AYER by Stephen Priest

CONTENTS

A.J. Ayer (1910-1989) held the Wykenham Chair of Logic and Metaphysics in the University of Oxford. He visited the Vienna Circle in the 1930's and made massively influential the thesis that theology and metaphysics are meaningless, arguing that any genuine problem may in principle be solved by science or by logic. Arguably, modern anglophone philosophy is still consciously or unconsciously under the spell of his 'Logical Positivism'. Stephen Priest helpfully explains Ayer's philosophy, providing definitions of difficult concepts.
