Reading Lesson
Basic Skills- Grade 2 (group of three students)
Objective:
The students will brainstorm words containing specific word families and read a story containing these word families.
State Standards:
New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards
3.1.2 B- Phonological Awareness
3.1.2 C- Decoding and word recognition
3.1.2 D- Fluency
3.1.2 E. Reading Strategies
Materials:
Mini whiteboard and marker for each student
Copy of book “How the Game Was Won” for each student
Procedure:
Introduction-
Teacher will write the word “out” on the board. Teacher will initiate a discussion about the word family- e.g. What word would I have if I added the letter “r” in front of the word, out? What would happen if I took away the “r” and added the letters “sh”?
Each student will be given a whiteboard and asked to brainstorm words ending with another word family (each student will be assigned a different word family.)
Students will read their lists aloud.
Developmental Activities-
Teacher will show the students the book “How the Game Was Won.” Teacher and students will discuss the cover of the book and make predictions about the story.
Teacher will read the story once to the students as the students follow along using their copy of the book.
Students and teacher will read through the story a second time together concentrating on word family words and fluency.
Closure-
Each student will go through the story individually and write down words containing the word families discussed in the introduction.
Students will read their lists aloud.
Teacher will assist students in finding any word family words that they did not find on their own.
Evaluation:
Teacher observation during introduction and story reading.
Student participation during closure activity.
