From Auckland (or even Wellington), Warkworth, Wellsford, Whangarei, or Kawakawa, follow Highway 1 north toward (but not all the way to) Kaitaia and Cape Reinga. After you pass through Moerewa and climb up Turntable Hill, you will come to a junction with the beginning of Highway 10. [This junction is in the tiny community of Pakaraka, but you might not notice that. If you pass the Pakaraka Hall, you have gone too far.] Turn right (the only way you can turn) onto Highway 10 and proceed north. Pass the junctions for Paihia and Kerikeri, but do not turn. Shortly after you pass through the small village of Kaeo, the highway makes an abrupt left-hand turn over a one-lane bridge. Stay on the highway, cross the bridge, and continue north on Highway 10. [The bridge junction is well sign-posted.] A few minutes later, you will pass the Whangaroa Golf Club on your left--this means you're getting fairly close. After a few more curves and hills, you will cross a bridge, and soon you will see the shallow waters (or perhaps the mudflats) of the upper reaches of Doubtless Bay on your right.

At this point, slow down and prepare to turn right. You will see a painted right-turn pocket on the pavement and signs indicating the turn for Mangonui. Turn into this access road, which takes you into the lovely seaside village as it becomes Mangonui's main road. Go past the hotel on your left and the tiny supermarket on your right. Just a little further along, the Mangonui Hall is on your left, on the inland side of the road. If you reach the fish & chip shop ("World famous in New Zealand") built out over the Bay, you have gone a little too far---come back 50 or 75 metres.
