General Information and Purpose
We are the Norman Family Association, founded in 1978 by the desendents of the Norman family of western North
Carolina, USA.
Here at the Association we honor family blood ties to Thomas Norman Sr. and his proud descendents. We
meet annually to reconnect and share our family heritage of clanship, honor and intregity to the
communities that we live in and the personal friendships and business relationships that we foster.
As one of many Norman men and women who colonised the early American wilderness prior to the
establishment of the new American nation, Thomas Norman Sr. owned and settled land near and around
Buffalo Creek in Cleveland County, North Carolina in
1776.
As part of public record, this area was part of Tryon County by 1775, then became Lincoln County by the 1780s.
Historical documents have recorded that this land purchase by Thomas Norman Sr. was paid for with
English pounds.
History of Association
The plan to create this association was developed on or about July 15,1977. On that date a beloved and
honored member of the Norman family, Mr. Robert Marion Norman Sr. had died and the family felt the urgency to bond together as a formal group. During that meeting several family members, which included
Mrs. Minnie Cook Norman, Mrs. Muriel Norman Bradley, Mrs. Janois Norman Beam, Mrs. Ivey King Peeler, and Mrs. Maggie Norman Jefferies discussed (with Mr. Donald Beam present) and planned the first meeting of the Association for the following year of 1978. It was determined that the month of April would be the best time for the Associations annual meetings.
Meetings of the Norman Family Association have been
held in the same location for nearly 28 years in
Belwood, North Carolina, at the approximate location of a portion of an original Norman plantation.
Membership
Open to individuals who are Norman family related and/or have a pronounced interest in the genealogy of
the Norman family.
