Naruto Ova - The Lost Story

Kakashi-sensei takes Squad Seven on what should be an ordinary C-level mission: escorting Suien, the young leader of the Village Hidden in the Waterfall, home to assume his duties. But Kakashi gets called home to attend an important meeting, leaving Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura to complete the job. As soon has he leaves, a group of rogue ninjas attack the Village: They want the Hero's Water, which can raise the chakra of anyone who drinks it tenfold or more. With Sakura captured, Naruto and Sasuke have to work together to defeat the renegades. To no one's surprise, they come through, especially after Naruto talks Suien into abandoning his cowardly ways. Also known as Mission: Protect the Waterfall Village and Battle at Hidden Falls. I am the Hero!, this 40-minute OVA (2004) plays like an extended episode of the popular broadcast series--which is just what fans of hyperactive knucklehead Naruto want and expect.

Naruto-Movie-Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow

The first feature based on the popular adventure-comedy Naruto, Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow takes knuckle-headed ninja-in-training Naruto Uzumaki to an unexpected place: a film set. With Sakura, Sasuke, and Kakashi-sensei, he must protect Yukie Fujikaze, the temperamental star of a series of period melodramas. Yukie is rude to her fans (including Naruto), throws tantrums, gets drunk, and mistreats her co-workers. But she doesn't seem to be in any danger until the director decides to shoot her new film in the Land of Snow. In the frozen north, the ninja bodyguards discover Yukie is really Koyuki Kazehana, the long-lost princess of an icebound realm that's been usurped by her evil uncle Doto. Naruto and his friends use exotic jutsu (and plain brute strength) to defeat Doto's minions. The Naruto TV series takes place in a timeless Neverland, and the regular characters feel out of place in a modern setting, making jokes about movie-making. But the film plays like an extended episode of the show, with Naruto's boy-scout-from-the-wrong-side-of-the-tracks determination and perseverance winning the day--as his fans expect.

Transformers/During the 1980s, one cartoon series ruled the airwaves... The Transformers. This paragon of consumerism was created with a dual purpose--to entertain and to galvanize children to buy the toys. Somewhere along the line, the show became a cult favorite, so in 1986 they fashioned an epic tale of good versus evil specifically for the big screen. The result looked vaguely like an animated remake of Star Wars. Who are the Transformers? The good guys are the Autobots: Optimus Prime, SoundWave, Jazz, Ultra Magnus, and many more. Their mortal enemies are the evil Decepticons, led by Megatron and StarScream. The Autobots must save their home planet from an evil entity known as Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles). At the same time, they must defend themselves from an all-out attack from the Decepticons. Along the way, lives are lost, battles are fought, and a new Autobot leader is born as another dies. The story and action never stop in a thrilling ride that often makes you forget that you're watching an '80s cartoon with inferior graphics. The violence will also come as a mild shock to those who haven't seen this film for a while--definitely a movie for the 8 and over audience. For those who grew up on this series, this is a movie that must be watched. Unlike cartoon serials before and after, The Transformers relied on solid stories and interesting characters, a manifesto the film itself upholds with gusto and grace while also being morally responsible. Don't underestimate this movie; there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. --Jeremy Storey

Spirited Away

Princess Mononoke

In a remote mountain village, Ashitaka (Billy Crudup), the last young warrior of a once-great clan, undertakes a journey to find a cure for a life-threatening curse laid upon him by a dying forest-god. Along the way, he becomes involved in the bitter fight between the Tatara clan, led by the proud Lady Eboshi (Minnie Driver), and another human tribe, with a race of forest-gods in the middle. Ashitaka meets San, the Princess Mononoke (Claire Danes), a young woman raised by wolves, who is prepared to die to defeat the humans. The Princess draws young Ashitaka into the struggle between man and nature, forcing him to try to find a way that will halt the endless circle of killing and create a middle ground where forest creatures and humans can live together in peace.
