Chapter 1
Remember the faces of past lovers they have a tendency to come back and haunt you.
As he stared down at the prone body on the ground a slight pain tugged at his heart that made him both confused and afraid. He was an immortal, well in age any way, and he shouldn't feel any compulsion to help this creature that his kind had, on occasion, feasted on or sacrificed for the moon goddess Luna. Shifting from his animistic form to that of a twenty-five year old man he stared down at the human who was blissfully out cold unaware that she was being watched by a creature of legend.
Sighing he stared down at the frail broken body that lay crumbled at his feet. She wasn?t much to look at with dark brown hair that was cut strangely and yet oddly familiar. The main part of it went to the bottom of her ears but her bangs were long and went past her shoulders. He bent and touched her hair. It even felt even more familiar as the silk strands ran through his fingers. Frowning an unbidden memory flashed in front of his eyes, it was of a faceless girl laying beneath him his hands wrapped in her hair. Her slender body sensually bare beneath his. She had the same odd hair and pale skin as the broken woman who lay in a puddle of blood at his feet. Shivering he blinked the image away and looked back at the girl. She was thin but not sickly with small breasts that barely rose and fell as she breathed. Her lower body was covered in a pair of Tripps that had Neon orange straps and threading, her top was covered in a silk tank top that showed the hoop and moon ring that dangled from her belly button. She looked like she was about twenty four maybe younger than that she had a look of innocence around her a child like innocence.
Slowly he bent and sniffed her sent hoping it would trigger a memory that would tell him what her name was or maybe even show her more of that gorgeous body of hers. His head was instantly intoxicated by the sickly sweet sent of candy, a perfume called ?Haiku?, and the sent of her femaleness. The sent made his mind imagine things that made his pants tighten, as his groin grew hard with lust. Not a single image flashed through his mind that was any help and yet he realized the perfume as the stuff one of his pack mates wore. Tilting his head at her in a dog like manner he frowned. He hated mysteries and this woman was defiantly a mystery and yet he felt so familiar with her that he felt his heart ache.
He suddenly caught the sent of fresh blood, it quickly reminded him that she was hurt. Sighing he lifted his head and looked at the moon for some comfort and an idea what to do but her milky surface seemed to just mock him. He knew that the instant Tara saw that he was bring another female human home she would throw a fit that would probably put him in the hospital again, but he had to help the woman he didn?t know why ,but with an undying certainty he knew he had to help her. He was drawn to this woman in a way that made it imposable to ignore her. Sighing and looking at the moon with a silent prayer he gently lifted the small body in to his arms hoping that Tara would understand for she too had brought home a man who she had found in an accident, the man still hung around the house form time to time. Also maybe Josh would know her since he had known Josh before he was changed maybe he too would be drawn towards this woman like a moth too the moonlight. That thought brought another feeling in to existence that both confused him and annoyed him. It was jealousy of the fact that another man would look at her in the same way he did.
Shivering as some of her bare skin touched his he slowly made his way towards his home the small wood cabin nestled in the trees away from prying eyes. His mind slipped away form him again as he thought of his past. It was painful and he tried to forget it but it always seemed to bite him in the ass once he thought it was gone. He had been a kid passed from one fateful bullshit thing to the next. His parents weren?t the best but they gave him a place to stay and a roof over his head. He loved his dad but his mom was a drunk and had so many lovers it wasn?t even funny. He had a younger sister who he swore would one day become just like his mom. When he was younger nothing was really all that bad nothing that would scar him for life any way but once he met her every thing changed. She was a beauty form a dream that he thought loved him. She took care of him and even let him have sex with her what more could a guy ask for. Till one day she told him he had to give up his parents if he wanted to stay with her. With out even a second thought he chose her for she was beautiful and he was in love with her. That was a woman he thought he knew a woman named Kat.
She suddenly changed drastically once he had asked her to marry him. She was no longer his kind lover but a demanding bitch that tried to ruin his life. He stayed with her hoping beyond all hope that the girl he fell in love with would come back. Thing just kept getting worse and worst when finally they broke up but he still didn?t leave her because he was living there and had no where else to go. After a while he left there and got his own apartment but she had scared him for life. He still loved her no matter what.
He suddenly stopped and stared at the girl in his arms. He could almost remember her. Nothing really big but just a feeling that she had comforted him and he had comforted her in a time when they both needed someone but had no one. Staring at her limp form he had a sudden image of her hugging him gently holding him while he talked to her about everything that had bugged him.
