ILA Lesson Plan
Grade 4

Objectives:

  • Students will identify sentences as past, present, or future tense.
  • Students will write paragraphs in future tense and rewrite paragraphs in past tense.

    State Standards:
    Pennsylvania Academic Standards

  • 1.5.5 A,B,F Quality of Writing

    Materials:

  • Cards with words to make sentence
  • Sheet of paper for each student

    Procedure:
    Prior knowledge- Students will have read a story in their basal reader prior to the start of this lesson.

    Introduction-

  • Divide the class into groups.
  • Provide each group with a set of index cards, each containing one word.
  • Instruct students to work together to put the words in order to make a sentence.
  • Ask which group thinks they have a sentence written in the past tense.
  • Have group read the sentence aloud.
  • Ask which group thinks they have a sentence written in the present and future tense.
  • Have groups read sentences aloud.
  • Discuss past, present and future tense.

    Developmental Activities-

  • Provide each student with a sheet of paper
  • Prompt students to write a paragraph about the story that was previously read in class. These paragraphs should be written in the future tense.
  • After students have been given time to write paragraphs, ask for volunteers to read their stories aloud, concentrating on the future tense verbs.
  • Prompt students to switch papers with a partner.
  • Instruct students to rewrite their partner’s paragraph in the past tense.
  • Ask for volunteers to read the new stories aloud, concentrating on past tense verbs.

    Closure-

  • Students will individually complete workbook page dealing with past, present, and future tense verbs.

    Evaluation:

  • Teacher observation during group and individual activities
  • Student completion of paragraph and workbook page

    Adaptations:

  • Students who have trouble writing paragraphs in the future tense will be provided a paragraph written in the future tense with the verbs left out. They will be prompted to add future tense verbs to the paragraph.
  • Teacher will assist students who struggle with the concept throughout the lesson.
