- Inspiring one another spiritually, emotionally and morally;
- Developing open and on-going communication between themselves and the community around them;
- Bringing one another to a deeper awareness of God's love and a sense of their own discipleship;
- Incorporating the values, teaching and traditions of African-American heritage into our prayer and worship

Our Church

Saint Martin de Porres is a Catholic church in North Philadelphia that has served families for over 100 years.  Part of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the church is over 90% African-American.  Saint Martin de Porres encourages all races, faiths, and backgrounds to attend and non-Catholics are welcomed as well!

Our Parish

Created in 1993 by consolidating the parishes of Saint Columbia, Saint Elizabeth, and Most Precious Blood, Saint Martin de Porres Parish is a church with a mission.  Of the nearly 26,000 households in the parish, 40% of all the residents live below the poverty level with 45% earning less than $15,000 annually.  Because of the recent history of parishes leaving the region, many felt consolidation was a sign that the Archdiocese was diminishing its presence among the poor. In fact, the opposite was true.

 At the time of consolidation, the Archdiocese made a strong commitment to the parish.  There was a major investment of capital and renovation, so that a strong and safe church, for Catholic and non-Catholics of the neighborhood alike, might represent the Church’s commitment to the people of North Central Philadelphia.  This is the flagship Catholic parish of the area, a sign that the Church was indeed not going away, and would not allow its commitment to dwindle or erode.
