Gay Marriage and Shakespeare

What exactly constitutes as marriage? Is it between a man and woman? What about between a same-sex couple? Prop eight did not see it that way in 2008. Many people think that the clause is bad one. This proves that the LGBT community does not really have any love at all from their fellow man. Professor David Orvis seems to think that is. He was our guest speaker tonight. His topic was about Queer Vows and the Telos of Early Modern Comedy. He said that marriage was basically a lie. Orvis opened a new door to Shakespeare and his plays to me.

Orvis made a change of plans tonight. His topic was originally going to be about Queer Vows and the Telos of Early Modern Tragedy. I did love the change however. It just lightened up the mood for me. The play of focus was Shakespeare’s As You Like it. Orvis claimed that Shakespeare’s plays were technically queer marriages on stage because women in Shakespeare’s day were not allowed to act. Young boys filled the roles of female parts. Shakespeare’s comedies as I have learned seem to play around with gender-bending and queer love. However, his tragedies down play those subjects.

One thing that annoyed me about the lecture was that Orvis read from a paper. I just wanted him to talk to us instead of reading. I had just been taught to professionally talk to the audience, not read to them. It just seemed kind of drink to me. However, Orvis did use the myth of Zeus and Ganymede to really drive his point home. I might have to use Ganymede for my own stories one day. Despite the paper reading, the lecture turned out rather decent.