He growled annoyed at the fact that he couldn?t remember. Why couldn?t he remember if she had been something good to him then why could he remember the one who had hurt him but not the one who saved him? Staring at her he suddenly smelt a presence near him that he recognized.
?What do you want Josh?? He asked his voice cold as he lifted his head to look at the other man who approached him form the trees. He was a broad man not fat just big he was nearly six foot six and had huge shoulders. His hair was a dark dyed black color and his eyes were blue.
Josh stared at him studying him before he spoke. ?That blood is never going to be able to come out of your shirt you know,? He grinned his voice lazy yet laced with a sharp blade of arrogance. ?And you do realize that Tara is going to be pissed once she --- he glanced at the girl then froze---- Holy shit dude do you realize who that is?? He asked looking at the girl with wide eyes. He realized now that the girls face had been pressed against his chest but when he had turned to look at Josh her face had moved. The moonlight shining on her pale skin making it seem to glow like that of a unicorns.
He was annoyed that the younger man realized who she was and he didn?t. Glaring at Josh he shrugged. ? Not off the top of my head no,? He said his voice uncaring but his emotions were a different story. Grateful that Josh was a different breed than him and didn?t know how to read emotions other wise the younger man would have felt the hope, fear, and jealousy that ripped through his veins. ?Would you like to tell me?? He asked looking at him annoyed.
?That?s Laura,? Josh said looking confused as if he was at a loss as to how he could not remember the small frail creature in his arms. ?You know the girl we used to call Bitches or in your case Demon I still don?t under stand that one,? He shrugged ,a superior smile on his lips, and walked closer inspecting the girl.
Suddenly wave after wave of images crashed down over his head. He remembered a time where they stayed up till twelve o?clock in the morning talking with her while her parents were away. He remembered also making slow love to her for her first time and then taking care of her after wards. He remembered her shock at that and smiled as he recalled what he told her ; ?It?s my job to take care of you I owe you this?. He remembered holding her as she nearly wept because he was leaving, and most of all he remembered telling her that he loved her.
?Oh my God,? He whispered gently cradling the girl in his arms then he pulled her tight against his chest and took in her sent his face buried in her hair. He smelt the younger man's confusion and righted himself pushing away the emotion that threatened to take him over at any moment.
?You OK, Jacob?? The younger man whispered his voice showing his confusion as he stared at them. Jacob had never told anyone of the things that happened between the two of them all they knew was that they were friends and barley that since the last time they were around each other as a group that fought like children bantering each other but not playfully back then they had hated each other. That however was before the group of four fell apart and they went their separate ways.
?Yeah just a ghost from the past come to bite me in the ass,? He muttered and then sighed heavily. ?Lets get her inside and heal her OK,? He said and stared towards the cabin. It was just out of sight behind a clump of tall pine trees.
When they walked in to the room every thing seemed OK at first till Tara realized what Jacob held in his arms. ?Tara before you say anything FUCK YOU!? He growled glaring at the woman who was the leader of there pack. Josh hit Jacobs?s shoulder looking shocked but Jacob just ignored him and went to the couch putting her down before he glared at Tara again. ?I don?t want to hear it this girl means a lot to me so shut the fuck up and leave or help me heal her.? His eyes were sharp as they bore in to the woman?s soul like fire burning her. He then turned and went over to Laura and started pulling her clothes off forcing him self not to react to her naked state. She had a tattoo on her hip that was a double cross bow. he smiled remembering when she got that nearly seven years ago. Sliding his fingers over it gently he sighed and looked at her wounds. Her whole body looked like one big bruise but he had to start on her leg before she lost too much blood and died. Slowly he moved down and looked at her leg and sighed the bone was sticking way out of the skin he would have to put her to sleep before he fix it or she would wake up too soon. Reaching up he put two fingers over her temples and wove a sleeping spell over her brain.
?It?s very arrogant of you to want to speak against me,? She said softly her eyes flaring angrily. Josh winced but Jacob just continued what he was doing before moving down and shoving the bone back in place moving it around with magic then healing it his face covered in sweat. She growled and glared at him her eyes wide with anger.she walked over shoving Josh out of the way before digging her nails and Jacob's back. He looked at her then went back to work on Laura trying to heal the bump on her forehead. She looked startled for a moment not under standing why he would change all of the sudden. He usually was manipulative and easy to push around but now he was well...more willful. she looked at the girl then turned and stormed from the room.
