South Dakota

While I can't say all good things about living in South Dakota, I do enjoy being here more than I really like to let on.  Population is low and nature abounds.  I can drive ten minutes out of Sioux Falls and be surrounded by nothing but earth and sky in every direction.  The sky is so open, clear, and blue.  You can watch the thunderheads build far in the distance, the shadows fall across the fields, feel the wind pick up as a storm rolls in.  It's not unusual to spot a red tail hawk sitting on a fencepost or circling above.  Pheasants are also a favorite of mine; the males have surprisingly beautiful coloration.  I love seeing the wildlife here, even if it does mean some close calls while driving every so often.

I certainly don't claim to be a photographer but I do enjoy taking some land and skyscapes when I have the time.  The photos come in handy when I need a reference for a painting with clouds or horizon lines.  It's also a great excuse to just get out and enjoy the weather (non-winter weather, that is...).
