My Virtual Photo Album

Welcome to my online photo album!

The photo's on this page are from when I worked as a Tribal Preservation Representative from 1993 to 1994. The major of the photos were taken of areas relative to the Traditional Lands of the Western Shoshone Indians of Nevada.

Rock art presents an historical story of an event or an occassion that took place while the tribe was present at that location.

Sometimes rock art can express a religious occurance or an event that is significant to the tribe.

Preserving the Past

Places such as rock caves were not just for animal habitat use. Sometimes tribes would use these sites for burials or as was the most often case, for shelter, to keep out of the weather and as well, on occasion would use rock shelters for food caches, places to store winter food.

Historic Camp Sites and Possible Sacred Locations

Lands throughout America, such as the area above, where streams, brooks or rivers ran, were camp sites. Some cam sites were large, used in a seasonal manner and depending on the location, size would vary. For example, winter sites often were in wooded areas, while summer camp sites were used along river banks and close to food and hunting areas.

There are many sites throughout the United States, once the Traditional Lands of the Sovereign Nations, where there are traditional food gathering areas and sites where sacred ceremonies were held.

Understanding Why?

Hunting, fishing, food gathering, camping, burial and ceremonial activity was never just accomplished in just one major area. The Indian was a seasonal mover, utilizing large tracts of land in various locations.

History would declare that the Indian while confined to reservations had limited access to lands, but that isn't the story and today where modern progress has evolved there are townships, cities, ranches, farms and corporations built upon lands once utilized by the tribes long before the immigrants arrived on the shores of Indian country and many of these lands throughout these United States have sincere and very serious Sacred relationship to the Ancient as well as to future history of the Tribes.
