I See the Light!!!

What are the two key elements in life in general? Water and fire? Air and nature? Plants and animals? It is none of those actually. The correct answer is light and darkness. These two things are the key elements to help everyone and everything life until the end of time. Both are inseparable. One cannot live without the other one. Life cannot survive without light and darkness. Light gives life to the planet, wakes everyone up, and warms up the world. Without, no one would survive. The darkness is just as important as the light. The darkness is there to cool everything down, put life to bed, and save up on energy. Light and darkness are like husband and wife in an important sense. Life cannot survive without it. Theatre is no exception to the rule. Without them, drama would not be as moving as it is known to be. The pictures on page 400 demonstrate the uses of both light and darkness in the world of theatre. Mimi Jordan Sherin used both elements strongly.

Light is all around the world. Some places have too much and some places have too little of it. Either, life cannot survive without light. Drama and art need light as well. The first scene on page 400 is heavy with light. There seems to be birds and fire all around. The bright oranges and yellows really draw me into the picture. The whole scene would look dark if not for the festive colors. The two women in the picture cannot seem to take their eyes away from the light either. Even the chandelier and table lamp do not compare to the setting’s light. The mood is just energetically charged. Bright colors tend to wake up people and fill them up with energy. One cannot fall asleep during this scene. The orange and yellow would take a copper pot and bang it loud over their head with a wooden spoon just to wake them back up again. The setting just commands attention from whoever is viewing it. One just cannot look away. Sherin has used the light very well in this scene.

The second scene on page 400 is quite the opposite. It is just dark. Purples and blues dominate the picture. The lights in the scene do not help at all. The darkness is overpowering. It would choke out any bright colors that try to intrude on the set. The darkness wants to stay in power! The purple and blue slows down everything and everyone that looks at it. The people in the picture seem lifeless and sleepy. The colors are singing the audience to sleep. The only thing missing would be some soft music to play as well to go with the scene. The darker and cooler colors tend to relax and sooth people. Sherin did a nice job with the dark colors.

Light and darkness are important to everyone and everything. Drama is no exception to the rule. Without them, theatre would be dull and lifeless. The two elements are just that important. Sherin uses both elements perfectly well. Light and darkness are the two strongest elements known to man.
