Social Studies Lesson
Grade 4
Objectives:
Students will read about an aspect of James Buchanan’s life.
Students will create a poster highlighting part of James Buchanan’s life and present this information to the class.

Materials:
Social Studies textbook
Large sheet of construction paper for each group
Crayons and markers
Procdure:
Introduction-
Discuss previous section of chapter in Social Studies textbook
Ask students what they know about the James Buchanan.
Complete “Know” and “Want to Know” sections of KWL on chart paper.
Developmental Activities-
Divide class into groups randomly by counting off.
Assign each group a different part of James Buchanan’s life to read about in their textbook.
Instruct groups to read their assigned section together and then work together to create a poster about this particular part of James Buchanan’s life. Remind students that their poster should contain facts as well as illustrations.
Give groups sufficient time to complete their posters.
Each group will teach the rest of the class about part of James Buchanan’s life using their poster.
Hang posters on the wall in chronological order.
Closure-
Complete “Learn” section of KWL chart.
