The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School of Philadelphia, Inc. (MCSCS) was established as an outgrowth of Parents United for Better Schools (PUBS). PUBS is a non-profit, multi-racial parental advocacy corporation. PUBS established a tutoring program for grades first through twelfth for private and public school students. PUBS also sponsors adult basic skills and computer training classes. Veronica Joyner, M.Ed. is the Founder and Chief Administrative Officer of The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School of Philadelphia, Inc. MCSCS was founded in 1999 and is one of the largest charter schools in the state of Pennsylvania with a population of nearly 1,000 students in grades first through twelfth. The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School is ranked as one of Philadelphia’s top ten schools. This ranking includes all Charter and Philadelphia Public Schools in Philadelphia.

Mission

The mission of The Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School of Philadelphia, Inc. (MCSCS) is to provide a quality education to students and to graduate students prepared to enter college, vocational training and today’s work force. We offer an advanced curriculum for first through twelfth grade, in a class size of 20 students with a highly qualified team of certified teachers. There is also support personnel and strong parental support. We provide a quality learning experience for our students in a safe, clean environment. Students are given the tools and skills to demonstrate mastery in mathematics, reading, and writing well above grade level. Students are also given skills to enhance their critical thinking, problem solving, social and creative thinking. Character education and self-esteem are a part of our curriculum which gives students the ability to have confidence, pride, make moral decisions and foster a positive attitude when dealing with any negative situation. A part of MCSCS’s curriculum is parental involvement, with teachers and staff working in partnership with each other.

Class size not to exceed 20 students with teacher assistance in grades 1-4 Tutoring center in School for those that are having academic problems, Free Tutoring is available to all students on Mon.-Fri. after school Establishing classroom rules Organizing small groups Tapping into emotional and moral intelligence Curriculums are tailored to include moral and civic values Students are given an opportunities to pursue a career goal by hands- on training in the fields of medical, law, computers and accounting. Providing music lessons such as Keyboard, Piano, Violin, Choir and much more Facilitating student-to-student and student-to-teacher interactions Setting a climate where students understand that to learn is to make mistakes and to learn to use them in order to experience success.


Transportation- because many students are absent from school because they do not have transportation. Free transportation will be provided for elementary students as amended by Charter School Law. Middle and high school students who qualify will receive Free tokens.
