“On Monsieur’s Departure” and “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love”

On Monsieur’s Departure by Elizabeth I and The Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlow have one thing in common. They both speak about love. But they do so in different ways.

On Monsieur’s Departure by Elizabeth I speaks about love and hiding one’s true feelings. She loves this guy she muses about in the poem but can’t show her feelings to him, even if he leaves her. I assume because she is a queen and he is of lower class. I don’t know why but that theory fits this poem perfectly.

The Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlow, on the other hand, speaks of a young shepherd expressing his love to a beautiful young woman openly. He seems to be begging her to be his and promises her beds of roses, simple yet fine clothes, and other adornments.

I actually like both poems because I am a sucker for love and romance.