Josh laughed and shook his head."You're playing with fire dude..I suggest you leave some bruises because she'll expect them,"He said shrugging. Jacob looked at him and sighed knowing he was right he looked at her then grabbed a afghan off a near by hair arm and put it over her gently before picking her clothes up.
"We better get rid of these other wise she'll see the blood and wounder sadly I couldn't get rid of the scar. I hope she doesn't notice it,"he said looking at the girl who sat on the couch her face completely relaxed and at ease. He smiled and walked from the room.

Prologue
Never swerve to avoid animals it just causes more damage.

The bright orbs of the creature caught in my headlights burned wide and bright in the dense fog. The rest of the creature was cloaked in the not quite air not quite water mixture making me unable to see what it was; truly all I needed to know was that it was there. Suddenly my hands tightened on the steering wheel and I jerked the black and silver Firebird off the road swerving to miss the creature who’s bright eyes had looked at me so helplessly through the nice thick fog that made driving dangerous.
The car hit the curb of the road and instantly flipped on to its back like a turtle. It spun around, it’s tires spinning against the air in a vain attempt to gain purchase again, after colliding with a few rocks that littered the side of the road it flipped back on it’s wheels but now it was too late the car was beyond the point of being able to drive. For those few moments all I could hear was the groaning of metal, glass breaking, my screams, and my heart the last of them was so loud that it almost drowned out the rest. My head smashed against the steering wheel making stars appear before my eyes and my vision to blur with painful tears. When the car finally stopped moving it was so silent so very still I wanted to scream again and panic but I knew it wouldn’t do any good so I assessed the damage. My stomach tumbled and I tried to keep all my dinner down but I couldn’t do it and tilted my face away from me and was sick all over the wonderful leather seats that I had just gotten installed a few days before. I never had been very good on the spinney rides at carnivals and this was ten times worse than even that. The air bag exploded in my face nearly suffocating me and yet at the same time making me laugh at the irony of the fact that it was over and it had just now deployed. I wished it had before because of the dull throb on my forehead where my head had smashed in to the steering wheel.
Shivering I sat still letting my mind calm before I tenderly lifted my arms and moved the fingers. The right hurt but not enough to be broken the left was just aching. I slowly moved each finger not only to make sure that I didn’t break any but because I was afraid to check out the pain that nearly blinded me. It came from my right leg and I was afraid that it was broken, no I take that back I knew it was broken. Slowly I moved my left leg then every toe slowly very slowly before looking at the other leg. I instantly regretted it, you know when you were a kid and you would get hurt but you wouldn’t cry till you saw the blood. Same concept here, only this still hurt just not as bad as when I saw what was wrong.
All the air in my lungs left me in a whoosh of air as I screamed in pain. The leg was defiantly broken. Blinded by pain I lifted my head and looked at the wound again trying to keep calm so I could see if I would be able to do anything but sit here. Blood already soaked my black and neon orange Tripps but I couldn’t tell how deep the wound was. Soon I saw something else that made me hurl again. ‘So much for Granny Annie’s pie,’ I thought bitterly as all the food I had eaten at my Granny’s house was expelled from my stomach. The reason behind all of this was because of the bone that stuck at least six inches out of my right thigh.
Holding back tears I looked at the door of my car. It was for the most part bashed in but ,by the looks of it, it was still in working order. Slowly very slowly I grabbed the handle and pulled on it. At first I was put out when the door didn’t swing open then I noticed that it was locked and quickly pulled the lock up and pushed the door open. Trembling I put my left leg out first then used it as leverage to push my body out of the car.
I hit the ground with a thud and nearly screamed in pain again but I just bit my lip hard and winced as I felt it split open. It was the worst thing I’ve ever felt in my life. It couldn’t be real it was too scary to think it was real but it hurt too much for it not to be. Lifting my self up on to my elbows I started dragging my self towards the road. I knew that it was late at night but I prayed someone would happen to drive by just maybe he or she could save my life.
As I pulled my self on to the Side of the road I saw a pair of glowing golden eyes looking at me through the fog. With a jolt I realized that the only way some one would see me was if I was in the center of the road and by the time they did I would be under their tires. Trembling I let the tears I had been holding back fall down my face like a waterfall. I was going to die here and I knew that now. Shaking I sobbed then I started feeling light headed. I was loosing too much blood slowly I closed my eyes letting my self black out thinking if I was out cold it would be less painful when I died. While I dropped in to oblivion the two golden orbs drew closer as if inspecting me for it’s next meal.
