uses and links to purchase them though eBay:
· Lavender - one of the most well known and widely available. Has a lovely floral scent and is widely used for its sedative properties...a few drops in a bath or on your pillow can help promote sleep. But this oil is also analgesic and anti - inflamatory - try using when dilted on insect bites, bruises, scrapes and wounds, may also be used to help soothe sunburn and is wondeful when massaged on the temples to help ward off a headache - Lavender

· Tea tree - often seen on the shelves in acne products - this has a very strong almost medicinal smell - not one to scent the room but due to its antibiotic, antifungal, antisceptic properties, this is great on cuts, wounds, acne , dandruff, athletes foot, burns. tea tree

· Peppermint - again strongly scented with antisceptic, astringent and digestive aiding properties, this is wonderful when added to a bowl of steaming water to soothe feet after a long day - also great for indigestion and nausea among other uses , can upset sensitive skin- Peppermint

· Lemongrass - has a sweet citrus scent that is simply fantastic. this has among other properties - an antidepressant quality and may be used against stress and tiredness. Also can help those who have lost their appetite. I like to mix this with lavender in a burner as it just smells so great and really uplifts your mood. lemongrass oil
· Pine oil - not so widely available - but wow, is this one good to burn over the holidays - makes that fake tree seem almost real. its woody scent is not the only thing about this oil which is a great decongestant so try mixing a drop or two in your steaming bowl of water along with your eucalyptus to have relieve those cold symptoms. pine
· Rose oil - so floral and fragarent - love to scent the room with this and with its many wonderful properties - antibacterial, sedative, antidepressant - this can help against stress, insomnia and is great for dry skin. rose oil
· Ylang Ylang - wondefully sweet and floral - this is easy to find - smells great in a burner and is most often found in romantic lotions / potions due to its aphrodisiac properties - also a good antidepressant and sedative, can help relieve stress and promote sleep. Ylang ylang
· Myrrh -this one is going to cost you more - but its warm spicy scent is worth it! Again a wonderful way to scent the room, the antisceptic propertoes make it good for a sore throat and mouth problems. Another oil that is also good for cold suffers it can help promote a healthy immune system. myrrh

The most scent I put in the C-3 is 9% and that really pushing it but I can only do 7% with anything with a cinnamon base to it. I make several different kinds of Cinnamon candles or candles with cinnamon in them and they all have to be at 7%. They are very strong in the C-3. The cinnamon candles at 7% are really strong in the C-3 Cargill. I can use up to 9% and I have used 10% with vanillas and succeeded. Try Cinnamon bun at 9% but mix well as it is pretty thick so stir extra long. But if you can do Vanilla at 10%, you shouldn't have much of a problem. Just be sure to test before selling.
