Other Ceilidh and Celtic dances and music sessions

Waipapa (near Kerikeri), Bay of Islands, New Zealand in the Waipapa Hall: music begins at 7:00PM on the first Friday of every month.
Note that the Waipapa ceilidh used to be held on the last Friday of each month but has moved to the first Friday of the month since more than two years ago. Some dancers now begin gathering at the hall about 6:30 for a shared supper or socialising before the dance.

Kohukohu, North Hokianga, New Zealand in the Kohukohu Hall: annual, . . . The 2010 ceilidh was held on Saturday, May 1st, and was a smashing success. No ceilidh was held in 2011, and no community ceilidh was held in 2012. The 2013 Kohukohu ceilidh was held on Saturday, 22 June, and was a huge success enjoyed by more than a hundred dancers. Unfortunately, it appears likely that there will be no Kohukohu ceilidh in 2014 -- but watch this space for updates.

Rawene, South Hokianga, New Zealand in the Rawene Hall: people in the community have spoken of making this dance annual. The most recent Rawene ceilidh was held on a Saturday, a very warm summer's evening (the summer before this one just past), at the historic Rawene Town Hall and was a huge success enjoyed by about a hundred dancers. There will be a Rawene ceilidh in 2014. Curiously, the organizers have asked that we not publicize their event. They say they're afraid of having too many people for their hall to hold. [No, we've never heard of such a thing before either.]

Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand (held in Kamo): annual, on Saturday, 11 August in 2008 and in July 2009. No ceilidh in 2011; not sure about 2012 or 2013, but Whangarei area musicians are talking about maybe putting on a ceilidh later this year -- watch this space.

Okaihau, Bay of Islands, Far North, New Zealand: occasional dances in the Okaihau Hall. The Okaihau Lions put on a wonderfully successful ceilidh on Saturday, 13 April 2013. This year's Okaihau ceilidh (again put on by the Lions) occurred on the 22nd of March. Like last year's ceilidh, the 2014 Okaihau ceilidh was so well attended and so enthusiastically received that others are likely to follow.

Jam sessions in Auckland: excellent session at the Clare Inn, Dominion Road, Mt. Eden, on Monday nights. Good sessions on Tuesday evenings at Florrie McGreal's in Takapuna. Sessions at The Bog (renamed McCarthy's and subsequently closed) in Parnell on Sunday nights are no longer happening. Either that (Bog) session or the Kingsland jam session on Sunday afternoons may have been moved to Florrie McGreal's in Takapuna.

Sometimes held at St. Michaels's Church Hall in Kelburn (corner of Upland Road and St. Michael's Crescent). Starts at 7:30pm. Finishes 10:30 - 11:00pm; (all are 3rd Saturday night of the month)

According to Bill Barompta via Mike Savage there are Contra dances planned for Auckland on 8 November & Wellington on 21 November -- venues/locations as yet unspecified. There is also the possibility of one in Christchurch on December 6th, but no confirmation of that yet -- watch this space.
