  • 3.1.1 C- Decoding and word recognition
  • 3.1.1 F- Vocabulary and concept development
  • 3.4.1 A- Active listening

    Materials:

  • Sentence strips
  • Pocket chart

    Procedure:
    Introduction-

  • Place cards with spelling words written on them on the table in front of the students.
  • Ask students to pick out specific words and read the words aloud.
  • Repeat until all words have been read.
  • Choose one word, write the word in a sentence on a sentence strip, and place it in the pocket chart.
  • Read the sentence to the students, and have the students read the sentence back.
  • Cut the sentence apart and mix up the words on the table. Do not cut the end punctuation mark away from the last word of the sentence.
  • Ask the students which word will be at the beginning of the sentence. If the students cannot pick out the first word, guide them to understand that the word that begins with the capital letter should be the first word of the sentence. Place this word back in the pocket chart.
  • Next, ask the students which word will be the last word in the sentence. If they have trouble picking out the last word, guide them to understand that the word with the mark of punctuation comes at the end of the sentence. Place this word back in the pocket chart at the end of the line.
  • Next, help the students to sound out the remaining words and put them in order to complete the sentence.
  • Read the sentence aloud with the students.

    Developmental Activities-

  • Place the word cards face down on the table.
  • Have one student at a time randomly choose one word and read it aloud.

  • Repeat this process until each student has chosen a word and dictated a sentence.
  • Cut the student’s sentences apart mix up the words.
  • Give each student the sentence that they dictated and have them put the words back in the correct order. Help them to recognize which word comes first and last in the sentence and use beginning and ending sounds to figure out the remaining words.
