The Repressive Hypothesis
The theory of sexual repression was first clarified and systematized by Sigmund Freud.
The basic idea is that all people have basic drive toward sexual satiation. When the sexual imperative is left unfulfilled and/or is prohibited by society, the people put an end to the open search for sexual gratification by becoming unaware of their sexual desires.
When people forget ther sexual desires and render them unconscious their sexual energy is channeled into other areas of life (productive work, for example).
