Red Red Rose
What do you associate a rose with? Love? If you answered, that you have guessed right. The rose is the oldest symbol of love known to man. Robert Burns followed this example well. Too well, in my opinion.
In his poem, Red Red Rose, Burns bleeds out love to his lady. It is sugary sweet to the core. The poem is too sappy! This is a diabetic’s worst nightmare! If a guy spoke like that to a modern a woman, she would probably roll her eyes at him and walk away. Burns sounds like he’s trying to hard to woo the woman he loves. The poem makes me want to throw up. Don’t get me wrong I love romantic things. But this is too sickeningly sweet for my taste!
